Starlit DeityOfTheForest I've heard of a cromwell being the name of a clan/family of witches. I can't remember where though. If it is though that means that the Hellsing family had a bit of help when they make alucard their pet. A family of witches in a Disney movie, Halloweentown, had the last name Cromwell.
Doesn't necesarily mean the family had help. Coincidence is possible and Van Hellsing was supposed to be a master of the occult himself, a man we could expect to be able to bind as well as defeat Dracula.

Though I didn't see much of that movie. It would be strangely amusing if Hirano named it after them. Doubt that's the case, though.

That would be depressing, for the Cromwell system to be based off a Disney film. (Don't get me wrong, nothing against Disney, but naming a control system of the Master's off of a children's film, seems a bit off, me thinks)

Well then again Disney stories have been know to be based of some pretty sick and twisted things. The fact that it was found in a Disney movie could point to a much darker source. Then again perhaps it is just a random name...

Gorenza Then again perhaps it is just a random name... Knowing Hirano's occasional lapses in research, it could be just that. I hope it's more, though.

I'd always wondered about the 'Cromwell Approval' myself. Just never bothered looking it up. On doing some quick research... the description of Cromwell's ceremony to become 'Lord Protector' reminded me of a scene in the TV series. It was the description of the cloak and scepter etc... There do seem to be a few parallels, what with his army and so on. I'm betting there's a connection to the Order of the Golden Dawn somewhere. I just need to find it. XD Those guys are the ones who invented the 'hermetic' script, and was a very popular magical group about the time Alucard would have been 'sealed'. *goes out on a limb here* Perhaps... Cromwell let the GD members do what they liked, as long as they were under 'restrictions' - after all, even though it was a 'secret' society, there were a LOT of VERY high placed members. It wouldn't do to kill them all. So long as they didn't blaspheme in public, ne? Most of them were Good Christians as well. So, following that, Sir Hellsing may have had some twisted permission to 'keep' a vampire, provided he follow the restriction levels Approved by the Lord Protector Cromwell.... follow me? *does a new search* Hm... An interesting clip of a rant by Yeats, a review for 'Snakes and Ladders' and a reminder that the family name Cromwell is taken from Wales. Ooh, here it is. Search engine hilighted the part that was good. http://www.watch.pair.com/reformation.htmlHermetic Order of the Golden Dawn > Rosicrusian Order > Freemasonry (um, it's a big article. Lots of Protestant/Rosic. parallels, and just keep scrolling till you hit Cromwell, down with the Puritan section.) My grandpa was a Mason. I got to see one of their rites too. Thought it was the silliest thing I ever did see....

I would be if I'd managed to stay in college. I was going for Cultural Anthropology focusing on Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales... with a side of Linguistics. I love obscure research. More later, off to lunch now. blaugh

Sir_Catherine Oh I loved this discussion!
What career are you heading into, Ace? Nurse practitioner, actually. smile I'm doing clinicals right now, which pretty much approximate what I'll be doing when I graduate. I really enjoy them. How about you, Sir Catherine? You graduated, right? Did you find the job you wanted?

You graduated, right? Did you find the job you wanted? Where was I when we last spoke? I graduated, but it was a mess of *explicatives here* on the part of the University before I did. I've got a bachelors degree in English, a Child Youth Care emphasis and am working at a book store. And seriously wanting to find something more to do with my life. xp
I'm so glad you're happy with your career; the medical field is an awesome one to enter.

I'm guessing you were perhaps thinking of teaching? With those degrees, I mean. What is it you want to do most in life? What career/position? Thanks! It has a lot of flexibility, which is a major reason for my choosing it. I get bored quickly doing the same job.

Mmm, don't recall off hand what I already told in those threads, so please pardon repeats here. My original ambition was Occupational Therapy, hence the Child Youth Care emphasis. The U dropped OT as a bachelor program and made it a master program end of my third year in college. I was forced, at that late date, to change my major. scream I don't have the mathematical skills for most the hard sciences so I went with my other modest talent, literature, and chose English as my new major. Had the notion that it would work just as well if I then went on to grad school, and it still would if I ever go that route.
Never did have a solid plan for what to do with my new major. More interested at that point in getting out of school since I'd been thrown off my original track. I'd planned on OT since I was in elementary school!! So...never really recovered, I think. I now have a few ideas percolating, though. I'll discuss those in B&G, if you'd like. I'll also probably toss a few more career questions your way. smile
