Covet looked around the now slightly cozy shop and then turned her eyes back to Matador. His lack of emotion scared her. She had known he would be at least upset with her for disappearing. Without even that, a cold terror seared through her heart. It was just as she had feared, he no longer wanted her now that he had Enoch. But... then why was he here? It wasn't exactly like Taliesin was out in the open or in the parts of the city Matador would normally be found in.
"I'm not hiding," she replied softly, glancing down at the flagstone floor she had been sure to scrub clean just a few days earlier. "What are you doing here?" she asked, looking back up at him.

"I think that is my line, Covet," Matador said, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall. "You disappear in the middle of the night without so much as a word, and I get an accusation from Mecca that I'm the reason you here."
Matador didn't care of Mecca was present or not. Without him present, he would speak his mind freely, even if it meant leaving Covet behind to be with that psychopath. He insulted Matador simply by stepping foot in Veronica, filling his head with ideas that Covet was upset, and now he was here, Matador realized he'd been played.
"I've been worried sick and I find you here lounging about, reading books, and shacking up with Him?" Matador spat, his eyes narrowing at the thought of Mecca.

Covet blinked in utter shock at Matador's mention of Mecca being the one to tell him where she was. She tried to wrap her mind around that for a moment, but all thoughts were put on hold at Matador's next words. Taking an involuntary step backwards to get away from his anger, she nearly fell back into the worn leather seat. Stretching her wings and reaching behind her to catch herself against the arm of the chair, she righted herself and a frown slipped over her features.
"Worried sick? You honestly want me to believe you've been worried sick about me? I'm almost certain you haven't given me a second thought. Why would you need to? You have your precious Enoch to distract you well enough," she spat right back at him.

"Is that what this is about? Enoch?" Matador gawked, a confused expression crossed his face. "Is she the reason I've been accused of breaking your heart and driving you out here?!"
He couldn't believe it. After all the their time together, their family was being torn apart by Covet's jealousy for Enoch. He put on hand on his hip and the other covered his face in sheer annoyance. He came all the way here to be yelled at.
"If that's what you really think of me, then you know nothing about me after all the time we've lived together, Covet," Matador sighed, shaking his head and pushing his ruby red hair from his eyes. "My heart isn't so small that there's only room for one other person. I thought you knew that."

"I know nothing about you? How can you honestly stand there and look me in the eye and tell me I know nothing about you when it's you who knows nothing about me!" she yelled getting really upset. "All I've ever wanted was you Matty! You're everything to me and it kills me to see you with her and to hear about all the wonderful things you do for her, when I want nothing more than to be the one in her place. And now..." she trailed off as tears started to roll down her cheeks. "And now... I'll never be able to have you. I heard what you told her and what she told you and I saw the kiss too." Holding his eyes with hers, she reached up and brushed her tears away, angry that she would bother to spill them over this again.

Covet's confession floored him. He quickly replayed every interaction in his head, and things hand a dramatically different perspective with this new information. All the hugs, hand holdings, affectionate kisses. Everything completely changed. He hated it when Covet cried. How is it that women always play the crying card?
"You've had my protection and friendship the entire time. Was that not enough?" Matador sighed, shaking his head and looking at the floor. "I've never flaunted my relationship with Enoch, Covie. I am sorry that you saw what was intended to be a private moment. You've always been like a younger sister to me, and I am sorry that I can't give you more than brotherly love."
Disappointment washed over him. He honestly never knew Covet thought or expected more. The stale air of the shop suddenly felt hot. Too hot. He unzipped his jacket, and fidgeted with the collar. "So what possessed you to come here instead of coming to me directly? Unfortunately, now Mecca is involved in our situation, and he made it quite clear that he'd prefer you sever ties with me all together. Is your messenger's information correct?"

"It was more than enough Matty, but I wanted more so that I could give something back to you," she said, sniffing and wiping away her tears. She watched him unzip his coat and took a deep breath to calm herself down. His next words floored her. She had been confused earlier by his mention of Mecca, but to have him say that Mecca would want her to sever her ties with Matador just stunned her.
"I.... How could I come to you Matty? My heart was broken and you were the one that broke it. Where else was I supposed to go?" she managed to get out as her mind tried to work out what he had just informed her about Mecca.
"As... for Mecca... I don't understand what you're talking about," she said, giving her head a small shake. "What do you mean he wants me to sever ties with you? That makes less sense than him going to you," she said with confusion, her hand subconciously wrapping itself around the pendant Mecca had given to her a few days earlier.

"That's what he told me. I was shocked that he came to Veronica in the first place, but then he said that and then proceeded to mention how "insatiable" you are now that you're grown up... in front of the entire bar."
Matador's voice trembled in anger at the last part. Even reiterating that pest's own words. He never pictured himself with Covet, not like that. Unfortunately, images of Mecca and her flooded through his head. It only added further anger. Out of all the Shu out there, why did she have to pick Mecca?
"I never asked nor expected anything from you, Covet. Seeing your smile was all the payment I could ever need," Matador said, meeting her eyes with hers. "What you did with your time here is your business, but I suggest you tell your boyfriend to keep his tongue in check. It's bad for business, and I am certain you don't want a reputation if you ever come back to Crescent City. To him, I am an obstacle between you two."

