[ 2. ]Taro Hirohito T he shower definatly had him feeling better... well sort of. While it had taken away that layer of grit he felt he'd developed from so many plane changes and brushing up against strangers, he seemed to have developed something of a queasy stomach. He put it to the gross lasagna he'd eaten on the second to last airplane and set off trecking through the darkening forest-jungle.
All traces of weariness evapourated in company with the dark trees and whatever lay beyond. Strange sounds, ones he'd only ever really expect to hear in a zoo or a movie. With a shiver he picked up his pace. Before he'd left he'd pulled out his little traveller's book translator and located number 46.
He soon found it and trecked up the staircase. Reaching the top he check the numbers once more before shrugging and giving the door a sturdy knock.Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi had been getting ready for bed, in the process of brushing her hair she paused when a knock echoed from her door. As she set the brush down and started for her door her first thought was Thomas, coming to get her to watch thsoe football video's of his. However, it seemed a bit late for that... Perhaps Newton asking for another bug hunt...? That seemed reasonable. Either way, Thom or Newt, they had both seen her in her pajamas... Thom knew of the pregnancy, and Newt just plain seemed to not notice. So the thought of pausing to grab her handy sweater slipped her mind as she cracked open the door, eager to greet either Thom or newt.
What she found wasn't even close. Her smile seemed to fall off her face and shatter on the ground below, her eyes went wide, her heart pounded. She knew exactly who it was. But.. why would he be here? Oh God.. Her tail, her scales, he'd see. Sure everyone else here had seen them but this was drastically different. This was.. Taro. He can't see. He just couldn't see the scales or her stomach... and before she could get a clear thought in her head, she was slamming the door as hard as she could shut, shakily trying to lock it as soon as she had got it shut. Taro Hirohito T aro's heart felt like it had stopped just as Natsumi's was speeding up. Natsumi! It was Natsumi but why was she doing Peace Corps? She was so much better than that, she was supposed to be going to college! "N-Natsumi?!"
And then the dark colouration on her forehead registered. His voice took on a whole new tone and he immediatly reached out as she slammed the door shut, pushing futily against the wood. What had that been? That looked suspiciously like a dark bruise. What was going on?
"Natsumi! Why are you here? What's on your forehead?" He leaned his shoulder against the door and turned the knob, pushing it open. He could feel her pushing her weight against it as well and did his best to be gentle. He got his arm and shoulder in through the door and leaned his head in. "Natsumi, it's me, Taro. What happened? Why are you here?"
He gave it another gentle push and managed to wedge himself further in. His eye caught something as he glanced around the room in an attempt to get an idea of the surroundings and he paused, coming back to it. Her feet looked... looked...
"Natsumi?"Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi gritted her teeth as the door was opening back up. She had to stop it... Stop. Her mind screaemed as she tried to force her weight against the door, sure she was heavier by a good bit due to her pregnancy.. but it wasn't enough. She felt her feet slide against the floor as he worked his way in. "Iie!" she shouted, rather desperatly.
She slid a bit more, deciding fighting that was pointless she turned tail, litterally, and ran towards the safety of her bathroom. She could hide there. Normally she was more careful about her movements being above Thom, but right now it was fight of flight mode taking over her slightly repteillian body. And it had chosen the flight option. "Stay out!" she managed to shout back before dissapereing into her bathroom. "Why are you here?" her voice was unreasonably loud, a mixture of panic, confusion, sadness, and anger. Quite a combo for the usually withdrawn girl. Taro Hirohito W as she that upset with him? She finally backed away from the door, allowing him to enter fully now. As he steadied himself he watched her retreat to another room something... what...
His eyebrows furrowed. What had that been? He followed after her in long strides, clomping over the floor loudly. He lodged his foot in the door and looked it at Natsumi, trying to peer around her at her a**. "Natsumi! I'm sorry if you're upset about me leaving. I had to! Please understand.. I'm sorry. What..... what is that?" His brows furrowed as he reached forward to try and take a hold of her. He caught glimpses of something brownish behind her, the same thing he'd seen earlier.
Through his distraction he kept trying to persue the topic. "Why are you at Peace Corps anyway?"Natsumi Tanaka "Go away!" Crap. She mentally cursed his foot that has kept her from shutting the next door. No where else to go now... She was cornered. Which made her heart rate seem to go crazy. The breif thought to dig occured, which was immediatly dismissed as insane, and impossible on the bathroom floor. She let out a yelp when he saw her tail, reachgin behind her to grab it and hide it, momentarily forgetting about actually holding the door... which only lead to it being flung open into her from the abrupt change in pressures. It wasn't hard, afterall Taro had been holding back so as not to harm her, but it was enough to shock her and send her slipping on her slightly wet (from an earlier shower) and fall on her rear with a loud thud.
"It's.. nothing. Go away...." she repeated, much softer and more pitiful this time. Her eyes filling with tears... He wasn't supposed to be here. She was supposed to be moving on... Now her head was flooding with all the things she had tried to hard not to think about. Why had he left her like that? And why did she have to be changing into a whatever... "You're not supposed to be here, you're not, you're supposed to be in Japan...." She wasn't sure what he meant by her being at peace corps, but her head was spinning too much to think about it. Taro Hirohito " Natsumi." His voice was almost scolding as she slipped and fell onto the floor. He stood in the doorway looking down at her, leaning forward to look over her shoulder. She was holding something behind her back.
"Yes.. yes I am supposed to be here. You're supposed to be in Japan." He was growing a little frustraited... but then.. well he had left her high and dry. His voice softened a little and he tried to look into her face. "I came to Peace Corps so I could get into a college. I'm sorry I left but I was a failure! I didn't.. want you to see.....what.."
His face screwed up into an expression of curious horror. She wasn't holding something behind her back, she was holding something attatched to her back. Distantly he registered that his head was throbbing and he felt a bit hot - once again throwing it off as just the over exertion of seeing Natsumi again so soon and pushing through a few doors.
"What the hell..?" He moved closer, reaching down put a hand lightly on top of her head as he tried to lean further over her to see the growth. "Are you cosplaying? Is that a tail?" He couldn't see the strap that might be holding it behind her back, so maybe she'd glued a fake tail on?
Why on earth would she do something like that?Thomas Brinley Thom hadn't been home long himself, having spent the better part of the day out and about on the beach. He had returned to his duplex only a short while before and, deciding it was too late to drag Natsumi down for the Cup, settled for digging a book of crossword puzzles out of his still-packed suitcase and flopped across the bed to work on one. Sadly, he'd managed only a few words before he heard the door slam upstairs, briefly losing interest in the puzzle. He quirked a brow, eyes flitting towards the ceiling, but remained where he was, simply listening. That is, until the unmistakable babble of voices led to a thud from another area of the floor. Dropping the puzzle book, he slid off the bed and, still barefoot, hurried outside and up the stairs. Natsumi's door had been left slightly open, and without hesitation he let himself inside. From there, the source of the commotion was easily found in the small duplex. He hurried over to the bathroom, stepping in and and uncerimoniously catching Taro's shoulder to pull him out of the way. "Natsumi? What's goin' on up 'ere?" Natsumi Tanaka Her mind fuzzed in a skew of emotions, sorry? SORRY? He was SORRY? The wheel of emotions decided to come to a stop on anger. He was lying... He had to be. He didn't think he'd see her here anyways... This was all a big lie, just like before had been. She frowned at him, only getting more and more frustrated with the whole situation. Her heart was still racing, he was here.. not leaving no matter how many times she told him to, and lyng to her, atleast that's what she wanted to beleive now. Because if he wasn't... Then they could both be back home, away from this damned island. Oh god was he going to be trapped here to wasn't he?
Hormone swings weren't helping at all as she tried to find words to say... Not getting anything good things seemed to spew out like a backed up public torlet. "Cosplaying?!" was the first stumbled thing out of her mouth "No. I'm turning into a freak! And .. I said.. get OUT." her eyes welled with more tears as she helplessly tried to shove him away, only to find him moving...
Thomas... she looked rather pathetic, frowning, teary eyed, along with her face starting to red from the over excitment. She was already feeling dizzy... She just prayed she wouldn't faint, but if she did atleast she was on the ground. Swallowing hard, "Taro..." she pointed, trying to regain composure and failing. Composure was important... Never getting mad, always being faithful and forgiving. She certiantly was shattering the things her mother had told her... Then agian, her mother never had liked Taro. "H..He... is..." She tried to think agian, only landing on one word that caused her voice to go into a highpitched squeak. "The father.." She vaugly knew Taro wouldn't understand her english... but, part of her hoped he would. Taro Hirohito T aro gave a grunt as someone grabbed his shoulder and shoved him aside. He blinked, a vauge expression of surprise and confusion as this guy talked in english and Natsumi talked back.
