Belgarion. I just love it in the beginning of the fourth book when he decides to be ruthless.

Belgarion is more humane in character. Sparhawk's more on adult personalities.
But i choose Belgarion since many people can relate to him in many ways mrgreen

For some reason, I think I prefer Garion. Usually Sparhawk would be more my type, but... I'd actually have to say that I like Garion better.

i like sparhawk the best because of the ways he thinks to thwart the enemies plans all the time.... makes me want to read the elenium again lol

I really liked Garion's development from a child into a king, and was quite happy with the end result. He was a bit annoying as a teenager (as are most people, I suppose), in the sense that he tended to view everything as a personal affront, and also didn't really listen to the people around him. However, once he realised the significance of events around him, and began to pay more attention, I found I really liked his character. Unassuming, despite his power, and yet still with a playful immaturity that never gets old.
It's been an age since I read the Elenium, although I remember not minding Sparhawk that much. Garion is still fresher in my mind though, so I will pick him *g*
Hmmm...it really has been too long since I read that series.....I really should start reading it again.....*disappers*

Belgarion is so humble and thoughtful while Sparhawk's ego and irrational diminished his heroism somewhat in my eyes.

Entropic_Angel Hmm Sparhawk is slightly better he is seems slightly darker, and has more depth to him, more expeiranced is more human dark priestess I liked Sparhawk better, he just did what he wanted and wasn't a kid, so didn't need to be led by anyone else. Sparhawk had more character and Garion was just a bit too childish in the Mallorean. Seira_Phim Sparhawk, he seems a bit more realistic to me, he has more depth, and his mistakes are fewer than Garion's, but they tend to land him in bigger trouble. These are my reasons too. (I like Sparhawk better, obviously)

Sparhawk by about ten country miles. Don't get me wrong, I find Garion lovely and huggable most of the time (except when he's acting like a moron or a d**k, but we all have our moments), and he can be really funny, but he's a goddamn genre standard! At least Sparhawk was marginally original.
Also, I like grizzled old veterans. Further, the whole 'inexperienced person is in over their head and must come into their own' thing is done way more often than the 'smart, tough, seasoned badass realizes that this s**t is just too real' that you find in the Elenium.
Which leads me to what really gets me about Sparhawk: his hidden qualities. He thinks so lyrically, and is so genuine and loving; and you have to actually see through something to appreciate it. Of course, Garion sort of does the reverse, and that's what makes me love him instead of read him and forget him like I have so many clueless white farmboys in "Engl-- I mean Middle Ea-- I mean Krynn." generic fantasy worlds, but still. I've always liked the hero's cool friends better than him, and in any other book, Sparhawk would be one of the hero's friends. Just letting him have center stage is innovative for a swords 'n' sorcery novel.
