Yea, as Grevious Angel said, There were other armors before Halo: CE. If you have read the books they didn't have sheilded suits to begin with, they just had suits. This might not even be a suit related to the Mojolnir project.
Personally I'm guessing that the spartans don't have the sheilds, atleast to begin with. And as for the flood and forerunner, they say that it takes place before the first deadly encounters but they don't say how for along the game brings you. I doubt it will be ahead of the Halo 2 timeline, if it is it will only be another teaser. Despite that it might go to the current timeline, maybe possible suit upgrades for the spartans.
The high amount of spartans around in the trailer suggest that it wasn't johns group or it was before they went through the chemical enhancements, so the spartans won't be as strong.

I was looking forward to that Halogen mod for C&C Generals made by the guys at slipstream productions. But since bungie and microsoft banned it I only have this to look forward to.
Great details by the way. One more thing... I'm thinking that this is not the chief's 75 spartans he grew up with, must be Spartans from the previous Spartan 1 project testing out the material for John's group