"Huh? What? Natsumi, who is this guy?" Taro began looking the strange man over... what was with the tattoos... or maybe it was a skin condition.. it looked like either. "What are you saying?"
Emotions were high, really all he could focus on was that Natsumi was here for whatever reason and she was angry, really angry. He had been trying to explain himself but then this guy had come in. Taro shoved the stranger back in retaliaton to the earlier push and stepped further into the bathroom, moving to kneel down beside Natsumi.
He noticed something else with the quirk of an eyebrow. "Your getting kinda fat. What happened to Gymnastics?" He reached down to playfully poke her belly. He used to get her to forgive him before by making her cheer up and laugh, why not try the same method now?
He clenched his muscles slightly as his headache progressivly began to get worse. His stomach felt unsteady, it was all nerves though from seeing Natsumi again. It had to be.Thomas Brinley Crying... She had been crying, or close to it. The poor girl looked utterly miserable, not to mention rather ill, and her difficulty in speaking when she began only emphasized this point. Her voice rose in pitch over a clear bout of nerves, but still he managed to make out her final words. He blinked. ...Well, wasn't this awkward. Though, she didn't seem particularly pleased to see the father of her child...at all... But he wasn't quite sure if that was because Natsumi genuinely didn't like the guy, or simply because she was sorry to see him in the same situation as herself. And then he was shoved out of the way, and Thom quickly decided on the former. He frowned, glowering after Taro, expression darkening moreso when the man bent to poke at Natsumi's stomach. He hadn't the faintest idea what the Japanese man was saying, but somehow he was quite sure the actuion wouldn't please Natsumi. Stepping forward once more, he hoisted Taro up from the floor by the back of his collar, forcibly turning and steering him out of the small bathroom. He sent the other man away from himself with a shove, waving him towards the door. "I seriously doubt Natsumi appreciates you interruptin' her evenin'. You can speak t' her once she's feelin' better. Out." Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi stared at Taro tried to return to her, expression wavering before he spoke. She looked shocked, was he kidding? Calling her fat at a time like this...? It seemed to be the last straw in the jumble of emotions, the dam broke,She wasn't fat was she? She had scales a tail, webbed feet and now she was fat to add onto that? "Fat?!" She whined out in english, it having been the last thing she spoke in she was prone to get caught in one or the other when she wasn't thinking about it. The baby kicked in responce to the man's poke, which only seemed to break her heart more. She placed a hand over the spot where the kick had come from... The baby... The baby's father. He was right here... She could tell him. She could tell him what she had tried so many times before she left to tell him.
Then he was leaving, with the aid of Thom, as she followed the motions a few tears made their way out of her eyes and down her face, which she quickly whiped at with her hand. She tried to curl her knees up to hide her stomach, "I'm not fat...." she muttered hald heartedly, as if trying to convince herself too. It was too much, Taro's opinion of her looks had mattered to her.. and here she was, fat and mutated. she quickly burried her face into her knees, covering one foot with the other to try and atleast hide one. She wanted him gone more than anything right now... and at the same time, didn't, the other side wanted to tell him to stay and accept the fact he was sorry. Live happilly ever after... That thought was shoved aside by his earlier words. Fat... That was it, he needed to leave no matter how she felt. She needed to think. "Thomas-kun said to get out..." After what seemed to be an eon for her, she translated, muffled by a tear-choked voice and her own pants. Taro Hirohito O ops, he'd said the wrong thing... He was about to fix it when that guy.. what Thomas? Whatever that guy was shoving him out again. "Thomas-kun? ...What is this guy to you, Natsumi?" A thought iced through his insides. No.. not she wouldn't.
But he had just left. The thought niggled at the back of his mind but was quickly crushed. He'd left for a good reason, she couldn't have gone to college and waited for him to send a letter?! He was going to send a post card from this damn Peace Corps and here she was with some other guy.
"Hey." He headed back again, this time coaxed by an entirely different emotion. "********." His english swear words were alright, at least. He grabbed onto Thom's shirt and pulled him back out of the bathroom, wrestling with him for a moment before shoving him back against a wall. He drew back and lay a solid sucker punch to the side of Thomas' face. "Why do I have to leave and not him? He's the stranger!"Thomas Brinley And now, behind him, Natsumi was crying, and the stupid b*****d was coming back, and what the hell had happened to his quiet evening? He sneered, catching Taro's wrist as the younger man made to tug him from the doorway, and then--had the bloody b*****d just punched him?! There had been absolutely no cause for that whatsoever. It was clear Natsumi didn't want to talk to the boy, he'd might as well leave. But fine, if he wanted to go back to high school... Thom shifted his jaw slightly, checking to be sure it had sustained no real damage, then abruptly reversed their positions. Taro was strong, yes, but so was Thom, and he had a good six inches on the younger man. Without further ado, Thom planted a fist in his stomach, adding, for good measure, a knee to his groin. But as he raised his fist a second time, an odd tingling ran along the back of his neck. A short shock later, and he crumpled to the floor, out cold. Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi kept her head down. What to do.. what to do?! She couldn't think... That faint feeling was getting stronger the more she tried to figure out what to do... Fight it... Fight it. His voice struck a nerve when she inquired about Thom... What she couldn't have friends? He had left her for pete's sake! High and dry to take care of a baby on her own...
Cussing and a sound caught her attention, she snapped her head up from it's position in her knees. "Don't!" she squeaked out when Taro punched one of her closest friends. That moment settled her mind, atleast for the time being. She had asked Taro a dozen times to leave... and he had simply ignored every word from her mouth. And here Thom was, rushing to her defence... Just like he had promised her. She tried to get to her feet, staggering and grasping hold of the counter to regain the blanace she had lost. So dizzy... "How many times do I have to tell you to leave?! Get out. Now. You're being stupid..!" Okay so she wasn't the best at insults, but the feelings were there none the less.
Then the rest seemed to happen before she could blink, Thom retaliated, then fell to the ground, she had no idea about the buzzers, and simply assumed Taro's punch to the face had managed to do something afterall. "Thomas-kun!" she ran to him first, kneeling and trying to straighten him from the awkward position he had fallen to, then get him onto his back so he wouldn't somehow die on her floor. Taro Hirohito T he first blow was almost enough to set him off, it made his stomach recoile and his chest heave in pain, but it was the second hit that really did it. As Thom crumpled to the ground Taro vaugly realized that Natsumi was running to him.. He managed to stagger forward a step or two toward the bathroom before promptly going down himself. The nausia took over completely and he retched onto Natsumi's floor, trying to cover his mouth to prevent it, obviously to no avail.
He managed to stay upright until he was left dry heaving. He leaned on his clean hand and promptly fell onto his side, curling up in a ball of throbbing pain. Those two punches felt like they'd set off his enitre body. His stomach ached, he felt hot, shakey, nauseious and to add to it he'd been kneed in the ******** BALLS.
He managed not to cry - Thom had landed a good solid blow - but was for the moment very incapacitated on the floor, curled into a ball on his side, half laying in his own sick.
The world felt like it was tipping.Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi's attention was more than caught by the sound of Taro's little episode on her floor. It immediatly offended all of her senses, turning her own stomach but not enough to cause any loss... yet. She swallowed hard, her initial feelings of 'ew' quickly turning into concern for the other dieing man in her room. She tried to whipe at her face, the tears blurring her vision weren't helping at all. They kept coming as her heart broke all over again.
Nausia... He had his injection. He was going to be like the rest of them soon... She couldn't help but feel bad for the pathetic lump on her floor. But what would he be? And for another moment, the image he had held back home was dissolving. He was laying on the floor, going to turn into God knows what... And he didn't know any english. That hardly stopped her from being mad at him, but a spark of pity was there. Ofcourse her mind reminded her just why she was there too, already turning into God knows what and pregnant.
She frowned again, looking over Thom once more with some concern then standing... she wavered, finding she was still lightheaded. She let out a tiny choked sob, "If... You just leave... Then I'll help you later, okay? I don't want to see you right now.." She gave a tiny hiccup, moving a hand to her stomach when said hiccup made the baby give a kick. Only making her eyes fill woth more tears. Taro Hirohito T aro's eyes opened slightly when he heard Natsumi speaking. He was speant.. done. She had gone to that Thomas' side and was ordering him out for the thousandth time. Taro wheezed and lay still on her floor for a minute or two more until he decided he could move.
He got to his feet heavily, pausing to look down at Natsumi's floor and at himself... he was disgusting... He looked back toward Natsumi, his own heart beginning to ache. All this for nothing. She'd moved on. He dejectedly turned and stumbled out the door without a further word. Down the stairs and back through the night path toward his duplex him.
