Kevin just looked at Natsuko with a disgusted look. "You also leave yourself vulnerable to be hurt," he said trying to hide the hurt in his voice. He's experienced pain before, as have most people. The best defense is a layer of ice around the heart, he always thought. He dropped his half eaten apple onto his tray and started to stand up. "I'm full," he said curtly. Natsuko had some insightful remarks, but Kevin pushed them from his mind. It was his way that made brought him to the top. Sure, she may be up there as well with a different approach. But he did it his way. he doesn't have to imitate others to achieve greatness. He was able to accomplish that on his own. And that's how it will stay, he thought.
Kevin stood up and grabbed his tray. The 'other' students were slowly starting to trickle into the cafeteria. As he emptied his tray and left it, he glanced down towards his watch. It was ten until seven and not all the students were even starting breakfast. It was despicable. Kevin headed towards the Dorm building. He'd have to collect his things for class now so he wouldn't be late.

Natsuko watched as he walked away from her. Well that didn't work out very well she said putting her pocky in her bag. Sighing she took her tray and emptied the trash in the garbage and putting her plate and tray with the dirty dishes. She sighed heavily again as people rushed in the room to get food.
Filling up another cup of coffee she decided to go sit out in the sun and read until classes started again. Her failed attempt at friendship had upset her, truth is she didn't feel like talking to any of her friends right now anyway, most would fuss over everything that had happened in the summer, asking her if she was ok, and how she was handling everything.
"Being top of the class isn't everything, I'd trade everything to have them back...." She said to Kevin's back, near the brink of tears again.

As Kevin entered the dorm hall, he noticed that even more students were just leaving their rooms. They're not getting breakfast, he thought as the line would probably be notrotious by now. And the time alloted for breakfast would soon come to an end. He walked against the flow of students until he reached his room. Fortunately, it was the first door. He opened the door and walked inside, closing it behind him. The room itself was pretty small and the clusters of paper and books and many things posted on the walls made it feel even smaller. The only thing that wasn't overburdened with something was his bed. In fact, it was the only thing that was neat, made and everything.
Kevin picked up a piece of paper that was lying on some open books on the desk next to the bed. English, Math, then my science classes, he thought to himself as he turned around and grabbed his backpack. These were his first four classes. He'd have time after lunch to gather his other class supplies. Right now, he preferred to carry the least he could. He grabbed his bag and then headed to the small love seat at the foot of his bed. He went through a small pile of books until he grabbed the four required for class and stuffed them into his bag. He grabbed an extra notebook and some pens and pencils. When he was content, he zipped up the bag and placed it neatly on his bed. As he dropped his bag he noticed Natsuko sitting outside alone. "They might be wonderful people," he said to himself staring out his window, "but you still look alone to me."

Natsuko leaned against the tree, a book in her lap. She glanced at her watch to make sure she wasn't going to be late for class no need to tranish her perfect record because of it. If you didn't know her personally you'd probably believe she would be reading some long obnoxious novel, something smart, or at least witty. Instead she sat reading a book ment for teenagers called "Define normal" Oddly she identified with the characters in the book.
People hurried past her, attempting to get food at the last minute. Most would end up going hungry, or getting a few left over scraps left from the hungry students that had come earlier. A few people yelled hello's to her, she simply waved, avoiding eye contact. She hadn't really been happy since the accident, her back still ached at times, and if she pushed herself too hard her chest burned. They had told her to take a light schedual this school year, so she dropped out of a few sports. However she held fast to her academic schedual, the only thing that distracted her from her life was her schooling.

Kevin lifted his bag and headed for the door again. Before leaving he stopped in front of his bathroom door and looked inside at the mirror. He fixed his tie, making it straight, then smiled. He may be a p***k, but he was definitely good looking. He opened the door and noticed that the flood of students from before had finally dried out leaving an hallway. Kevin closed his door behind him and locked it. He placed the key into his pocket and began to head back outside.
Kevin paid no attention towarsd Natsuko. He personally had enough of her for the day...and he still had a bunch of classes to endure. Fortunately, they didn't talk to each other. At all actually, this seemed to be the first tiem either of them made any approach towards each other, aside from the school play which was forced upon them. He continued along his path, which didn't bring him anywhere near Natsuko. He walked towards the back of the school where the fields were placed. He smiled, sports was one way for him to get his mind off of things. The goal was simple in sports...win. And that's what Kevin flourished at.

