Well ED Reg. I think needs more.

M&R seems fine though. For the most parts the noobs stay out. And our mods are awesome I think smile

Yes, M&R is my usual area and it seems the least spammed, however, I believe it could use one more mod as it takes a while for the offending threads to be taken care of. Longer than in most places. The only reason M&R is okay is that the spammers are too lazy to go all the way there.

The moderator Shaviv of the politics sub-forum is always on and he does a great job keeping the garbage to a minimum.
I think all of Gaia needs more mods, not just the ED. You go to the GD and the CB where the younger kids tend to gather and you see a punch of porn and racism and spam there too. They aren't old enough to appreciate the porn and they shouldn't have to see graphic posts praising Hitler.

While I think more ED mods is a necessity, I think the current "definition" of ED is rather vague. Quite often it's hard to spot what's actually rubbish and what's merely uninteresting/unegaging to you. Perhaps a stronger outlining of ED could be made, which would lead to less reports, which would lead to a lesser need for mods.

This is my biggest pet peeve.

Back when I was still an avid Gaian, posting in the ED for 6+ hours a day, I took it upon myself to try and help out the mods. I reported every single thread that was a repeat or did not belong there, and within the keeper-threads every single post that was further not ED-worthy. After some months of seeing this bear little or no fruit, mostly due to lack of response to the reports by the moderators, I gave up. At the time, I'd hoped that I could someday attain modhood and act as someone to help clean up the place. Now ... I'm honestly not sure if there's any saving it. It's fallen so far that three-quarters of the drivel posted there would have to be moved and the cries of elitism would be loud.

I think I should be a mod.

People keep saying that we need more mods, but no ones steps up to the task.

Could we perhaps start a petition to get me modship?

I'm here all the time, and have been since 2004.

For the most part, I'd say that the ED sub-forums (P, S&T, M&R, S&P) are running pretty decently. They don't see nearly as much traffic as the main forum, which helps.

Let's hold back on nominating ourselves for Moderator positions for right now. I'm sure that most of Gaia's members would love to be put in such a powerful position, and that the Administration is well aware of that fact. They'd pick who they'd pick, for their own reasons.

Indeed: ED and GD often converge, as do GD and the Chatterbox. Stricter definitions might help, but I'd be lying if I thought that the majority of new, casual members paid the guidelines any heed at first.

I'd agree with you that Gaia needs more Moderators, but cleaning up the Chatterbox is simply a statistical impossibility. The Chatterbox is, far-and-away, the most post-heavy forum on Gaia. There are hundreds--maybe even thousands--of posts made there every second, or so it seems. The Mods of the Chatterbox will be swamped, no matter how many there are (unless, maybe, their numbers reach into the hundreds).

I'm trying to be a bother or anything.

Just trying to rise to the occasion.

Seriously, we need more mods. I understand how life can be busy so perhaps more mods would be helpful. Perhaps if we had stricter rules and a heavier watch (more mods watching more carefully) then maybe we could clean up the ED a little.

I have a slight idea... I don't know if it was raised earlier but perhaps if we could help Fuben ask for more mods, perhaps they will realize that the ED needs the help and clean up.

Yes, I would really like for there to be more moderators. Even if it's only a temporary thing (which, by the way Gaia has been advertising in magazines, probably wouldn't end up being a temporary thing).

The need for more mods is a tough subject with no easy answers. Yes, we need mods who are actually online and check reports. I have reported pointless boards only to see them still up and even longer the next time, and some people who are trying to help seem to only encourage the trolls.

the least spammed? no, it's spammed more then ed-p.
whenever shaviv is moderating things get cleaned up awefully quick. i hate deorhide, i think she brings up to much bias in her modding.
and that's really it for actual active mods on ed-p and ed-mr
half the threads in MR are actually troll threads, and no one bothers to troll ed-p because everyone there is prepared to use rhetoric, because that's what we do.

I'm not sure if more mods are the answer. I think what we need are different mods, as what we have isn't working. Look at me purposefully not saying my opinions on specific mods, but they're not working. A nomination system would be good, especially for helpers. The current apprenticeship style to becoming a helper is too discriminatory, and just because the mod likes you doesn't mean you're good at what you do. I love some of our helpers, but others... no comment on how they got their position. They could also really use some more powers, they are way too limited.

On a more specific note? I really miss Cloverina. Maybe it's just because I'm an '04er, but it seems like the ED started to go downhill after she left.

Most things to say here, have been said. So I'll keep it simple.

More mods = good.

More mods, with the balls to get down and dirty = better.

More mods, with the balls to get down and dirty, but the wisdom not to abuse their power = best. (So, in short, we need an AI...)

The only real problem, is that it almost seems as if the number of trollers and spammers increases in direct proportion to the number of mods. It's like they get together and discuss that, or something.

A real solution to the problem would be for what mods we already have, to just start IP banning. That's simple enough, isn't it?

Actually? Not really. IP banning is a serious thing for them to do, and since alot of ED haters are from 4Chan and/or savvy enough to just change their IP adress [it's really, really easy, especialy if you're on wireless], it's alot of trouble for little profit.
