Getting back to the thread... Like Boadicia said, the current evidence suggests that there will not be a big crunch but of course evidence is constantly re-evaluated. I believe it relied on the openness/closeness of the geometry of the the universe.

The current Big Bang theory gives two possible outcomes for the future: either the universe will continue to expand indefinitely and freeze down when the average temperature of the whole universe will fall down to 0K or it would continue to expand for a while and then reverse itself and start shrinking, ending up with the Big Crunch.
All this depends on the current speed of expansion of the universe and whether or not the Big Bang theory is true in the first place (some scientists are not so sure - there might be some flaws in the theory).