The night sounds didn't even make him nervous this time. When he reached his room he simply went into the bathroom and lay down on the floor. He was hurt, and he was tired. He fell asleep curled up beside his toilet.

The sky had just begun turnin a rather painful shade of gray and burnt orange when he opened his eyes again. A wave of nausea caused him to nearly be sick again, but he managed to quell it. Taro's head felt fuzzy and heavy, he vaugly registered that he had a fever. The subject that stood out most in his mind was Natsumi.
Natsumi... she was here. He wasn't exactuly sure why, but she was, and... he balled his hands into fists, closing his eyes tightly and gritting his teeth. Who had that guy been? Her new boyfriend? It sure seemed that way, she'd rushed immediatly to his side as soon as Taro had taken him down.
What happened... what happened to the girl who had said he was good once? The cute little shrine maiden he had dated... fallen in love with back home? She'd abandoned him in the mere blink of an eye. Had she even gotten his letter? Well.. maybe not, he was sure her brothers or father would have intercepted something like that, they certainly had no love for him.
His heart throbbed. He'd been so happy to see her again. He couldn't think of why SHE had any right to be angry with him. Maybe for having gone for just a little while, but it had only been a short while!
He gave a loud, inarticulate groan of frustraition, reaching up to curl his fingers in his hair. He was going in circles over and over again. No matter what he thought of the same questions and replies were brought up, and always that underlaying hurt.
Taro forced himself to his feet, discarding his clothing and tossing them haphazardly on the floor. They were covered in his own sick from earlier (come to think of it his stomach was still pretty sore) and ruined for all he was concerned. Maybe there would be a place to for him to wash his clothing somewhere. He got into a shower and stood beneath the heavy, hot water for a good few hours before washing himself off and heading unceremoniously to the medium sized bed.
He dreamt about meeting Natsumi in a desert and giving her a flower.

[ 4. ]Taro Hirohito J et lag had forced Taro to sleep most of the day away, that and the fever. He still reeked of vomit from the night before despite the shower he'd taken after waking up sometime near dawn, and had taken yet another when he woke up again at evening.
He now paced restlessly across his unfamiliar Duplex floor wearing a new set of clothes, switching from furious to hurt to confused. He had a good many questions to ask her, but she didn't want to see him - which was all for the better because he definatly didn't want to see her right now. But WHY was she here? It didn't make much sense at all, she had good things going for her.
"Probably came to be with that guy." He growled, clenching his fists. With a grunt of anger he reached for the door and jerked it open, stepping out into humid air. It was daylight, and now that he had the chance he could look at his surroundings.
He vaugly registered that the setup was pretty impressive. A bit peculiar, but he'd never been in the Peace Corps before so all he knew this could be a regular set up. There was a large building in the center of the wheel of cookie-cutter buildings... he needed something to do to occupy his mind.
Stepping off of his front step he began walking through the grass towards it.Zachary Bloodstone Early evening looked the same as any other part of the day to Zach. Each day blended with the last in its unchanging scenery and routine. He didn't dare call it boring - that time Aubrey had been attacked had been enough trouble. His left arm still felt like a glove, and that wasn't really a part of him. It swung by his side. His tail trailed behind him on the ground. He was headed in the general direction of the entertainment room to get a book that could take his mind off the question that had been nagging him silently each time he'd seen an islander who'd changed. How much longer did he have before the next time? He was so lost in thought that he practically ran into the back of the other guy. It was his chance to make a quick five-second surveillance. They looked awfully human from the back... no tail, and nothing sticking out of their head. Not good. Were they new? They had to be. There was only one way to find out if they knew what was going on around here. He cleared his throat a little, speeding up to walk alongside the man's left and tapped a clawed finger lightly on their shoulder to get their attention. Time to get blunt. "New here?" Taro Hirohito H e didn't get far before he sensed the presence of someone else behind him, and then beside. Something rather prickly touched his shoulder and he turned to see what was there.
As soon as he turned he was jumping backward. English was spewing out of this... this.. things mouth. He got the impression of teeth, red, deformities, and horns... long, slender curled hornes. Heart beat shot upward, adrenalie flooded, pupils dilated in reaction.
Taro screamed, falling back. He scrabbled around on the grass for a moment, rolling over onto his belly. He was suddenly filled with the desperate urge to piss as he struggled to his feet, stumbled, and bolted in the opposite direction.
"ONI DA! TASUKE TE! TASUKE TE!" He was screaming at the top of his lungs in utter fear.Zachary Bloodstone Zach held up both hands defensively at the screaming and swore. There was his answer. Any annoyance he had for the rude reaction was drowned out by confusion. How was he supposed to deal with this guy? All the furry islanders must have had less problems with the new people, at least most of them didn't look scary. "Wait! Stop!" He reached out to grab the man's jacket before he could run away, momentarily forgetting about the kind of grip he'd have on it. The claws hooked straight through the material. Zach would have to slow the guy down or be dragged along by his hand. And was guy speaking Chinese? He tried to dig his feet into the dirt and grass. "Don't run!" Taro Hirohito H e met resistance, this caused him to panic even more. More unintelligable english, but he didn't really care about trying to think of what it ment or even wishing he could understand. Taro began to thrash violently, leaning forward as hard as he could as he struggled out of his jacket. He got one arm lose but the other caught on his wrist, forcing him to whip around and face the thing so he could struggle fere. He could feel the fabric tearing at the back.
"Get away! Don't hurt me!" He closed his eyes and gave another hard pull at his captured arm, finally tearing it free. He teetered back slightly and turned to flee once more. He was breathing rather raggedly by now despite not really struggling or running that far. "Help!" He was so desperate that his poor attempt at english didn't come out very intelligible, though.Zachary Bloodstone Zach had to follow after the unintelligible man, continuing to holler at him to stop running. It wasn't until the guy had wriggled free of his jacket that Zach could slow down and assess things better without wasting his breath. Panting, he looked down at the hand caught by the jacket and back at the guy. More shouting? The concensus showed that he looked even scarier to most others than he'd thought. None of his fleeting thoughts could provide him with a way to calm this man down, except to back off. Well, it was worth a shot. After unhooking his fingers from the fabric, he set the jacket down lightly on the ground and took a few steps back. He couldn't help grimacing, causing his frills to flare up defensively. His tail was curling in a small loop on the ground. He had to rely on the hope that this man knew some English. "Stop yelling. Please..." Maybe the man would get what he was saying based on the tone rather than the words. He didn't know any Chinese. Why had the doctors decided to bring someone at such a distinct disadvantage when it came to understanding the situation? This was absurd. The other man had to be doubly terrified. "Do you speak English?" Taro Hirohito A fter a few steps he crained his head back over his shoulder instinctivly, he didn't HEAR the thing coming after him so he had to be sure. But no, it was just standing there looking... confused? It was bizarre seeing facial expression on something like this.
Taro let his momentum carry him a few steps further before stopping and turning around - if this was a real oni then he didn't want to keep his back turned to it. He heard things he didn't understand and then one word... English.
English. Yes, english, this thing was speaking english. Maybe not an Oni.. but then WHAT? The devil? Did that exist?
Taro stood staring at the being before him, oggling the tail that moved at what looked to be free will behind him. He was vaugly reminded of Natsumi last night. Oh...
Oh... whoa, hey. Taro squinted at the thing.. yeah he definatly could be a man. A nervous smile broke out across his face. "That is a really good costume." He paused, remembering that the man hadn't spoken japanese. He patted his pockets for a second until he found the pocket translator, pulling it out and typing in a message.
"Splendid design. Actually it made afraid me." He laboured hard and slow over the pronunciation of his message, looking up half-wary, half-expectant at the other.Zachary Bloodstone Zach blinked at the sentence of foreign language and the other guy's sudden change of demeanor. It was probably not a good thing, but at least he wasn't shrieking any more. What little English was spoken at first seemed completely unrelated to the past minute. He scratched his head. "Design? What are you- oh! Oh, great..." He held up his left arm and pointed at it with his right hand. "You... you think this is fake." He tried to grit his teeth together but all the sharp points wouldn't allow it. He couldn't forget he'd thought the same thing when he was first introduced to the island's rather important secret. A thought occured to him. If he just nodded and smiled, he wouldn't have to be the one to deal with this. In a month this guy would be as much an animal as everyone else, and that would be the end of the debate as far as this new guy was concerned. There was no case for morality in this place anyhow. "Er... yes. This is a costume. Costume," he repeated again, making sure the word was clearly spoken. Maybe that gadget the man had would be good for would translate what was said back into Chinese. Taro Hirohito T aro looked blankly at the other man as he lifted the particularily cool looking arm and pointed to it. Now that he was a little more calm he could look over this guy's costume. It was pretty neat, very realistic. But why were people at Peace Corps wearing costume? Was it some kind of weird tradition? A ritual? It looked more like professional movie makeup to him.
