You do realize that if you legalize prostitution the you won't eliminate the problems surrounding it, right? There will still be pimps but they'll have the law on their side. The increased supply in prostitutes without a similar increase in demand will lower the prices of prostitutes and the street walkers will still have an edge by the virtue that they'll be willing to "work" for lower prices than the legal prostitutions. Legalizing prostitution will also set a pretty scary precident in that the state sets up rules for what you can and can not do with your body and you would have to pay for a liscence to give you the right to sell your body. That's an invasion of privacy I'd rather not see.

See, this was a debate in my Humanities class last year, and the side against was basically "THE PIMPS ARE EVIL AND HEARTLESS AND WOULD BECOME LEGAL AND YOU DON'T WANT THAT!" She was basically regurgitating what we had been told in a mini-assembly on the sex trade, which had all about how prostitution was BAD and how the pimps were EVIL and such. It's only bad because it's illegal - if it were legalized, prostitutes could report employer brutality to the police and the employer could be charged, furthermore, the prostitutes would be paid, so the street workers would have an incentive to get a license and actually be paid.

Nah, I'd make stricter laws against pimping.

Pimps would probably continue to exist, but in the same black market, freelance no-man's-land in which they operate already. If it's either the Ministry of Sex or some guy with a revolver tucked in his briefs, which would you pick?

There's always a demand for prostitutes, the only way you could actually "inflate" prostitution would be by running out of johns. What the free market could supply, though, is stuff that isn't legal, but that the johns want anyway. Probably for a higher price than from a licensed brothel, I would guess, because the demand for the seedier sexual services would rise as the supply of desperate prostitutes willing to perform them shrinks.

Eh, given that it's using your body as a cash business, I'd say that it's better to err on the side of regulation. Since there are dangers both to customers and to licensee involved which somebody unwilling to apply for the license will probably amplify through neglect.

Even if you don't require STD tests, there is a certain amount of basic hygiene and (say) condom use that is preferable as a minimum for somebody who'll have multiple sexual partners over short periods. That's the sort of thing you can test without invading the integrity of anythin'.

Pimping was brought up a couple times during this debate. To clarify, there would be no pimping if prostituting was legal. The reason prostituting is illegal is because the pimps take a portion of the money and they are not being taxed.

It seems ridiculous to me that prostituting is illegal in the first place.

So yeah, I'm all for it.

Same here 3nodding Well, you know, if we do eventually legalize it, the actuality of prostituting may be safer than it would be if it had been legal. That is just hypothetically speaking.

Yes, it definitely is- who is the government, or one person, to decide what is "pure and right" and what is not?

Example:

I personally believe killing animals is wrong and that eating eat is WRONG WRONG WRONG.

But that's my belief, obviously, how would BUSH feel if I outlawed steak and burgers?

Surprisingly, I agree. I mean, I am 100% against premarital sex, but my thoughts have always been do with your own body as you wish.

Everyone else basically already covered it...

By regulation I mean like how it is done in the Philippines. Every week the prostitutes have you get checked for VD. If you fail your VD test, you get your license removed.

Why? Caveat emptor xd

In all seriousness, a prostitute who does happen to have a VD can specialize in terms of clients who also have that same disease [and thus couldn't, in good conscience, patronize a healthy prostitute]

Interesting thought, that. I suppose that makes some sense.

And of course, the rare customer/prostitute who knows about the potential disease and doesn't mind.

Do with your body as you wish... except before marriage. But presumably you've considered how legal prostitution will draw people OUT of martial bonds to have sex with others, yes? If you truly hold marriage important and consider it a sexual restraint, why do you support this?

Anyway, I say legalize. For ******** sake, I don't care who has sex with who, and really, it's not a pleasant job - they should actually GET the money they work for. That, and pimps need to be removed from the picture entirely - they are an entirely negative impact.

I think Liz meant she was personally against premarital sex but wouldn't stop someone else from having it.

@Cougar - I haven't met anyone like that, but considering humanity these days I wouldn't be suprised.