The anger that swept through her was lightening fast and white hot. With one quick movement, she yanked the pendant from her neck and threw it onto the workbench as she glared daggers at Matador since he was the only victim within her range to take the blow from the incredible hatred and betrayal she felt towards Mecca. She had thought.... well it didn't matter what she had thought. Apparently she had gotten it all wrong and she had been played the fool.
"I want to go home Matty. I want to go home right now," she said in a low voice as rage mixed with hurt washed across her eyes.

"Well, you room and things are untouched back in Cescent City. You are welcome back when you are ready," Matador said, feeling better about his confrontation with Mecca the night before. There was no stretching of the truth, merely statement of the facts, so neither Mecca no Covet could hold him responsible. He was certain Covet would have rather heard it from Matador than some jealous regular at Veronica.
Seeing the trinket skitter across the table, he wondered how Mecca would react to be in the same situation with Covet. Coming home to an empty shop without a trace or reason.
"I think you need to talk to Mecca first," Matador said, walking over and pulling her into a tight hug. Using a softer voice, he stroked her hair and continued. "You know I never liked him, but he at least deserves an explanation of your decision to return. I want you to come back to Veronica only if you are sure and you promise that its not because you want to runaway again. You need to face your problems, not hide from them."

Talk to him? She wasn't sure she would be doing much talking, she thought darkly as she buried her face into his shoulder and wrapped her arms around him. At his final words, she pulled away so she could look up into his eyes.
"If you cared anything about me, you would take me home right this moment Matty. You know how he is and I know what my anger will do to him. Besides... the scum doesn't deserve to know a damn thing about me. He played me for a fool and I won't be played a moment longer," she said in the same low, angry voice. She hated him so much and knew that if she were forced to speak with him, things would not end well for her.

"In that case, gather your things," Matador said, stroking her hair gently, moreso when she held on tightly. "The sooner we leave, the better. I have a friend at the port whose offered to take us back to Crescent City."
He pulled her close again, hugging her tightly again. A satisfied smile swept his face, but thankfully from this angle, Covet certainly couldn't see it. Looking at the clock on the wall, they would need to hurry if they were to catch Saltee and her crew before they left on the afternoon tide. "Let's go."

Covet returned his hug, trying her best to dispell the strange feelings within her. She had never hated anyone before, but she knew without a doubt that that was what she felt. She had thought that maybe he had cared for her, but god she had been so wrong. Without another word, she pulled away from Matador and walked up the stairs to gather what few things were hers. In a matter of minutes she had returned and she slipped her hand into Matador's. "I'm ready," she said softly, willing herself not to look around the place that had started to feel like home to her.

"Then let's move," Matador said, slipping his jacket back on. He was suprised how quickly she started whistling a new tune. Then again, had he been in Covet's place he'd feel the same thing. When she took his hand, Matador looked at her and smiled apologetically. "I don't know the people of this town, and I am certain that many of them are acquaintances of Mecca's." He squeezed her hand tightly, but let go. "We need to keep a low profile. I want to get out of this city alive."
Opening the door, they exited. Taking the side streets that Saltee mapped out for them, Matador and Covet quickly found themselves at the dock of a fanastic watercraft, The Hurricane Baroness. Matador gave a wave to the Captain, who waved with a bemused smile.
"Covet, may I present you, Captain Saltee Dawg," Matador smirked, pointing to the busty female pirate and standing amongst her crew. "She's insane, but her heart's in the right place." The crew cackled and parted for Matador and Covet, leading straight to the galley. The journey home would be a short one, but there was a crew that needed feeding and entertaining. Handing Covet an apron, Matador smiled. "Let's get to work."

~~~~~~ Mecca watched the orange flames lick what was left of Taliesin, a twisted grin frimly on his face as the poor excuse for a fire service attempted to put it out.
he had been content before she had shown up. His own business, a home. When she came to him he thought that she maybe would want to be part of that.
How wrong he had been.
This is what happened when you let your guard down, people walked in and destroyed everything. All untill they got what they really wanted.
He gave a snort of laughter, not anymore.
Turning away from the shouts and billowing smoke he headed down the nearest alley and towards the message station. Posting the envelope he held in his hands he stared at the red door and took a breath. Taliesin was nothing he couldn't build elsewhere. Far away from this place. Swinging his bag on his shoulder he headed off in search of the only thing that made him feel at ease. The airships. Mecca's letter Covet, This pendant is yours. Keep it or sell it, whatever you wish. It is all that is left now. I am glad that you got what you wanted and I hope you are happy. Mecca
