ksenya I thought Alternative, was basically music that was alternative to mainstream, such as indie, and then punk, metal, ska, emo, hardcore, etc. etc...but then what about jazz and classical and electronica and all those other genres? eek ya i kinda agree with that...cept to me..."indie" doesnt exist anymore since the indie bands we find always become big....

I would love this thread to bloom, so I'll try to provide a more solid definition of alternative music (or more specifically, alternative rock). As the first post mentioned, the genre was officially used to name the boom of underground bands that didn't quite fit in with mainstream genres. However it was eventually given a static definition as music which has been inspired by Punk Rock/Metal who decided to take a more progressive approach by inviting influences from Jazz, Reggae, Classical etc etc. Basically its alternative rock that is an alternative to Punk/Hardcore/Metal but still share some roots/similarities.
Examples include: The Cure (the later half of their career), The Pixies, Sonic Youth, The Replacements etc etc.

Anyone heard of The Fiery Furnaces or The Arcade Fire both of those are definately alternative then the ones I'm not quite sure about are Fiona Apple, Nellie Mckay, Joanna Newsom, and Jens Lekman. However Jens could easily be something else. He's rather mellow. Joanna is a cross between folk, syphony, and rock (weird). Nellie and Fiona fit more to alternative but could be Pop/rock.

I agree with the unclassifyable rock definition...it isn't usually as hard as metal (could also be termed hard rock as long as it is recent)...you still see the Chili peppers and janes addiction classified as alt rock for ex...a lot of stuff that sounds like emo-core to me seems to be classified as alt rock as well...hmmm  acc. to a book review on this site: www.xfm.co.uk/ Article.asp?id=5273 alt is anything that can be considered cutting edge (this book actually looks buy-worthy... heart heart idea )

Well, one thing I know for sure is that its supposed to be influenced by the punk/metal scene although it usually doesn't sound anything like those genres. Whenever I think of the genre alternative rock, the word 'experimental' comes in mind.

I'd normally classify Alternative with artists in the Indie and Soft Rock. For example, Coldplay, System of a Down, Keane, etc. 'Tis just my opinion though.

Hmmm... well Googly would probably explain this better but it would seem to me that alternative rock is simply the genre progressed from punk/hardcore (in terms of complexity). Stuff like Dinosaur Jr. and The Replacements (The Replacement's early albums were pretty much punk rock). Then you have others who simply interchange alternative with 'indie', i.e. anything that is different from the dominant mainstream sounds at the time.
