Were they really in danger here? Lilah didn't think so, but she could sense that Diallo was uncomfortable out in the open like this. He was right to be worried. It wouldn't be smart to remain by the water hole for too long. The puddle in question wasn't much, but it was sure to be visited by local animals before long. Lilah sighed. Too bad, she really was rather achy. It was nice to take a break.
Patches of bleached dry grass grew a little ways from the puddle, perhaps remnants of a time when the pond was more prosperous. Lilah stood with a grunt and marched stiffly over to the tall grass. It wasn't much cover, but it would do for now. Neither of the hyenas was up to another prolonged journey as they searched for shelter. She nosed around, uncovering a slight depression in the grass. With the taller growth to hide them, she and Diallo could nap here for a while. She settled herself down in the grass after a cursory inspection for scorpions and other nasty pests. After that ugly little bug had started following her around, the others had given her some more respect. Too bad the bug wasn't here now. It could have acted as a sentry.

Ruddy eyes watched as Lilah walked off, only then spying the bit of grass. He didn't think it looked like much either, but he wasn't in any shape to move farther off. Reluctantly, the young adult pulled his feet under him and pushed, trudging after Lilah to take a better look at what she had found. He yawned, teeth clacking together as his jaws closed before he laid down beside her. Diallo's tail thumped a handful of times in thanks before stilling as his head was once more rested on his paws. They could rest here, if only for a little bit, until the sun had fully risen and they were in better shape to move off towards shelter. Of course, Diallo knew to some extent his muzzle would be dry then, and probably itchy, and that his legs would ache from not stretching them out. But those were tolerable things compared to being found out in the open, exposed. He wasn't thinking of a sentry, or even of how one of them should stay awake and let the other sleep. His eyelids just slipped closed on their own.

Lilah lay still. Her ears were pricked to alert her of any approaching creature. The ground was hard and rocky despite the layer of dead grass beneath them, but it seemed quite nice after a night on the run. Dust had completely obscured Lilah's markings, turning her an uninteresting shade of brownish black. Beside Diallo, she looked like nothing more than a hump in the ground.
She wasn't normally a deep sleeper. This morning nap was no exception. Despite her weariness, Lilah merely dozed, keeping some small part of her attention focused on their surroundings. Her fevered dreams took place in the land immediately around the two hyenas. The dream creatures faded as soon as Lilah woke several hours later, and the land seemed empty.

As Lilah's coat was transformed from its array of brilliant designs, Diallo's suffered similar damage. They had gotten away from sand only to be faced by dust it seemed. Diallo woke with a sneeze, ears flicking from dust being pushed into them by the wind and nose twitching from the stuff. He clambored to his feet, shaking himself roughly to try and get rid of the worrisome stuff. He was louder than he usually was, that was for certain, and he went to work trying to scrape the dried mud off of his muzzle with his paws.
Even as he did so, his ears pricked back up and swiveled around cautiously. They were still in clan territories, and it was still important to remember that they weren't safe out in the open like this.
