"We'd have to get your father's permission. And then there'd be very little time you'd be back at your own house, Biard." he pointed out, pulling out one of his skinning knives and tapping it against the side of the well thoughtfuly. "Winter is the best season for pelts, when their fur is thick and warm, and not easy. We'd be out for long stretches. No Mass. No Town. No mother or brothers." He tucked his knee up and studied the boy intently. This was why he hadn't taken on an apprentice. He didn't much think that many of those who dreamed of joining him had an clear picture of what it could really mean.

"Really? I wouldn't have to see ma for a few days?" He chuckled, taking himself a seat beside Bran. Of course Bran of all people would know of the boy's closeness to his mother. How at the end of the day after toddling around behind Bran to share his stories about fighting off evil Vikings and defending the lords of the land he'd run at full speed home at his mother's call, leaping into her arms. He did fancy trying to be a hunter. When he was a year younger he'd managed to kill a rat and had brought it to Bran having wanted to learn how to skin it.

"Come on, Bran, I'm old enough. I don't -need- my mom for a few days. I'm going to be a man soon." Or so he told himself. "You can at least teach me. I bet even my father has to hunt while he's fighting. Keep his men fed and bring back a nice pelt for ma."

"We need your fathers goodwill. Not mine." He noted, turning the knife around and prodding Baird in the nose with the hilt. "Ask him. He make have other planed for your apprenticeship. So save your begging and pleading for him when he returns. I will not go against his given right in this." He noted, shaking his head. "It's not my place."

Baird's freckled nose wrinkled up into a bit of a scowl, "But he won't be back for a few more weeks. What am I gonna do till then? Ma says I need to be more productive with my time." Of course he didn't even consider helping around the house... doing chores, stacking wood, or feeding the old mule. His older brothers could take care of all that stuff... Jardin was already an apprentace to a blacksmith. He never heard the end of that one... He was allowed to own a real sword.

He brightened a bit, "I can help you stretch the skins! I can do that I bet."

"Then help your mother." he snorted. "I don't care for your excuses. "my brothers can do it'. Indeed. Jardin's working as a blacksmiths apprentice, that takes up his time. She needs you and your brothers to be what you're MEANT to be. The Men of the house until your father returns. How can you say you're almost a man if you want to act like an infant?" He challeneged, looking a touch irritated. "No. No skins, no hunting...Nothing until your father returns. IF. THEN. I won't take on an apprentice who'd rather slap trees and rocks with a switch than do an honest bit of work. You'd think you were some lordlings brat....Honestly boy." He stood up, sheathing the knife and shaking his head. "The answer is no."

Baird's shoulders slumped down a bit. Disappointed, yes, but also well-scolded. His mother said the same thing often. He had his head in the clouds more than a little boy should. He was younger than his brothers but old enough to carry wood or handle the old mule.

He tossed the switch away from him, "Alright. But if I finish my chores can I come watch you? You make better conversation than Gale and Brenthin... all they talk about is girls." He wrinkeld his nose up. Yup, still at the age where girls had coodies.