He gave a wan smile. s**t.. this guy had seen him screaming. Taro bolstered his courage and walked non-chalantly over to him, all smiles and chuckles. "Nice acting on my part, huh?" Oh wait...
...Tap tap tap type...
"Ano...I am the good actor, ne?" He gave another grin, yes, this was smooth. Language barriors had one good plus, it was hard to understand much of anything, for all the other guy would know Taro COULD have been acting... or at least he'd hoped he'd go along with it. He typed in another message and pronounced it with difficulty, getting caught up on a word here or there and making it completely unintelligable. "Make your message here it may, as for me what is said cannot be found."
He held out the translator to the other man, motioning for him to take it.Zachary Bloodstone The 'dragon' looked puzzled again at the broken English the foreigner spoke. So this other man was an actor, it appeared. This was getting more difficult. Lying seemed worse of an idea than before. Even that, passed, though. Soreness at the sight of the Asian man running and screaming not a few minutes ago provoked him to continue his guilt-free charade. Gingerly he took the device. After examining it, he figured out how to type into it and began to prod it into taking his message. Anyone the man met would dispute the simple collection of short sentences that Zach was giving to him in an instant. That was the Chinese guy's problem, though. In English, the screen read, "I am an actor too. Everyone here has costumes." As an afterthought, he added, "You will too." In the process of hitting buttons, a claw pressed into a small rubber button and pulled it off. "Oops!" He gave the translator and the small button back to the man, hoping he knew what to do with it to turn the English into Chinese. Taro Hirohito T aro frowned as the man handed back the device and it's seperated button. The message was jumbled but he understood most of what the other was trying to say. But... it didn't make much sense...
He tapped in another message. "Why obtaine design in the peaceful unit?"
Why would the Peace Corp have a bunch of actors? What was the point in getting a costume? This was really ******** up. "What type of location is this?"Zachary Bloodstone Peaceful unit? More like a psycho ward. His mind worked to decipher the bizarre-sounding question and supply a believable answer. What were costumes for? Movies! "It's an, uh... movie set." He realized once again that the other man couldn't understand a thing he'd said, and slowly typed it in. The language barrier was infinitely frustrating. His simple lie was already being figured out very easily. More detailed explanation followed, which he said aloud slowly as he wrote. "The movie.... is about people... on an island... turning into animals. Everyone here... will... tell you this." He handed back the translation device and plastered an extremely fake grin on his face. Would the guy buy it? There were no other alternatives but the real truth, and that was a significantly bigger leap of faith than believing the twisted bit of explanation he'd put forth. If it was this easy to stop the newer people from tripping over their own feet screaming bloody murder at the sight of him, he'd have to keep using it. He wasn't getting any more human as it was. Taro Hirohito T aro's eyes narrowed suspiciously, he looked up slightly over the device toward the other man, inspecting him carefully. For some reason this person was lieing to him... or he had been lied to by the ones that told him he was going to this island to spend a term under the Peace Corps. For a moment he wondered if this might be some kind of elaborate reality TV kind of thing. It seemed a little... too far fetched, though. He pursed his lips, looking over this stranger once more. Horns, bizarre red skin.. like scales perhaps, strange growths at the sides of his head, and of course that tail. He had yet to get behind him to see if anything else was different back there. A movie set...? Well.. maybe. The little set-up WAS pretty posh and clean, probably too much so for an actual Peace Corps village. When he'd been looking through websites and the other s**t he'd just seen little run down village township things where the children had bloated stomachs from lack of food and that kind of thing. But did he believe it... He bit his lip and tapped another message, this time not even bothering to try to pronounce it in his seriousness and curiosity. "I was told I came here for the Peaceful Unit, not a movie. Really, what is this place?" He handed it over and looked up at the other. Usually he wouldn't be so serious but if he was someplace he wasn't supposed to be.. well he might have to have a talk with someone. As fun as a movie would be he was serious about going to Peace Corps so he could get into a good college.Zachary Bloodstone He continued to flash his smile, forgetting for the moment that showing off his sharp teeth didn't help increase his human appearance. ... Not in a movie? What else would an actor want to be doing here, especially a foreign one with nothing but a little translation device? He was stumped again, weakly taking the device. Nothing seemed to come to mind for what he could say but the actual truth. Or perhaps not. He had no clue what a 'peaceful unit' was. Maybe it was a resort, and this guy was some top-notch actor from China. Tap, tap, tap. He read aloud, though the other man evidently couldn't understand a word he said. It was more about his own comfort level than the one of the uninformed asian. "Maybe the director didn't talk to you about your part in the movie yet." He stopped, realizing that there may be a small hope of beating some scraps of English into this man. Onto the small device, he wrote a small amount more before returning it to its owner. "Sorry I did not ask before, but what is your name?" Taro Hirohito T aro was... well alright, he couldn't continue to be ALL that angry anymore. A movie, huh? This was a once in a lifetime chance, and besides, if he couldn't get into a college but was being offered an acting job.. well that paid a LOT, which served his purpose just fine.
He couldn't help but let slip a little grin as he held the device more like it was a toy than a tool, once more yammering out his interpritation of the text that appeared on screen. "Sugoi! I did not expect this kind of what under any condition!" An actor! He'd never thought of it before but HEY! Why not?
Name? He understood that word in english. He pointed to himself, using what he could remember of that phrase. "Ano.... I.. ano.. nameu Hirohito Taro." He placed his hand on his chest as though to further display that the name belonged to him. He then pointed at the other. "Nameu?"
HA! Take that translator. He unconsciencly puffed out a little with his mastery over the English language. This wouldn't be so hard.Zachary Bloodstone He glanced over Hirohito's face. The grin and exclamation of surprise sealed it. Zach's slightly faster swishing of his tail betrayed his relief - this man had bought it! Now he felt a small twinge of guilt - he was telling the man what he wanted to hear, and not what was going to happen. He was acting just like the doctors. He paused briefly as Hirohito apparently asked his name, though between the garbling of pronounciation and the odd 'u' put at the end of the question almost threw him off. "My name is..." His mind raced. He didn't want to give his real name to the guy. Of course, he forgot how Hirohito could easily recognize him by his appearance. Well, he could fool the guy somehow, and just hope he never met the unfortunate guy again. He'd just give someone else's name, someone he didn't know very well. He pointed at himself. "Ian!" Taro Hirohito H e nodded. "Ian." It was easy enough to pronounce. He thought about trying to shake the other's hand but those claw-gloves looked like they must have taken a LONG time to get on. He was very excited now. A movie! He was going to be in a movie, this was so much better than Peace Corps.
Taro waved a hand, trying to express what he wanted to say without having to bother with the damn troublesome translator. "I'm going to go now. Ano..." He pointed back to his duplex and made a walking motion with his hand, and then waved.
He started walking back to his duplex, looking over his shoudler once to be sure that Ian didn't think that Taro had meant to follow him. When he was satisfied he turned back full front.
The sky was surely more blue, the grass definatly more green, and the sun felt brighter and warmer than ever. Things were looking upward for once, he was going to be... a STAR! (Who doesn't imagine being a star at least once in their life?)

[ 5. ]
He spent the rest of the day pacing around his room, the distraction of being in a movie pushing out the sour thoughts of Natsumi from his mind at the moment. He welcomed the distraction, he didn't want to think about her anyway, she'd hurt him.
Everyone would be playing animals, huh... what kind of movie was that, though? And what animal would he be? What role would he have? Would he be the star, or would he just be one of those lousy backdrop characters? No, he HAD to be the star, why else would they specifically trick him and bring him to this island the way they had? He was the star, or maybe the villan. It wouldn't be so bad playing the bad guy.
Taro flopped face first onto his bed, laying into the pillow thoughtfully.
...He wanted to tell Kiki about this!
He flipped over again, sitting up and reaching down beneath the bed, fishing around a moment for his Nintendo DS. Ah, there it was. He flipped it open and turned on Animal Crossing.
Kiki was by far his favourite neighbor, he wrote letters to her all the time and while all the others had packed up and moved away she had always remained. He found that Daisy and PomPom had moved out and a new neighbor named Chief had moved in - a wolf! Those weren't very common.
He spent the next few hours playing until he set the handheld down and fell asleep.

[ 6. ]Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi sighed, stepping into the place that had so recently been under construction. She was wearing a sweater, sleeves rolled up due to the fact she'd been baking in the midday heat. She had an old english book in her arms, the one she had brought along just incase she happed to forget some basic word arrangements, and it sufficed as a small dictionary too... She was glad that she hadn't found a need for it for herself, but at the same time very unhappy as to what use it had come to.
