thechong_martin xXDrummingBeastXx Well dont rush into a band. Also dont run around going "I play drums!" People hate it when other people brag about how good they are, it makes you sound bad. Plus you dont want to embarass yourself when they acually hear you drum. I made that mistake 10 years ago when I first started gonk As for drumming tips... just play every day. Try to use some sort of ear protection, you dont want to damage your ears. I already get ringing in my ears cry A good thing to practice is working around your set. Just hit each drum twice, alternating around the set and gaining speed. Keep doing that untill it feels natural going around your set. And of course, just practice every day. are you kidding me? being pushed into a band helps so ******** much really motivates you alot to improve unless youre the type that gets emotionally hurt easily... haha of course you'll suck at first, but its a quick way to get better in addition to your practicing It's a bad idea. If you cant keep yourself motivated, you shouldn't be playing that instrument. Bands aren't meant to start the second you pick up an instrument, because it will fail. And failing bands are bad bands.

Only use a metronome if you really need it, because that thing'll make you want to kill yourself after ten minutes. It is a good idea, though, if you find you can't keep a steady rhythm.

If you cant keep yourself motivated, you shouldn't be playing that instrument. Bands aren't meant to start the second you pick up an instrument, because it will fail. And failing bands are bad bands. Well I didn't think he meant the second you pick up an instrument, so you do have to have some preliminary skill but a band does really help (and it doesn't have to be a serious band - it can just cover easy songs to practice). This helped me tremendously. Metronomes DO help..but I find something easier to do is just while listening to music in your room or watching TV to beat a practice pad to it. WAY more fun and easier to stick to smile Padfoot_Prongs_BP make sure you'r ecomfortable with the basic beats. learn rock, jazz, ballad, latin, and bossa (very similar to latin). take drum lessons I never took drum lessons (not that I'm saying they wouldn't help, but it's certainly not necessary). I consider myself now a talented artist, and I credit a large part of this to the fact that I wasn't shaped and molded to a specific form.. I just picked up a set one day and started playing, and seem to have maintained a magnetically unique perspective ever since.

one thing i learnt is to not just work with your better hand, try to be able to do the same stuff with both hands. I had that problem and i could barely do paradiddes after a few months of playing them because my left hand couldn't keep up with my right. confused

yeah work on your rudiments. Jazz is really good to practice, it keeps you loose and creative, really helps you with fills. It's good to have an idol band or something to keep you motivated to push yourself. Do what's comfortable for like 45 minutes, then for 15 push yourself on something hard, you won't get it in the beginning but keep practicing, and that hard stuff will be easy. Then repeat. The first band I started playing to was Linkin Park now I practice playing to Shinedown, since I like the use of snare in the music.

1. Put on headphones. 2. Put your music on shuffle. 3. Play (or try to play) EVERY song that comes up. NO SKIPPING 4. Repeat for hours, days, weeks...hell, if you can get food delivered to you and a bed placed right next to you you're set for life. 5. When you know every single song, get more music. Repeat again.
Basically, no practicing is bad practicing. Technique will get you far, but to play every genre of music over and over again will get you much skill, as you will be learning the drum beats that are the accumulation of the pro drummer's entire playing career. Play everything, rap is not beneath you, country is not beneath you, nothing with drums is beneath you, and it can only make you better. Easy songs are good, they teach tempo and you can work on rhythmic precision over the entire length of the song. This is the best advice I can give that isn't just "go get a teacher" and it's how I taught myself for 5 years before I found my teacher. And how I continue to practice today. Once you have the skills, you can turn the music off and freestyle it. Get into a band, turn nothing down, play every day if you can. Most of all, have fun. When it's not fun to practice (I enjoy practicing every day) it's time to either re-motivate yourself or stop. Good luck!!!
