The definition of homework is 'Homework is the time students spend outside the classroom in assigned activities to practice, reinforce or apply newly-acquired skills and knowledge and to learn necessary skills of independent study.' ( http://www.nwrel.org/scpd/sirs/1/cu1.html ) There are so many ways that people view whether homework is necessary or not. Different pros and cons that they bring up trying to prove their side. Very few, though, can hold a strong argument as to why homwork is so important or not. There are few, to no studies proving if its needed in a school enviornment for learning. ( http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6397407.html ) Its even rare for a student to be asked of their opinion on the matter.

One schools students designed a few questions of their own to learn the opinion of their classmates, confidnentially, about homework. They asked "why do you think students don't complete homework?" and students were allowed to mark more than one response. 23 students belived it was because the students wern't given enough time to complete the assignment, 36 answered 'to lazy', 52 answered 'don't care' the rest answered either, they are not able to do the work because of a learning problem, its to hard for them, no one will or can help them or other reasons. A total of 143 students answered this survey. Another question asked was "How often do you do your homework" Only 82 answered this question compared to the 143 who answered the other. 43 said always, 33 answered most of the time, 4 'about half the time' another 4 'seldom or sometimes' and 2 answered 'never'. ( http://www.ems.psu.edu/HAMS/surveys/homework.html ) These questions were asked to a 6th grade class.

The SIRS (School Improvment Research Series) has even got a article posted online about homework. In this article they say that homework in elementary should rarely or even never be given. Elementary is a place where study habits and learning skills. All this stated clearly and still 6th graders are spending a average of 30-60 muinites a day on homework. ( http://www.ems.psu.edu/HAMS/surveys/homework.html ) SIRS also has written that teachers should NEVER give homework as a punishment and not to use "no homework" as a reward. ( http://www.nwrel.org/scpd/sirs/1/cu1.html Classroom Teachers ) Just today in two of my classes we were threatened to quiet down or else we would be given homework. When I asked a fellow student, Brandin Hisaw, if homework was needed he said yes and answered "I want to get a good grade and show that I can handle the work I am given." When I asked my cousin Maggie Wood if she thought homework was needed she answered "yes... it gives teachers something to do, and to b***h about doing, outside of school." SIRS also has posted on their webpage "Be useful to teachers for monitoring student progress and diagnosing student learning problems." Which I find extremly true. The one problem with that is these experiments on finding learning problems also effects the students grade becuse homework is such a high percentage in some classes.

"I always thought that I hated school, but really I enjoy it , but its just the fact that after I have been at school from 9 to 4 I have to come home and do around 2 hours homework, every night." Says Ryan D. ( http://www.quazen.com/Kids-and-Teens/School-Time/Is-homework-necessary.13449 ) I've found by experience even that this is the case for a lot of kids including myself in the past. There are classes I dread this year because of homework and classes I am afraid to take next year because of my classmates warning me about how long they spend on homework a night from these classes. There are no doubts in my mind that homework can be extremly helpful in a students path to learning, but its all in the way it is presented and what kind of work is given. "Practice is necessary to master any concept you are learning. Whether this practice should be during the school day or after school is debatable, but there's no question that some practice is needed." (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070326104830AAVYvWb )

Personally when I was first preseanted with this topic, spent a good hour that night sitting in front of my heater to keep warm ranting about my own feelings about homework. Since then, the research i've done has changed my opinion on it slightly. When I first started without any outside knowledge or opinions, I belived whoever created homework should be hunted down and shot. Slightly ignorant thought, on my part, I must say. Now after reading some articles on pros and cons I see that homework can be useful if the material given is benificial to the material in class. Math is the most understandable class for homework, closely followed by english. What I don't belive in for homework is it being used as a punishment, an average of a hour and a half a night throughout the week is to much. Students who have after school jobs cannot handle a hour and a half a night without losing needed sleep. Also, the strict 'if its late I will not accept it' policy I do not exactly agree with. Though a week late or so I understand the teacher not wanting to take the assignment. But if its next day or so a teacher should at least give it partial credit. One system I agree with is the one Mr.Messing uses. If a student shirked the responsibility of homework for no good reason then the penalty of having to do the work before being given the possibliity of extra credit is extremly understandable. Some of the educators i've had in the past have great systems for giving and accepting homework, luckily i've had very balanced classes and have not been to swamped by work unless I shrug off it for the night before. I do not completly agree with homework but now I don't want to hunt down the creator of homework. I can see a little more from the schools and teachers perspective on the issue at hand.
