The girl in the sky IS the story. Without it there is no AIR. o.O It's what the series is about and everything comes back to Kanna's curse. All the characters are affected in one way or another by the curse until Yukito basically sets them free. The only one he didn't set free was Misuzu. And he could have done it. When he triggered the doll of unfulfilled wishes he wished to do it all over again rather than wishing to free the girl in the sky and save Misuzu, so he turned into a crow and did it all over again.

The story about the girl in the sky is nice and it's interesting when symbols all come together, but when it comes down to it, the main "story" isn't really saying anything. It's an interesting tale but it isn't saying much (or anything novel.) Deciphering plot and depth are not the same. The good parts of Air, ones that you actually might take something away from and learn something, are the plain, everyday, not supernatural or overly complicated parts-- it's the characters and their interactions with each other, namely Misuzu and her mother, and that other girl and her sister (sorry, I really don't remember too much... It's been awhile.) It would have been nice if the "story" was used to enhance the actual themes of the show, but instead they felt kind of seperate.

Ok so I really don't remember too much about Air so I'm relying just on my pretty crappy memory so I might be wrong, but as a general rule I don't like anime based on dating-sims and I think they try to hard to put meaning into something that was initially meaningless.

o.o; If you think that the "supernatural" elements were seperate from the "normal" ones then you really do need to see it again. Because there is no "normal" storyline without the "supernatural" elements. As I said everything is linked together through the curse. The characters are who they are because of their relation to Kanna's curse. There is nothing "plain" or "ordinary" about any of the characters in AIR. Especially not Misuzu, whose entire life has been dictated by Kanna's curse.

I don't agree with that-- Misuzu and her mother are supposed to represent reality (even though the story is supernatural, they are still the same as real) The girl in the sky story was supposed to help demonstrate the emotions of and interactions of in reality (or I think was supposed to, but didn't, and that's my problem with Air)

The only reason Misuzu was with Haruko was because of the curse, she was forced onto her because she was "weird". The reason why Haruko avoided her was also partly because of the curse. She didn't want to get close to Misuzu because she'd start crying. There was nothing "normal" about their relationship until Yukito left and even that wasn't "normal" as Misuzu ended up losing here memory and experiencing unnatural pains, eventually dying an unnatural death. Their relationship was mimicing a real life situation, but there was little that was realistic about it once you find out about the curse. The only thing realistic was the emotions which were beautifully portrayed. Besides that the series is not realistic in the slightest. From start to finish everything about it's pure fantasy. When I finished watching the series that it reminded me most of was Ayashi No Ceres. Another series where the only thing that's realistic is the human emotions, everything else is pure fantasy with some sci-fi elements in this case.