"Not good, not good..." she mumbled to herself, looking over the good 50 more dupleses set up... There was no way she could find himin all this, even if she had promised to help him...
And with that thought, the thought of escape.. and excuse to just leave the whole thing behind her, her courage died then burst into flames. Her stomach filled with proverbial butterflies.. and.. Maybe a few real ones, who knew now a days. She turned away from the buildings, if she saw him.. she'd just say she couldn't find him, and that way... she could avoid him liek the plauge until her feelings subsided and she felt she could be nice and civil towards him. Maybe even be friends... But, that wasn't now. Taro Hirohito H e wasn't even thinking of her when he left his duplex. He was been intent on more exploration, he hadn't gotten much before and things more important like video games and re-arranging his room to a set up he more preferred took precidence over learning the lay of the land or practicing is english. So when he saw her familiar figure retreiting he was taken off guard. For a moment he thought about just ignoring her... by now he'd grown more resentful and angry towards her. She'd come out here just to cheat on him with that guy. But the thought was quickly replaced by the hope of talking with her about the movie.. she'd probably know what was going on, who had what roles, who the director was. "Natsumi-san!" He shouted to her, taking his one step down and walkng out toward her a little.Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi flinched. Her courage had melted into the ground, and so now he chose to pop out of nowhere. Damn you small island coincidences. She swallowed hard, spinning around to lock eyes with him. Her somewhat determined expresion broke upon eye contact, her eyes falling to the ground. "Here." She held out the book, with a long silent pause while he made his way over to get it... She woul dhave brought it over, but for whatever reason her legs didn't want to move. What did he think of her? Her scales.. Her pregnancy... Her fat. By the time he got there, she found somethign to say "... I'm not fat." Taro Hirohito T aro realized that she was going to make him walk over, starting toward her with a sigh. He reached her in time to hear her comment. He looked down with a scowl of shame. "I didn't mean to hurt your feelings..." He'd just been trying to make her laugh, couldn't she tell he was just playing? Really.. he did think she'd gained some weight... maybe she was doing it for her role. Some actors did that. He stood awkwardly for a moment, taking the book and looking down at it... basic english. This was definatly more useful then that damn Translator machine or his pocket travel dictionary. He needed something to teach him the basics before that could be helpful. He scratched his shoulder slightly, finally looking up more so he could see her face. He frowned a little - what he thought had been a bruise before looked like some of that elaborate scale make-up, like Ian had. "So..." Another moment of awkward pause... "I found out this is all for a movie... how'd they get you here? They told me I was going to be going to the Peace Corps." It was stiff small-talk, in all honesty, but it was something. He wanted to demand some anwers - like exactly who was this Thom to her.Natsumi Tanaka She shifted uncomfortably as he stared. Stop looking... She kept her eyes on the ground until he said.. that. A MOVIE? She stared at him, mouth falling open ever so slightly. This horrible place was some simple little movie? No... This place hurt. It hurt her... and her friends.. Alec. Oh god, Alec. His recent changes had completely put her on edge in anticipation to her own. She felt so bad for him... And even worse that the changes had made her so nervious around him. She just stood ther ein silence for a moment... Who on earth would be cruel enough to tell him a lie like that? "A.. Movie? Who told you that?" Taro Hirohito T aro was a bit confused by her reaction. Was he not supposed to know yet or something...? "A guy... um.. Ian. He had big horns and red skin.. and a tail. Kind of like yours, but longer. He said I'd be getting an animal costume too."Natsumi Tanaka Ian? No.. That.. wasn't the Ian she knew. It sounded alot more like Zach... But... Zach seemed rather creepy, not the kind of person to joke around. Plus, Taro had said his name was Ian. Well. That didn't matter now. What mattered, was making sure he knew what was going on. Even if she was unhappy with him, she didn't want to see him get suprised by something like this.
The whole idea of someone telling him this was all just a movie was unnerving, it wasn't somethign to joke aobut.. It was horrible. "It... It's not a movie." Crap, why did she have to tell him. She frowned, finding the guts to look him in the eyes. Telling herself this was important, no matter what her feelings were. "If I could take these... things off... I would. But I can't. The shot you get when you come here, it's some.. science thing, to turn you into an animal. Everyone... into an animal." Taro Hirohito H is eyebrows quirked upward. For a moment his heart beat hard when she looked into his eyes, but he quickly squished those emotions. Not now, it didn't matter, she was a cheater, remember she was a cheater. However the words that spouted from her mouth were... complete non-sense.
"The... no, that was a vaccination. For SARS or something.. aaaahh.. wait. Okay." He suddenly grinned, noding dramatically and leaning in slightly, giving a stage whisper. "Is that the movie plot? That's cool!"Natsumi Tanaka Somehow the word "cool" tied into Alec's changes... In her mind, he had seemed to laugh at her friends horrible problems. None of this was cool... This was not some big funny joke. She frowned, along with that one question in her mind kept begging to be asked. Why did he leave her? And did he mean that... When he said he was sorry? Or was he lieing like everyone said he'd always been doing? She shook her head some, trying to focus. Her mind was blurring again, her heart was starting to ache...She wanted to cry. Not this time though.. Not again, or atleast not infront of him. "No..." she sighed, trying to figure out how to make this actually sound real. It was hard to beleive, she knew but... Aha. "Look." she stated quickly, turning around to show him her tail. With that, she gave it a sharp tug flinching some when she did so... That had hurt more than she thought. "It doesn't come off." Taro Hirohito T he sudden show of tail pulling set Taro a little off guard. She had tugged rather hard... but maybe glue..? Without thinking he reached forward to touch it himself, blinking in slight wonder.
He ran his hand up along her tail, intending to reach it's base. The texture of the scales... the temperature.. the feeling. It was... He stopped just a little shy of the base and pulled his hand away as though he might have been hurt. His eyebrows creased and he reached out to lightly hold Natsumi's arm, turning her so she faced him. He looked intently at her forehead, reaching up to touch that as well.
He couldn't hide the expression of sudden horrified disgust, still holding onto her arm. "What... is this..? Are you lieing?" His head felt slightly as though it were spinning. Everyone was lieing to him. Peace Corps, a movie... now turning into animals.
Which was truth?! In this moment of confusion he forgot he was supposed to be angry with her, looking to her with an expression of being lost. She'd tell him the truth, wouldn't she? Honest Natsumi...Natsumi Tanaka She pulled her hands back infront of her before he managed to reach her tail. She visibally tensed as his hand went up it, her heart skipped a beat and her face flushed. The tail wiggled in responce, trying to escape the forign touch, and retreating to pull up against the back of her leg. No one but her had touched her tail yet, and it felt.. strange. Like someone touching the side of a leg or something. She wasn't sure if it felt good or bad, though.. for now, she dubbed it bad as he had gone the wrong direction up the scaling, though her scales weren't paticularly sensitive to this. She turned her head away from him as roughly pulled her around to face him. Her stomach tightened, not only had the sudden touch startled her but once again, she was struck with the feeling of not wanting him to see her again. Her throat was next to tighten, as she bit into her lip to work up the courage to speak again. "I'm sorry..." she choked out, the urge to turn and run form him was increasing. And his look wasn't helping. "I wouldn't lie about... this." She paused, before finally looking straight at him, lightly trying to tug her arm away. "I'm not lieing, I have scales. On my arms too. I have webbed feet and I eat BUGS." The last part came out at an awkward pitch.. She was losing it again. Don't cry, please don't cry. After a pause, she muttered softly "Why'd you have to come here?" Maybe it was guilt... Maybe she felt that the part of her that wished to have him back had gotten here. Whatever it was, the idea that he too would turn into some hidious monster made her sick to her stomach. Composure... She mentally scolded, she was definatly failing this calm-woman role. Taro Hirohito H e looked at her blankly as she had her little outburst. Very, very slowly, the information was sinking in. People here were turning into animals. Natsumi had a tail and scales. This was going to happen to him.
No, no... this couldn't happen to him... not this. He was rich, he was here for a good cause in the first place. No, it couldn't happen to him. It didn't help matters that it was still... so hard to beleive, even coming from Natsumi. He looked at her sharply when she asked her question. He was confused, he was a bit frightened.
"I came here to serve for the Peace Corps... so I could get into a better college and come back to you." Resentment, hurt. He'd done this for her and now he was going to turn... no, no he wasn't. It was just a shot for SARS. But still, he couldn't keep the hot anger from rising up within his chest. "Why didn't you wait? Were you here when I went to see you before I left? Didn't you get my letter?"
He had poured his heart and soul out into that letter... like he never had before. It'd been pages long expressing everything he could ever feel. Now... now that was gone. She hadn't gotten it, she hadn't read it and there was no chance now, really for her to read it unless they got mail on this crazy island.. and besides it wouldn't serve any good now, she was cheating on him with that guy.
