TheDarkMercenary Norofel Call me when you get there, Snow! We're going to invade there and molest any bookstore we see that has Le Fantôme de l'opéra! xD Or you could just order it!!! I've just placed an order for Kay's "Phantom" but the only copy available is in America. So I've paid £25 to have it imported for me. You won't regret it, especially if you are pro-Erik. It is indeed an excellent book; I honestly couldn't put it down! Brava to you for putting so much effort into your summary! It indeed refreshed my memory of our beloved tale. As mentioned, I believe that there is no reason for a person such as Erik to exist (I mean, the homeless have to sleep somewhere, don't they? And anyone can have a special talent or an unfortunate incident and/or deformation), though the character's resume, if you will, is a bit long for me to believe.

I think there was a Phantom of the Opera. It may not have been the same person all the time but in some sence the phantom was always, and in spirit, is always there.
At least that is what I think. blaugh

Let me offer just one comment...I just read, like, the first paragraph because I don't feel like reading long posts at the moment. Erik's mask DOES include the mouth. This is made obvious in his one monologue: Leroux "Here, I raise my mask a little -- oh, only a little! -- you see my lips?" This, coincidentially, happens to be my favorite monologue in the whole boooooooooooooooooook..... BOUNCE! ECHO! WHEE!

Thank you, Elanchana, that was quite a help. I simply remember in the movie that they had the full mask with a tiny cloth to cover the lips and I was confused as to how a mask could fit over any lips, including Erik's..
I loved it as well when she showed his talents as a ventriloquist.

Sorry for the double-post, but I have made a discovery!
The discovery: exactly WHY Leroux picks a grasshopper and made it "hop jolly high".
In French...
sauterelle=grasshopper
sauter=hop
sauter=explode
O.o
So in the French version "la sauterelle saute joliement bien" could either mean "the grasshopper hops beautifully well" or "the grasshopper explodes beautifully well".
We don't have phenomena like this in English.

Norofel Whew, I'm relieved someone read it. Typing that out was insane, I kept redoing it afraid I had missed something. sweatdrop
There may have been a partial Erik. He may not have been the trap door lover with a skilled lasso hand, he may not have been the very first ventriloquist, but perhaps there was a secretive singer that lived in the depths of the opera. This story was the first to move me like it did, and even if there was never a fragment of the Erik, he's still here with me. xP I loved that book and actually i think that eric was a lot hotter then the movie one because the movie one was to hollywood like the face really wasnt that bad, i probably coudld do that with makeup too *wink wink*

3) easier to watch movie than read 9 million page book razz

It'll be worth it.

It'll be worth it. I totally second that!!!! I was raised watching the movie versions and the play then when i was old enough to read the book the movies don't do it justice! A phantom phan that hasn't read the book isn't a real phan!

I'd put money towards it! Anyone else interested? When I say shovels, I mean to find the vaults, not to try and find Erik's corpse! I've always wanted to go to the Paris Opera house!!! I know they do have an underground lake as well!!! The remains of his home could be there hidden in a watery grave!!!

Anyway, the revelation of the French "sauter" is truly fantastic. I hadn't realised that and I speak French!!! I should really pay more attention! In retrospect, the charactor of Erik/ The Phantom is far too well rounded and there are too many aspects of truth to ignore. The details may vary, e.g. the mask being full-face or half-face, but there has to be at least a slither of truth in the essence of the tale.

I'd love to believe it, but what crimes did Erik commit before he came to Paris? Even Daroga agrees that the only reason they wanted him dead was because he knew too many secrets about the palaces he built during "the rosy days of Mazenderin." (sp?) The people in the torture chambers of those palaces were prisoners sentenced to death. That's part of what made me cry. He didn't earn his death sentences until after he helped build the Opera.
