I don't know man...that certainly is a strange stretch. It also would be building on the fact that Alucard is a creation of man. Which to your boon we can not refute at least no yet. We do however have some background on Dracula. This we can be sure that Dracula's origin is not a creation of man. (well that is according to a story, which is a creation on a man...ger)

(well that is according to a story, which is a creation on a man...ger) Yeah, I know. But wasn't Alucard experimented on by Hellsing? Or am I getting that mixed up... Anyways, if he was experimented on think of how Wrath was born in the FMA manga. He was a normal kid, but grew up in a lab where he was taught school, and fighting tactics. Then when he was 18 some scientists inserted the stine through his viens and he was the only one to survive, and became Wrath. I'm not saying that Alucard is a homunculous, but he is almost like one.

Perhaps Alucard is considered the Philosopher's Stone, or a symbol for it, because of his unique traits. The Stone was supposed to grant immortality. And what can Alucard do as a vampire? The same. Also, the Stone could be created. As you've said, Alucard is also something of a man-made experiment. Or perhaps it's just related to the Stone's ability to transform things?
And as a side note, Hermes is a legendary alchemist, considered by some to be the father of alchemy and the Philosopher's Stone.

And what can Alucard do as a vampire? The same. Also, the Stone could be created. As you've said, Alucard is also something of a man-made experiment. it always sounded to me like the bird of hermes was eating his own wings; that (to me) fits more with the search for penance, holding with the reversal of name and action

If his wings/freedom must be eaten/taken to make him tame then how does the Cromwell approval fit into this? Control is a issue in this story. Who really has control?

well that is a very valid point. i think it's more of a case to case basis as far as the hellsing family goes. when it came to abraham it seems clear that it was a case of subjugation however me willingly submitted to integra so while she still can theortically control him she has (to my memory) never showed that power, and on several occasions he himself was the one to release the cromwell objective.

wow, very interesting conversation 0o..... Never gav a thought for the Hermes poem tho.... Sounds neat, Alucard is complex in his persona and past life. He's the "original" too, so on how to permanently kill him; u're guess is as good as mine talk2hand

Something interesting I just thought of:
Alucard has, on many occasions, come back from what would kill a normal vampire. I know he has been modified, but what if it had something to do not only with science (alchemy, dark arts) but also religion? What if, through all those modifications, he has become a 'messanger of god' himself? Or perhaps is even seeking redemption? I mean, most that I've talked to who have seen the anime will concur that it sure seems to be the power of God that brings him back... granted, it is channeled through the sigils through Hellsing and specifially Integra, being the Hellsing head... he didn't have this power until she opened his final level of power. Your thoughts? I've always assumed there was some sort of "Bible Magic" or holy power involved. After all, the Hellsing are Protestant, so why would they use only occult powers? A messenger of God, that's a good point. It makes the most sense. And he's made himself tame for redemption perhaps? Sounds pretty good. Ohhh, and the "wings" are symbolic of freedom! eek ...I was supposed to have caught on to that a LOOOOOONG time ago, wasn't I? stare *shrinks back into corner* <<;;;;;;;;;;;;; If that is the case then that might be the answer to the question of weather Alucard was forced to become Arthur's servant or came of his own free will. Seems as though he came of his own will.

In the manga and the OVA, it is made quite clear that Alucard, out of fear and respect for Abraham (and all humans) and out of shame and loathing for himself (and all monsters), chose to subject himself to Abraham's will. In the original anime, on the other hand, it's implied that Alucard's servitude was involuntary, specifially through the brief flashback that shows a group of Hellsing soldiers attempting to subdue Alucard in the Hellsing mansion.
Regarding the quote from the Ripley Scroll, I've always considered the phrase "eating my wings to make me tame" to be analogous to "swallowing my pride to serve my master". This, of course, supports voluntary servitude. Thus, I can easily understand why Hirano chose that particular quote to put on Alucard's coffin.

Well, that too. Hirano has said a lot of things, but we can never be sure as to whether or not he was being serious. For instance, the meaning of the quote from the Ripley's Scroll isn't all that deep. In fact, it's quite obvious, especially if you consider how heavily it is implied that Alucard is a willing servant. Thus, I think it's likely that Hirano used it for two reasons: 1) because of its meaning, and 2) because it sounded cool. However, I don't presume to know which of those reasons was more important to Hirano. Although Hirano often seems lazy and shallow, there's a lot of detail and depth in Hellsing that I think speaks for itself.