"Why couldn't you have waited for me?!" He would have been back soon and then... but that was impossible now. His heart ached so badly he felt it might just stop.Natsumi Tanaka She let out a sigh as she watched the information sink in, taking that moment of shock to get her arm away from him. Then taking a few steps back so he wouldn't grab her again. Her eyes were trying to water up, threatning to burst forth in another fit of tears. Her head hurt again, telling her to just turn and run and face him later... But if she'd realized anything yesterday with Kikue it was that she needed to stop running from things.
She choked when he spoke though... Come back to her? Letter? She didn't need to be here? She could have been back home? He hadn't avoided her? Her eyes widened. That was too much for her. She wobbled some, looking as though she very well might faint. "Wait...?" She questioned, breathlessly. "How could I wait...? You... You were gone. You ignored me... I had no choice!" she fisted her hands at her sides, almost trying to convince herself of what she was saying. That was right.. She had no choice but to try and come here. This wasn't her fault, this was his fault. At least.. That's what she wanted to beleive. Taro Hirohito " Ignore you? When did I ever do that?" His fists tightened at his sides. "I told you I loved you, didn't I?" Of course he was referring to the time when they had... well.. he felt a small stir of emotion as he remembered THAT night.
He sighed and reached up to press his palm against his forehead. This was all muddling so much. He was extremly confused about all of this, and part of him still couldn't believe that what Natsumi said was really going to happen. He was somehow magically immune, he had to be.Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi swayed some again, don't faint... please... she mentally pleaded with herself. "After.. graduation. I called you, i even went all the way to your house! I had no choice, I had to go or they'd find out about--" She fell into silence abruptly. Her heart felt as though it had stopped... She hadn't told him yet. She didn't want to tell him now. She didn't even want him to be here now. She took a few steps back, debating running again. That option was sounding more and more likeable as this went on... Taro Hirohito T aro pressed his lips together. "I went away for a little bit.. I had to, I didn't want to bring you shame... I didn't even graduate. Would you have really wanted to stay with someone like that?"
He tilted his head to the side as she stopped, his attention caught by this little faulter. A secret, a secret, but what? "Find out about... what?" He looked at her blankly. What had to be hidden so much that she'd have to leave her home...? A small notion itched at the back of his mind and he ducked his head.
Was it beacuse she wasn't a virgin anymore...? That was kind of stupid, she could have kept it a secret.Natsumi Tanaka That was it? He hadn't graduated so he had ran off from her? The first word that came to mind was 'idiot.' Ofcourse he hadn't passed.. he never attended classes. That came as no shock to her... What did shock her was that he had cared enough about shaming her. And while somewher ein the back of her mind that touched her heart, that was covered up with pure irritation. "Idiot." she muttered, lower lip wobbling. "Of course I would have...." she locked her eyes to the ground, edging a few steps back. She was confused... She had no idea what to think about him or what to do. Her feelings were still hurt... but at the same time she felt that maybe they didn't need to be. And this, along with his general density, and pregnant hormones were slowly edging away the reserved girl's composure. Before he asked about what... Part of her felt like he should have noticed by now. Everyone else had. Even her sweater wasn't hiding it. She stared at him a moment... Before somethign seemed to snap. "About me being PREGNANT." She shouted the last word, looking generally upset as a few tears finally made their way down her face. She wibbled a moment, before turning to walk as fast as she could away from him without flat out running away. "You've got your book... I need to think. Leave me alone." She wasn't sure if he'd follow her or not, but just in case she called that over her shoulder. She'd done what she promised... Now... She had to figure out what was going on with her life. Perhaps it was time to face everything she'd been tryign to ignor since she left Japan... Taro Hirohito I t took a few moments for the words to sink in, long enough that she was quite far away by the time he registered and connected information. She had looked chubby but.. he'd honestly just thought she'd gained weight since coming here. He made no attempt to follow her, rooted to the spot holding that damn book.
Pregnant.
No. He shook his head even though there wasn't anyone to see. No, no, no, nononononono. NO. Yuck. No. Bad! Terrible! He didn't.. no NO WAY! He was too young! He still had too much to do!
Or wait... WAIT! That Thom guy, the one she'd cheated on him with! It felt like flame suddenly burnt through his veins. He tightened his grip on the book, teeth clenching. That... that...
"Whore!" He cursed quietly to himself, throwing the book down violently and kicking it as hard as he could across the grass. A few pages were torn lose immediatly and went fluttering on the island breeze. He picked up the book in a huff and stormed back to his duplex, slamming the door shut violently enough that should anyone be upstairs they would feel it.
He threw the book down again immediatly.
So much was happening, too much all at once! Lies! What was the truth?! Deception and hurt!
Silently Taro vowed to kill Thom. Even if nothing was true, even if he wasn't involved. Taro needed someone to direct this hatred and hurt at, the man that Natsumi had ran to was a good enough target.

[ 7. ]Ian Campbell After Emer had left his duplex Ian dragged himself to the cafeteria with help of his staff. He was sad and confused, but he had an instict as to what he would say during their next conversation. He would bring up the letter, and ask her how she felt. It would be hard but he had to find the courage somehow. He didn't say anything while grabbing some lettuce from the food line and he settled down at a table in the corner. Life was easier before he fell in love, he decided. Much easier. Taro Hirohito D espite what everyone had told him when he was younger, sleep does not cure all things. In fact if it was even possible he woke up more miserable than he'd been last night. Food would help, probably. He hadn't eaten a proper meal since before he'd arrived.
He wandered for a while, not seeing anyone else, thank god. He finally entered the large building set in the center of all the houses, peeking in. Nobody had bothered to explain to him where everything was, so it was all a bit trial and error. He was delighted to discover that this seemed to be a cafeteria of sorts, stepping in.
He immediatly paused, seeing one of those... people. This one was quite... bizarre. It looked mostly like some sort of hoved, horned creature. An elk maybe? A deer? It was unnerving, whatever it was. He decided to ignore it for now and headed over to where it looked like he could get ********. Error. He didn't speak english, he didn't know what to do. He fumbled with the damn pocket translator, pulling it out and figiting with it. What he really wanted was a nice big bowl of chicken soba soup and a nice tall glass of ice cold bottled water. It looked like there was a line off to the side with some food, however.
He wasn't happy about it, but he grabbed a few of the most delicious looking meat based items, a glass of water, and then went to sit at a table that was a few away from the only other guy sitting in here at the moment.Ian Campbell Ian looked over at the man that had just sat down. WEll, he sure seemed antisocial. That was just as well, Ian didn't feel much like talking anyway. He finished his lettuce and moved to exit the cafeteria having to pass the table Taro was sitting at on his way. As it happened, as he was passing by the table his hoof slipped on the staff that helped him walk and he was thrown off balance nearly falling into the man. "Sorry!" the deer spoke hastily and quickly regained his footing looking a bit sheepish. Taro Hirohito T aro stood up immediatly, almost knocking his food over. "Hey! Watch where you're going. God, what are you?" Taro flinched away from the deer man - a part of his brain still registered the strange, bestial apperance of all the other islanders as costumes.
It had to be there was just no way for them to really be turning into animals.
Taro was just shy of raising a hand to try and punch the other away. He was in a foul mood for more reasons than one and having this ugly THING nearly land on him wasn't very helpful. As it was he flapped his hands wildly at the other, cursing at him loudly in his native language.Ian Campbell When the man was flailing madly at him Ian lost what footing he had gained and fell to the floor with an oomph. Ian couldn't understand what he was saying, but by the tone of his voice he assumed it wasn't very polite. Hopefully, whoever this guy was, he knew about the island and the people here. If not. . "I'm really sorry honest! Its my leg!" Ian gestured towards his bad leg with a hoof and looked sheepish. He really didn't want to have to deal with this. Taro Hirohito T aro stopped his yelling and instead glared. The man was disgusting, an animal. He wasn't even a man, he was an it, a thing. There was a split second where Taro thought about hitting the deer-thing.
He recalled Thom, however, and there was also the real fear of the thing hitting him back, and those things on his hands and feet looked like they'd cause a great deal of pain. Instead he opted to rummage around angrily for his translator and tap in a message.
"The place where it has gone, watch." He scowled at the other, taking a moment to look him over, a little thoughtfully. As a side he added. "It is what?"
He motioned to the translator and then thrust it forward at the thing. It was human once, and it was obviously speaking english. Here's to hoping it could type with those disfigured appendages that were probably supposed to be hands.Ian Campbell Ian looked over the translator and grimaced, glancing at his hooves. He would have to try though it would be hard. And beside that he didn't quite understand the question. "wew are alkl turning into animals here." he put that with relatively few typos and d he continued hopingt the translation would get the point across. "you invcluded. never leave. we have wolves, deer lizards." And he pushed the translator back feeling even more uncomfortable with each passing minute. Taro Hirohito T aro looked at the garbled translation. All words misspelled were instantly not translated, and it didn't help that it was jumbled up slightly to begin with.