Checking her watch again, she noticed it was getting close to 7:30. She placed the book in her bag and cleaned the grass off the back of her skirt. Adjusting her dress and socks, she made her way leisurely into the school. Her bag was obnixiously heavy, despite the fact she only had books for 4 class. Her Advanced compostion book was huge, as was the AP Calculus book. She would probably have a bruise by the end of the day.
The hallway was very crowded with people, lucky for her, composition was on the first floor. However calculus was on the very top floor for the building, so she would eventually have to make her way the 4 flights of stairs. Getting to the classs was proving difficult, though she was popular she was rather short, so she had to duck her way under arms and even once slipped through a girls legs.
She arrived at the class room and smiled at the teacher. "Ohayo gozimasu, sensei." She said, and english class was probably not the best place to speak japanese, but the teacher simply smiled at her.
"Good morning Natsuko, I assume you have your summer assignments completed." She said to her, knowing that she mostly definetly had, more then likely she had not only completed the assignment, but also did all the optional reading, and of course she was right.
"Here you are, I look forward to this years class." She said, handing over a ten page paper, on the merits of going to class all year round. The paper only had to be 4 pages, but it was very like her to go above and beyond. Taking a seat in the front row, dead center she waited for the students would be filtering in soon, as there was like then 10 minutes till the start of class.

Kevin stayed looking at the field for a few moments. At least it seemed only a few moments to him. When he looked at his watch it was seven fifteen. He turned around and headed for the main campus building. He noticed Natsuko in front of him and heading in the same direction. He knew they both took the same type of English class but wasn't aware that they were actually in the same class until he came in right after she did. He took his usual seat in all classes: second row in, second seat back.
Kevin placed his bag on the ground and started to unzip it. He heard Natsuko's familiar Japanese greeting. Cultural, he assumed as he pulled out his book and his summer assignment. It was only slightly more difficult than a breeze for him. His subject was on the effects of technology in the past two decades. It was a four page report, but Kevin handed in nine pages. He smiled towards the teacher, "Here's the summer assignment, m'am." When she took his papers he nodded and then walked past Natsuko without acknowledging her. He took his seat and looked at the clock on the wall above the door. At that moment the first bell rang signifying that there was only five minutes left to get to class.

Natsuko watched Kevin as he walked past her. She sighed deeply, realizing she had done all she could to be his friend. More students started filing into the class, many looked exhausted and tired. The back row filled up first and slowly moved it's way forward as more and more people showed up. The class had about 20 students, as they school made sure class sizes were managable for the teachers. People passed up their summer assignments, most exactly 4 pages, a few were 5. But nothing like the near novels herself and Kevin had already passed in.
The girl that sat behind Natsuko, played with the ends of her hair in the flirtacious manner. Natsuko had gone on a date with her once, but found the girl too shallow for her liking, the girl still flirted with her often though, always asking her out on dates. The bell sounded, alerting everyone that classes were now beginning.
"Good morning class," The teacher started, and began droning on about persuasive writing. Natsuko put her head down and started writing notes, hoping to shake the girls pathetic attempts to grab her attention off. She really didn't feel like dealing with her right now, but a few moments later a note dropped into her lap.
"We're having a welcome back party tonight be there." Natsuko sighed and nodded. She looked over at Kevin, who was also taking notes. She wrote on a piece of paper "Party tonight... come please..." she said dropped on the desk behind her, so the girl could pass it to him. It didn't hurt to try anyway...

As the girl next to him kept trying to get his attention, Keving ignored her attempts and continued to write down some notes. It was actually just something to keep himself busy. Persuasive papers were his favorite to write. Finally getting annoyed the girl just tossed the folded up piece of paper at him. Kevin turned to her with a stern look. She immediately looked away and pretended to pay attention to the teacher. "Damn imbeciles," he said softly as he looked down at the paper on the floor. He ignored it at first, just placing one foot on top of it so the teacher wouldn't go and pick it up.
Curiosity finally getting the best of him he leaned down and picked it up. The teacher had finished her lecture and was now handing out the writing assignment due in two days, though she wanted to rough draft tomorrow. Each paper was unique, as in it had a different topic from the rest. It was to be a five page persuasive paper about the topic and the stance in which you chose. She started at the other end of the room, giving Kevin enough time to open up the folded paper and read its contents. Party? he thought confused, Why am I being asked to a party? He crumpled the paper into his fist and looked around the room, his first thought was that it was the girl next to him who was asking.

