I've already said most of my characters come from friends. Then I give them a past, make up connections between them (some rather warped), change their personalities, sometimes to fit the past, a little bit and I have a full fledge character that I would not throw out. Until they die or get killed. Even that doesn't work in the case of Hiro.

Personally, I like fresh starts and new perspectives on my writing, so I may end up abandoning or letting some plots/character sit for awhile.

... Well, not all characters can stay the whole way in a fantasy or adventure novel or series. That would be unrealistic, wouldn't it?

Erm. A lot of my characters are rebuilds of ones from ages ago, and those came from my imagination. Occasionally, I'll base a character off a friend's personality, but not often. o.o

the realm of dreams brings these characters and tales to life, mysterious interlopers from the in-between. i wander this evanescent landscape observing, asking questions, knocking on doors to see who will answer. i walk unafraid through the ones that will open; those who respond to my queries become living characters in two worlds: the land of imagination as well as the domain of dreams. to enter the third, the realm called 'reality', requires use of the written word by which the dream stories might be heard by others, whence the characters then take on a life beyond that of their original conception. those that are loved, live on in the minds of readers, changing, growing, adapting to the new imaginative energies they encounter via each new pair of eager eyes awaiting the next chapter/volume/verse.

Personally, I like fresh starts and new perspectives on my writing, so I may end up abandoning or letting some plots/character sit for awhile.I may not use a character but I do keep it. I like to have it just to have incase I need it later. I do like fresh starts as well.

Sure you can. Just ignore the character for a couple of years and you'll forget all about it. Maybe, maybe not. I tend to remember insignifigant details like that after a long time, so I probably would remember, somehow. I still remember several characters I wrote about in third grade, if I used them enough.

Domerin Thompson I can see that; I've used the main five characters of Bellator for so long that I make up things about them even when I'm working on another story, or, even worse, in Mass. I can't put them out my mind anymore. It's starting to get that way for me with Amelia. She's pretty similar to, if not an alternate version of, myself, I guess. I'm trying to make her different, but it's getting harder and harder as time goes by to edit her personality...

I have a character I love. Her name is Alice Quarts and she is a disgusting drunk who wastes her money on alcohol. I try to show her personality through her clothing and the way she looks. With my current project, I describe her (and this is just how she is when she first shows up) in faded colored panties with the elastic hanging from the band and a too short shirt because she shops in the little kids section to save money and it's easy to infer what for. I love her but I'm also going to love the way she's going to change through out my story. <3 Also, I show her character through her language and her empty inspirations and such.
Hm... I see nothing wrong with basing a character off your personality, as long as people who do this realize they aren't perfect and show their flaws and not just what they want people to see, and that may mean picking your nose. With Alice I do have her based off of my personality a bit, ecspecially the empty inspirations. Not the drinking, I find it icky. >.<

Of course, there are differences, and in no way is she a Mary Sue, but in some ways she's what I'd like to become. Not perfect, but that's fine. I want to portray her as a strong person who makes mistakes and goes on from them. I wanted to name a character Alice... I really like the name.
