American Gods by Neil Gaiman
It's sort of a modern folk tale. Interesting mix of fantasy and Americana. Not for everybody, but I loved it.

My favorite trilogy of the week would be, His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife & The Amber Spyglass) by Phillip Pullman. Just started reading the last book and I'm loving it. Other books I like are of course Lord of the Rings, The Belgariad, Dune (haven't read any of the following books yet), any of the Diskworld novels, anything by Neil Gaiman and The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss Soulmate, The Vampire Diaries (4 books), Dark Visions Trilogy by L. J. Smith Dangerous Wishes by William Sleator (there's a prequel - Spirit House, but I never got around to reading it)
The last two authors are young adult, but I think I'd still like them, now.

xp Oh noes, I can't choose just ONE?!
But since I don't read a lot recently, I will say my most recent and definitively one of my favorite book (more like, manga) ever is:
GOGO MONSTER by Taiyou Matsumoto! heart
I also really like Le Horla, by writer Guy de Maupassant. Mind you, I am french! Hehe. I think it was translated in English if someone cares. It was slightly traumatising, but a deep deeeeep experience.
And another, well, I feel lame since it's such a well-known book, nothing too fancy, but I really DID enjoy Memoirs of a Geisha. I am very passionate for Japan, so this little trip down memory lane was enchanting to me.
*Edited to add* OMG, another well-known one but I cannot pass... All I will say is: ALCHEMIST. Dang!

I really enjoyed reading "The Tower at Stoney Wood" by Patricia A. McKillip and "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury. Two books I place in my all time favorite classics. 3nodding 3nodding
