Burton would be an amazing Alice director.
If it was a movie of American McGee's Alice, the music from the game could stay. If it was from the books, I think Elfman would do a good job.

No iconic actors, though. That's where Charlie went wrong.

What's an iconic actor?

Someone like Johnny Depp. Not that he's not a great character actor, but he's got that "ZOMG it's Johnny Depp" vibe. And in Charlie, Tim Burton focused a little too much on Depp's part, like it was more a character movie than anything else. It would work if the character was Alice, but it focused more on Wonka than on Charlie in that movie.
I don't think Johnny's iconic. Iconic would be Jim Carrey or Will Smith. People who play themselves in every movie they're in. The focus was shifted a little too far toward Wonka but I happen to loath Freddy Highmore so I wasn't too upset about that.

Carrey was actually really good in Eternal Sunshine.
I think an elegant queen would be an interesting idea. It could also be used to kind of add to her "I'm acting like I'm better than you" vibe.

Jim Carrey was excellent in Eternal Sunshine. I think if the movie was made in a few years when he's a bit older and if he toned down the cartoonish element to his performence he could make a good Mad Hatter. Only could though. And I mean, if it had to be some big name star in the movie, I'd rather it be him than.. J-Lo or something.

If it was the Hatter, he'd overplay the role and make it comical. I'd sorta like to see a more serious Hatter who was just trying to preserve order according to his own perceptions than someone who was random for randomness' sake.

As long as Paris Hilton doesn't show up. I don't llike her.

This is a dangerous discussion. There are so many great actors that would nevertheless ruin the entire movie by being in it. v.v

I nominate Tim Curry as Mad Hatter!

I think that he'd be able to easily pull off the Mad Hatter as he appears in the book. I'm going through every actor I know, and I can't think of anyone better.

Also, my sister suggested Gina Mckee for Queen of Hearts, based on the fact that she already did a similar role and pulled it off really well.

I never really pictured the Queen of Hearts the way they have her in the Disney movie, so I'm not even searching for fat old angry women. xp

Hm, how about Minnie Driver for the Queen of Hearts? Gah, there are too many to consider!

I envisioned Barbara Streisand as the Duchess just after I read that. sweatdrop

Hm, think Bette Midler would be any good? xp

EDIT: Goldie Hawn might actually be good as the Duchess... Her face looks like it could fall into the proper expressions without trouble, at least.

I nominate Goldie Hawn as Duchess! blaugh

I nominate myself for the role of the Duchess!

If I grew a mustache out, I'd probably make a rather impressive Duchess. 3nodding

May I be the White Rabbit? Or something else, if you think I'm better-suited.

Awww.. It's been my life's goal to play the white rabbit in some way shape or form. That's why I dress up like him now and then.

But I'd settle for the chechire cat, the doormouse or any number of the other excellent characters.

It's true though, that this subject is pretty touchy. After all, everybody interprets the book slightly differently. No?

The Mock Turtle, perhaps? xd

@sugar: Yeah, that is true. I mean, we all know what the differences in the movie will be if we have, say, Mel Brooks direct, versus, for example, Tim Burton directing. That's a rather drastic example, but still...
