Just saw it last night (Saturday)! I was really looking forwards to this one, as both a longtime Pixar fan and a longtime comic book fan! (I mean it. You should see my dorm room. Comic books and action figures everywhere.) My verdict: This is as good as cinema gets.
My favorite aspect was the character design! It's driving me crazy, though, not being able to attach names to all of the people that certain characters were based off, like Edna and Huph. Those two have been driving me crazy on who they were modeled after....
Every character is just to die for. (Especially Edna, Syndrome, and Incredible's boss, Gilbert Huph!)
The action is fresh and exciting. (Dash's high-speed chase on the island and Elastigirl's sneaking through the compound.)
The humor is top-notch. (Monologues! Capes! Frozone and his wife!)
The graphics..Oh, don't get me started on how great they are! (Pay especial attention to the treatment of hair and that shot of the side of the tropical mountain!)
Movement is fantastic. (Pay attention to Frozone's skating moves.)
I really loved the way that they handled the subject matter, too. I went into it fully expecting references to existing superheros and their trappings, but I was delighted to see the route that they took in making everything generic. There were no overt parodies or jokes, which was just the right way to go.
Also, although the movie features some very big names in its cast, like Samuel L. Jackson (Frozone), Wallace Shawn (Gilbert Huph), and Holly Hunter (Elastigirl), just to name a very few, have you heard about it at all? No! Wonderful, wonderful Pixar! That's one of Dreamworks' biggest turn-offs to me: The way they make a big deal about who their cast is. It shows that that's all they've got going for them. Pixar puts their emphasis on having a solid story instead. Hooray, hooray!
In a nutshell: I'll be at the store the first day it's out on DVD.
Post-Script: The
website is pretty fun, too.
