Hmm...I heard a rumour from someone that the "D" in D.Gray Man actually stands for "Dorian". But I have no idea why or if it's true...P:

There´s a D on Mana´s "skull" so, this might be one of the reasons? the author really said something about it, but , in fact, he hasn´t explained it well xp

Well, I recently got the english D.Gray-Man volume number 4, and around the end, you see a skull floating out of Allen's eye with a "D" on it that looks exactly like the "D" in the D.Gray Man title. All fancy looking and stuff. And What Makeishi said is pretty relevant too. Black and white for the human and akumas. In volume 4 they say that too. "I see the black and white of this world..."

I thought of that too.

Didn't Hoshino-sensei write something about thinking up things in the bath..and he came across the title like that? XDD

That's kinda weird. confused

Blood-Cursed-Angel
Makeishi
I thought it was because Allen fought for both the Akuma's and Human's; Black and White = Gray.

thats what i thought. because Allen destroys to save, and fights for both the good side, (white/humans) and the bad side (black/akuma)
i'd like to know what the D is for though.

Hence there is the latter Crown Clown ability to fight for both sides.

Lolz, maybe the author doesn't speak good english and it's supposed to say something else. XD

Just mostly joking.

This is an old thread...but I'll reply anyways...I read in a recent interview with Hoshino that D.Gray-man meant something about the manga style...like how it's black, white, and gray...and maybe the D does stand for dolls...so yeah...

-revives thread-

well i think it has something to do with the two sides of the story...the good and the bad which can, i guess, be represented by the colors black and white which make the color gray...and i think the 'man' part has something to do with allen...i think he's supposed to be 'gray' because he's a human exorcist but the central(leverrier and link) have some idea that allen might be the '14th' which is a noah...so in some case its like he's a good guy and bad guy at the same time...hence, he's 'gray'...or maybe 'man', meaning that humans are dolls(hence the possible title 'Dolls') of fate who are evil and good. i dont know what the 'D' is for exactly but i think it has something to do with the 'D' on Mana's skull...or the possible title, 'Dolls' or 'death' or maybe 'demon/akuma' or maybe even 'devil' x_x

but thats just my theory...i wish hoshino katsura would fill us in a little more...i guess she's the only one who really knows the symbolism behind the title...i think she explained it somewhere in the manga...

also, i read something on another website:

"...hoshino says she based the earl of millennium off a legendary alchemist/preacher (most likely the count of st. germain or nicolas flamel, though in many ways he also reminiscent of dorian gray, possibly referenced in "dorian grey man" and thus "d.gray-man", as adapted in the film the league of extraordinary gentlemen) whose tale even claims he still may be alive somewhere..."

but the title can have several meanings to it...i heard someone say that the 'D' part was for 'destroyer of time' as in allen is the destroyer of time...katsura-sensei really knows how to torture her fans...
