I was 12 when I learned of them. At first I thought is was just some kind of biography or a story on a kids' imagination or something so i didn't care. Then someone told me it was about witches and wizards and I was like "Gimme Gimme!" I'm 18 now.

I was 7. My mom was reading the first book to my sister and I sat in and fell in love with the book. I started reading them myself when I was 8. I remember getting the 4th book for my 9th birthday.

It was in 2000, when I was 13. I was working through what I thought of as the more "serious" (ie. better) fantasy series, "The Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan. The insanity of the midnight release of book four and the news of a movie drew me to the series. I worked my way through all four books in two weeks, later turned seeing the first two movies into a Thanksgiving Day activity, went to the midnight release of book five, read it in under eight hours, spent my first semester of university discussing it with my lit class, saw PoA twice (once, in IMAX) it's premiere weekend, nearly cried because I could not attend the midnight release of book six, finally bought it, read it frantically, became fixated on Severus Snape and Harry Potter (in that combination and all permutations there of), and some six years into my obsession, I breathlessly await the release of the fifth movie.

I was 11 when I first discovered Harry Potter. My mom bought me the first book and I sat it down on my bookshelf. It pretty much just gathered dust for about a year. When I was 12, I needed something to read for a school assignment and that was probably the only book on my bookshelf that I hadn't read. I picked it up and started reading it .. and from that point on, I was hooked. I bought the next three books as soon as they came out and didn't put them down until I was done with them. I liked reading in the first place, but after I started reading HP, I spent all my free time either reading the books again or analyzing them. I'm 4 years into Harry Potter and I'm def. not giving up my obsession now. My friends and I were first in line for the fourth movie, and we plan on being first in line for the next one.

I also feel old answering this question. I believe I was a freshman in high school, but I know I read the first few books before the 1st movie came out.

I was in grade six. That would make me twelve. Back then I had heard about Harry Potter but was rather against it. Now after I saw the first movie I fell in love with it.
Ps. I think the books are better.

I knew about it since I was about 13 or 14, but I never read it until I was... maybe 16? I had entirely shunned the series and just wrote it off as something "trendy the kids are into" before I actually sat my arse down and read it.

I was eight when I first tried to the read Harry Potter. I read it because I had heard that it was a good book from all my friends. I couldn't get it at first. I was mixing scenes up. I thought they met Quirrell on the train. Anyway I gave up. When I was ten I tried again and fell in love with it.