Natsuko looked back at Kevin, she usually didn't pass notes in class, but if she was going to be stuck at the party, she atleast wanted someone who would talk about something other then who is dating who right now. Further more, she would need to hide from the girl who had invited her in the first place.
The teacher reached her and handed her a slip of paper and walked back to the girl behind her. She heard her sigh loudly as she read her topic. Natsuko looked down at her paper, "School uniforms." Her topic didn't seem so bad, so she smiled at it. She happened to like school uniforms so they topic would be easy for her to write on.
She looked over again at Kevin, wondering what topic he had been given.

As Kevin looked around the classroom, he noticed Natsuko looking over at him. He tilted his head ever so slightly wondering if it was her that had requested his presence at the party. She even said please, he thought as the teacher handed him his paper. He smiled as he took it and looked through the instructions. Unlike most of the previous papers, this one had to be handwritten. It was usually required that the essays and papers be typed but this one was different. Just as he pondered this, the teacher went into explaining why. She wanted to make sure that the summer hadn't gotten to anyone and that writing it by hand would 'add the personal touch of your thoughts and ideas'. Kevin thought it was an interesting idea. If only the others would actually place their own thoughts into it, he scoffed mentally. He the scanned the paper until he reached his topic. "Government funding higher education," he said lowly to himself. It was a great idea, since college or a similar like is just about required for any job now adays. If the government would fund for people to go then they would not only get an education, but be productive people to the country. Kevin smiled at this topic. He liked it; it would certainly allow him to push through to the others the importance of education.
Then bell rang and Kevin looked up at the clock. The class had ended. Already? Kevin wondered how the time went by so fast. He packed his book and assignment into his bag and as he zipped it up looked towards Natsuko to see if she was still staring at him. Why me?

Natsuko gathered up her stuff, and purposely avoided the girl that sat behind her. There wasn't much time between classes and the girl probably was taking some easy courses, hopefully far away from her. Natsuko smiled at Kevin as she picked up her bag.
"My hand is going to cramp writing this paper, " She said, ignoring the girl as she walked past, if she looked deep in conversation then maybe, just maybe she wouldn't be bothered. Luckily, the girl got into the conversation with one of the more popular boys in the senior class and went about flirting with him. Natsuko sighed happily.
"You should come, I'm not saying it will be a blast, but you might find some stimulating conversation. Further more, since we have the same GPA, there will be a vote for who gets class valedictorian, and you'll never beat me if you don't socialize a bit." She knew that would be the clincher, if it did come down to a class vote, Natsuko would win by a landslide, everyone liked her and everyone would want to hear her speak at graduation. Leaning against is desk so that he couldn't get by without giving her an answer, or forcefully moving her, which she doubted even he would do.

Kevin stood up and slung his pack onto his back. He tried to ignore Natsuko but was unable to walk by without having to climb over another desk. "Fine," he said out of desperation, "I'll think about going. It depends on how much work I have after all my classes. We may have the same GPA but if I don't finish my work because of the party, it won't matter about the damned student body." Again he tried to get past but was unable to. He exhaled deeply showing agitation. "Why do you want me there anyway?" he asked now trying to figure her out, "I mean if you want Valedictorian as well, then why try 'social' me up when that means helping the opponent." It was an interesting question and one that he had no clue about. She could make a comment about wanting a 'challenge' or a 'close battle', but Kevin had a feeling it was different from that. There was a real reason for this.
Kevin gritted his teeth in annoyance. "If you'll excuse me I have to get to the top floor for my class," he said trying to hurry her along. "And if you didn't know these books are quite heavy." He had AP Calculus next and it was on the fourth floor. Four flights of steps with his bag would be tiresome, even for someone as athletic as him.

Natsuko smiled patting her bag, "I do thank you, because I also have AP Calculus next." She said letting her lead the way, "And before you think it's some sort of cosmic fluke, they only offer one AP Calculus class in the whole school, same with physics." She said adjusting the strap on her bag. She followed behind him and touch his shoulder gently.
"First off, while I would like to be Valedictorian, I could live without. Regardless I already have my scholarship, since I'm sure I didn't bomb the SATs and ACTs" she said brushing her hair over she shoulder. "Secondly, I like to make friends and it seems like you need atleast one." She said, poking his side gently. It was partically true after all. Besides, she didn't really desire to be around happy perky people right now. The hallway was crowded again, people pushing and shoving to get to classes. Everything was a blur of red, black and white, with people pushing and shoving each other in the halls.
"Besides that, you're bigger then me.... so if I attach myself to you I might make it through the halls without getting trampled." Like he would really care about that, but she put on her big smile and giggled a little, hoping he would tolerate her holding onto his shirt while they made their way through the hall.