He got the barest minimum of what the other was trying to say, though. He looked up and pinned the deer-thing with a simmering glare. For all intents and purposes Taro was imagining that everything was this abominations fault, and it did so make everything easier.
It was this things fault that Natsumi hated him, that she was cheating on him with that guy, that she was pregnant with probably his baby, but it was probably more likely that other guys.
All. His. Fault.
Taro let loose a string of angry curses at the poor bystander, fists balling at his sides as his face flushed with the passion of his anger. Spittle flew off of his lips. His rage was as good as waisted on this thing but it felt so good to just let himself fly off the handlebar. It also helped that it probably didn't understand a single word, which was probably for the better, it might have been either hurt deeply or enraged.
Finally he began to wind down, his anger switching to vague, detached fear. "This isn't going to happen to me, you're a freak. I'll get word through to my parents and they'll get me off this place. I'll be scott free." And, since the idea of being free of this place was exceptionally delicious he repeated the word. "Free."
He stopped, falling silent and smug, arms crossed over his chest. He stared at the deer-thing for a little bit, traces of contempt still in his eyes, before turning completely away from him and sitting back down at the bench he'd been on, picking up his spoon, and continuing to eat.Ian Campbell During the entire long rant Ian just stood there his eyes widened. He had no clue what the guy was saying but from the rage Ian could see in his eyes and the rage Ian could smell, it was definately not good. When there was a significant pause the deer hesitated and took a step backwards hoping that the man would not become violent. Ian had no particular desire to hurt anyone, and he might be left with no other choice should the man decide to attack. "No harm," he pleaded. "No harm." Taro Hirohito T aro paused in his dining to shoot the deer man another glare. He gave a huff, ignoring him and whatever it was he said and continuing to consume his food.
After a few bites it wasn't really that appealing anymore. He looked back up, slightly disgruntled and pointed at the other, using the only english he could speak on his own.
"Name?" He pointed to himself. "I am Hirohito Taro. Pleased meet you."
His accent was thick and difficult to understand.Ian Campbell So now this guy was trying to be civil? Well, I an supposed that the guy had a right to be mad, after all he was stuck on an island about to be turned into an animal. "Ian Campbell." the deer replied speaking slowly and carefully for Taro's benefit, correctly assuming the name Taro was his first name. Of course, there could have been more to the name Taro, the accent was rather hard to understand. Another question nagged at him and he had to ask. "Are you mad at me?" He was still speaking slowly so the other man could understand. Taro Hirohito O h great, another Ian. Well it wasn't like it'd be too difficult to tell them apart, one was a terrifying lizard thing, the other was a disgusting deer thing.
"Ian." he said the name easily enough.
He didn't understand the other question, however. He furrowed his eyebrows, scowling lightly. He didn't want to have to bother with this guy anymore, he was annoying. Blowing him off didn't seem to work though.
He shrugged, looking blankly at the other. "No engrish." He said simply, and then haphazardly tossed the translator onto the table. It skidded over to Ian with a clatter, the screen blank and ready for a message.Ian Campbell Ian scowled at the translator and didn't touch it. HIs hooves made it so he couldn't type. "Can't type." he said just as simply as Taro had. This was extremely annoying. Natsumi had spoken much better English than this idiot. "We're done talking," he said in a half growl (which sounded extremely weird since he was a deer) and started to limp away using his staff to head towards the door. Surely if Ian wanted to talk to someone he could find someone that knew English, and wasn't mad at him for no apparent reason. Taro Hirohito T aro watched the freak limp away, giving a half shrug to himself. He reached over and grabbed the translator, stuffing it back into his pocket. Fine, he didn't want to talk to the deer-thing anyway.
If he wanted to talk to someone he could find someone that knew Japanese.

The decision had come suddenly. As soon as he'd left the company of that deer-thing named Ian in the cafeteria, actually. The people here... they weren't even people anymore, they were sick things. They were perverted statues taken from some latent nightmare, sculpted by a cruel, sadistic hand.
What hand though... who...? Who was doing this to people? He'd been told he was going to change into one of these things too - was it Doctor Sabin, the man that had injected him? Hadn't someone said it was a shot? He couldn't remember who, the information had been useless to him at the time and so had been casually thrown to the side. Taro lifted his sleeve to inspect his arm where the needle had been inserted.
The skin was clear, there wasn't any bruising, no discolouration. Not that he was a doctor himself or anything, he just figured he'd know if something was wrong. He didn't feel ill... well there had been the first night...
Taro winced and shoved those memories to the back as well. He didn't want to think about the first night, it never happened for all he cared. He paced the length of the front room, chasing thoughts 'round and 'round in his head. Who? What? When? How? Why?
Why?
Why, why, why, why, why?!
He swiped his hair out of his eyes, pressing it against his forehead as he paced in continuously aggrivated circles.
Natsumi was such a b***h.
Why was he even bothering thinking about all this? He'd learn some more english, or at least enough to serve his purpose, then he'd find that Doctor Sabin again and tell him he was ready to go. He already had all of his things packed up and set in a nice little pile in the corner, just a few of the necissary things were still out, toobrush, shampoo, Nintendo DS. He was tired of this place, it'd make a great amusement park someday but he didn't want to take part in it.
After he made arrangements with Doctor Sabin to leave, he'd call his parents, they'd find a way to pick him up (even if they had practically thrown him out of the house and into the peace corps, they would definatly take him back if he told them about this place). He'd get home, he'd call his friends, maybe ask Mae out on a date, she was really cute.
Why did Natsumi have to be here?
He wished there was a TV here, even if he wouldn't be able to understand what they were saying. Playing the same games, listening to the same music and studying English could only occupy him for so long.
Why did Natsumi have to say that to him?!
He threw himself onto his bed, pressing his face into the pillow. He hated this place. He was making his protest by staying in his duplex for as long as it took to get off the damn island - a few weeks by now. He left occasionally to get food and drink, and had made an extreme point to NOT see anyone else in the process.
He couldn't even enjoy the place. It was an awesome tropical island, who didn't want to have a free, everything paid for vacation on one? The weather was hot and humid, yeah, but it only made it better to swim, and the food was good. It was just these...
..."Ugh! Just SHUT UP!" He pressed his hands against his temples, ordering himself to be silent. He didn't want to be going around in circles thinking of the same things over and over. He wanted to have some FUN. He wanted to swim, damnit... The beach.. yeah. The sun, the sand, the waves.. to bad he didn't have a board here.
He looked outside, the weather was nice, as usual. Hardly a cloud... he glanced over at his duffle bag - there was a pair of swimtrunks in there, he knew it. A swim. Yeah, a swim, that would be awesome.
He could just ignore everything else if he went swimming.
Before he could make the effort to get up and get ready to go to the beach, though, he found he was rather tired from his stressful thinking and long nights of staying up to cram. A nap first, and then the beach.
Yeah.. it was nice here, he could do what he wanted, at least. Sleep all day, eat what he wanted, swim at a beach... maybe...
Nah..
Natsumi was such a b***h.

[ 10. ] Natsumi Tanaka Natsumi had long ago gotten desperate for company... Her head was swirling with thoughts again. Depressed, guilt ridden thoughts... And fearful. The thought of being alone had wrapped itself around her mind so tight she just had to find someone... She had gone downstairs to Thom first. But he hadn't been there... It wasn't a big suprise, he was a very active sort of person. And it was getting later in the day... About lunch time.
But without Thom... She could only think of one other person. One person that used to offer her all kinds of sweet nothings and comforting hugs, kisses... And as petty as it felt, she desperatly wanted those back at the moment.
And now here she was, retracing what she remembered the last time she'd seen him... She had thought he'd come out of this duplex, number 53. But she wasn't sure... And her head was so muddled she could barely remember anything clearly. However as dumb luck would have it, she had the right one. She gave a timid knock on the front door, eyes already filled with tears again. One arm was wrapped around her all too flat stomach. "Taro...?" Taro Hirohito H e'd just fallen into a light, uneasy doze when a knocking woke him up with a start. He looked around frantically for a moment, not recognizing the room and trying to figure out where he was.
Then he remembered.
He knew that soft, quivery voice anywhere. It was Natsumi on the other side. For a moment he wondered if he should open the door and see what she wanted, maybe she was here to beg him to forgive her on her knees. He'd graciously take her back only if she told him that what she'd said about there being a baby was a lie, like it was.
