It's a stereotype spurred on by the historical potato famine. No, the Irish are not "obsessed" with potatoes.
redface I am. I'm notorious for even eating them raw with salt. They fill you up and taste good! No one else in my family likes potatoes as much as me though... redface

Potatoes are good, but you know that they originated in the Americas? The potatoe famine was mainly caused by most of the population of Ireland living on nothing but (or something like it) potatoes. And because the potatoes were bad, and the other foods weren't as popular and/or common, most people starved.
Not the best time for the Irish.

The fungus that affected the potatoes was not limited to Ireland, it ruined crops in British Isles and mainland Europe. Only in Ireland was it the only crop available to most people. Only in Ireland were people breaking the law if they tried to give other crops to starving people. The people of other countries, like France, just changed to other food.

Didn't it originate in England or something? Or am I just blaming everything on them now XD

Amen to that.

I'd rather have vodka though...

...leading us back to...

...the potato.

I'm actually a huge fan of the potato. I think potatoes are wonderful because they're so versatile. You don't have that with any other vegetable really. Also, they're delicious. Am I "obssessed" with them, I don't think so no, I just think they're delicious and fun to prepare. biggrin

My mum tries to give them to me everyday and I say I'm sick of them and then she reverts to, "When I was growing up.."

I do love my potatoes!! rofl AND during the famine the irish had poataoes because they were the easiest thing for the irish to grow because the soil over here isnt great but the potatoes would grow in it anyway unlike other crops!

Wasnt it Sir Walter Realigh (woops cant spell his name!!) that brough them over here? question

we are NOT obsessed,in fact some of are plain sick of them (eg. me!)
BUT,everyone thinks so because when our country was poor and had bad land etc, they weer easy to grow and good for energy, hence they became the staple diet.
therefore, the potato blight that caused the famine was a real pain in the arse

Yep.
I feel for those who lived at that time and had to deal with it. They were strong people, wherever they lived.

I'll also say that like a lot of people I'm not obsesed with potatoes, I just like them. They're healty and quite yummy.

i want to say that i believe the british made the irish give up the "good" potatoes to them and that caused a lot of families to lose everything.... including lives.
