I agree with it all. Original characters are everything. But I can't say that I haven't ripped some stuff off when I was just doodling. In one of my mangas, I have a vampire hunter. Only problem is that every time I try to redesign him, I come out with the stero-typical vampire hunter. You know, the trench coat, the wide brimmed hat, the works. What else can I do to make him less stero-typical?

Try looking at old/new school movies and checkin' out the designs of the characters that aren't the main. Try to steer away from the typical industrial scheme while still keeping a little of it intact. Also, you might want to try looking at vampires. See what they wear and how you can make something that opposes it, like an antonym. Hell, you could even take a look at the usefulness of clothing items. O.o Think, how in the world is a trench coat going to help you if your in a fight with a vampire? Technically speaking, it probably wont (Though, Animè and Manga have their fictional charms). Give him an outfit he can wear and USE. I hope it helps! 3nodding

I'll skim through my fashion books too see what I can give him that's trendy as well as functional. Thanks! ^_^

My characters take a while to come up with, due to the fact that it's so hard to find originality. I mean, it's almost like everyone has fox ears, cat ears, dog ears, etc. Everyone has stripes on their cheeks, everyone has tails, what have you. If I got a penny for every character who has stripes or something on their face, I would be richer than Bill Gates. (I might be exaggerating a little, but come on people!) There are that many unoriginal characters! It drives me crazy when someone copies a character just because they think the character looks cool, or has interesting features. Honestly- where has the creativity in the world gone? People copy, cheat, plagerize, trace, etc. It's insane! Insane, insane, insane!!!!
When I spend time on my characters, building their personality and features, I don't want them copied! It burns my heart to see my characters, who have been worked on day and night to their fullest originality, stolen. I'm sure anyone would be upset about that. I mean, even the names are hard to get. I wish people would get a life and be original. cry

Okay. I think I get what you're trying to say, but I have one question. If we just do drawings instead of like comics are we allowed to draw anime/manga characters or do we have to create our own? Please help me out by PMing me or leaving a comment or by jsut answering on here. Thank-you very much!

I do agree that it's wonderful to have your own characters. I just wonder though: What about manga artists who use the same character profile/looks but in a different manga of theirs?
One way I come up with my characters is listening to music.