But why? Why should he? He wasn't really in a good mood, anyway, and even if she DID beg him did she really deserve him? Especially if she couldn't wait just a few weeks (or had it been a month?) for him to send her a postcard telling her where he was.
He found he'd already gotten up off his bed and was standing beside the door. He grimaced and clenched his fists. "What?" He snapped the word quickly and harshly.Natsumi Tanaka Her heart lept into her throat as his snapped voice came through from the other side of the door. She flinched some, tail twitching, taking a timid step backwards. Suddenlly she remembered why she hadn't wanted to see him... Her transformation was further along, and her child.. no. THEIR child was... dead.
A few tears spilled over and down her cheeks, she couldn't run away now though... So she steadied herself... "I... Aa... Can.. I talk to you?" That was the only thing she could think to say... While really it was more of a 'can you open the door and hug me?' She wouldn't dare say that. Her voice seemed tighter than the first time as she tried desperatly to hold back tears. Taro Hirohito T aro pressed his lips together, leaning slightly against the door. There was a long pause, or at least to Natsumi it might feel long, where he considered everything. Everything that had happened, everything she'd done to him. He felt a deep twinge of hurt in his chest, the muscles around his eyes and in his throat tightning. She hurt him more than she realized (or at least he'd thought she did).
Yes, she COULD talk to him, but he wasn't going to let her say much more than that.
He banged the side of his fist hard on the door, making it rattle on it's hinges slightly. "No. Go away, you slut. Go spread your legs for someone else, maybe that red guy this time, huh?"
He turned away, pressing his back against the wood and staring intently at the space of wall directly in front of him across the room. His heart raced in his chest, he'd said something incredibly harsh... but... he meant it. Every word.
Didn't he?Natsumi Tanaka It seemed all too long... Her mind begged for him to just let her in. And then.. he spoke.
She felt something crunch, crack.. shatter possibly. Her mouth fell open. Slut? She felt her blood run cold as the words sunk in... She.. she wasn't... He had said. He said he'd marry her, he said he'd love her forever... He said... He said she was a slut.
She let out a heartbroken squeak, trying even harder not to burst into tears. So.. that's what he really thought. So.. everyone was right. He'd just been lieing. She took a few steps backwards, biting into her lip as tears dripped down her cheeks.
She felt maybe she should say something, but it felt like her mind had stopped... So, she simply turn and ran. Ran as fast as her legs could carry her back towards her duplex.

That morning you had awoken feeling horribly cold and ill. Your insides ached and felt uncomfortably stiff, your joints hurting as though someone where running ice up and down your bones- a distracting enough discomfort that stops you from noticing the red puncture wound on the back of your neck. Staying indoors to try to rest away what seemed like a sudden island flu, your relief comes from when you finally step outside. Although you still ache, the sun seems to warm the horrible clammy cold feeling that had set through you. It doesn't take long befor the aches get worse, though, as though the hot afternoon sun had triggered some sort of effect. The flesh under your skin throbs, certain patches along the arm and the fatty areas of your stomach take on a strange, ribbed texture that is tinted a slight greenish brown under the semi translucent skin. Befor you can truly take in the horror of what you see just below the surface of your still human outer shell, you feel your teeth starting to push down from your gums, grinding and clicking and popping free to make way for a row of sharp spines, like twin rows of thick needles. Your toes equally start contorting, twisting, numbing, becoming almost root-like. Fortunatly you can still walk like normal easily, but shoes will forever seem far too confining, and when you stand still for too long, you find your toes attempting to dig into the ground where ever you might be. There is a breif moment for you to catch your breath from the pain when suddenly clusters of sharp, cactus spines pierce through your skin in waves up and down your body, from your face, from your chest, chin, cheaks, arms, stomach, legs, everywhere in small patches that leak blood from where your skin is torn to make way for them. A plant seems to be growing inside of you.

Taro woke up from dreams of heat and sun in a cold sweat. The moment he opened his eyes he noticed how dry they felt, like when you're too dehydrated. Second was the horrible cold and ache, his muscles felt cramped and shivery.
He groaned deeply, curling up on himself as he lay in bed, wrapping his arms about his stomach. He was sick? Goddamnit, hadn't he gotten that ******** hassle of an injection to prevent this!? He rolled slightly, trying to sit up, limbs feeling heavy and stiff. He shivered violently, groggily struggling to his feet. He swayed in spot for a moment, looking around in a daze.
The sunlight filtered in through the window, dappling through the curtains onto his floor. For a moment he felt himself compelled to step toward it, pausing only to consider the door. Yes, outside. He wanted to be outside, in the sunlight, maybe it'd warm him up. He felt like it might do even more, perhaps, what he wasn't sure.
He tottered over and stepped outside, sighing. There was a brief moment as the sun slid butter yellow over his skin, warming him entirely. The small sigh of pleasure and satisfaction was cut short into a sharp his. He doubled over, arms clenching over his middle as he closed his eyes tightly. "Oh god, ahh... what.." It hurt.
It felt like his whole body was throbbing, that itchy, painful pins and needles feeling spreading rappidly over his skin along his arms and stomach. He watched distantly as the pigmentation of his flesh actually began to change, first darker, then more yellow, then greenish-brown. It didn't comprehend that something wrong was happeneing until his body started to change shape.
But before that terror could fully claim him another took over. A dull grinding was scraping over his gums. He pressed his tongue against the back of a tooth only to feel it fall loose against his tongue. He spat violently, his face contorting into fear as more came out with the one he'd felt before. Soon they were gone, all gone. He began to groan deeply, parting his lips as something new and sharp pushed through the tender flesh. He moved to run his tongue desperatly along these new formations only to yelp and cry out in alarm as his tongue was cut into and he tasted blood in his mouth.
Finally Taro began to scream in fear.

It was the screams that finally drew Thom to the scene. Admittedly, he had been on his way to Taro's duplex anyway, but he had been taking his time, working out how best to beat the hell out of Taro without actually beating the hell out of him. As must as it would amuse him, and as much as Taro deserved it, it was likely to only make things worse when Taro and Natsumi spoke again. He wasn't terribly angry either, just peeved that anyone would call Natsumi, of all people, something like that, especially someone she cared for.
And then the screams began. Thom reacted without even thinking, quickening his awkward crutch-step pace to head towards the sounds. It wasn't long before Taro came into sight, screaming at the top of his lungs outside of a duplex. Certainly not the person who would have been tops on his list to help out, but Thom could at least establish what was wrong. He hurried over to the bent-double man, setting his right hand, his crutch-free hand, on Taro's shoulder and making as if to pull him straight. That is, until he noticed the blood strewn pile of teeth on the ground and froze where he was. Taro was changing.

He had time to register another presence, to look up and feel a moment of seering anger as he saw Thom standing there, touching him, even to gurgle an inarticulate sound towards him. It was probably meant to be a surly growl, but sounded more of a frightened whimper.
And then a whole new pain blossomed over his skin. At first it was just an uncomfortable itch that quickly grew into an uncomfortable pain, like someone pressing a dull needle against your skin. All over, it felt as though something was bristling beneath his flesh and then...
"AH!" Taro's eyes widened as he felt the distinct pinch and then tear of skin breaking, it seemed as though entire chunks of his flesh were being torn to shreds. Blood trickled into his eyes as sharp spines, sharp as daggers, tore from his forehead, the bridge of his nose, cheeks, chin. He took a rattling breath only to realease it again in a scream far different from the one before. It'd been fear before.
It was agonzing pain now.
It felt like it took forever as the spines began protruding. If Thom watched carefully he might notice that the tips seemed to just poke slowly out at first before shooting outward, sending small spatters of blood in their wake. All over his body, even his shoulder where Thom was holding him.
Taro began to writhe in desperation and fear, swaying dangerously close to Thom, what was ha... what was... what...
His whole body shuddered and he stumbled forward, looking down for the first time to see the dusgusting twist of his toes and feet as well. He'd forgotten about them completely, they'd gone numb.
His eyelids flickered as though he might faint.

Briefly Thom's eyes met Taro's, but just as quickly the Japanese man was looking away once more, for which Thom was very grateful. He grimaced, momentarily closing his eyes against the sight that had greeted him--blood spilling from a mouth brimming with pointed teeth. And then the screams began anew, and it occurred to Thom that teeth like that likely meant something dangerous, and that he should probably get out of the way in case Taro became violent.
He opened his eyes just as the protruding pins began spreading to Taro's back, and earned himself a handful of spines before he managed to pull away, giving out a startled shout of his own. He backed away a few paces, deciding there was nothing he could do for Taro until he was sure the transformation had ended, and concerned himself instead with the spines in his hand, gingerly giving one a light tug and hissing through his teeth when it refused to budge. Godammit.
