i think he does eat because i mean he is pretty rich considering he gets paid to be a phantom. 20,000 francs a month is a lot.

I think he uses the money to maintain his traps/secret entrances, etc. and bribe certain officials *CoughMadamGirycough* into not revealing his secrets.
