I, of course, suggest The Dark Tower series by Stevie Wonder. No wait, he's the singer. Steven King. Yuppy doodles. xd

*warbles* You are the sunshine of my liiife...

Yanno, some guy stole my copy of The Magicians of Caprona AND a substantial amount of money from me. He claims to be keeping them in a safe in Jersey, but... stare I want them back. Preferably before I go to Deutschland. Preferably with interest.

I should bug him through Gaia until I repossess what is rightfully mine.

I need to ask a potentially foolish question... I know you can call the part of city where offices and government buildings are "downtown" or the "business district". However, what would be the easiest way to differentiate between that place and where the bars and restuarants are?

I've got two scenes in a story, one taking place near and then inside a bar - where it's quiet because it's too early in the day to drink. However, the next scene is outside a government building and I'm trying to contrast the amount activity. "Where activity near the bar had yet to pick up for the day, people were already bustling downtown."... or something like it was what I had in mind. But I don't like writing "near the bar".

Please help?

Aw, geez, now I wish I remembered what they called the parts of Lindblum in FFIX. There was the Theatre District, the Business District, and the...Industrial District?

...Okay, I'm no help at all. Call me when you need some information on poison.

That's more helpful than you know, by friend! Thanks!

I think the seedy part of town with all the lowlifes, bars, and bums is colorfully referred to as the "Red Light District". But if it's a city like New Orleans, it's the "French Quarter". So make up a colorful name for it. smile

Thanks, Charlie. The city I'm working with hasn't shown it's seedier underbelly yet, so I have some time before I need to name the Red Light District. xd

Here's another question... I've got a character who's experiencing a major career change. Specifically, he's going from being a stablehand to being a lord. There are political reasons for the sudden change - he's basically caught in the middle of a dispute over who the next lord of a region should be. The present lord picked him because he's a very distant relative and he desperately needed an heir. He has strong negative feelings about the person who wants to be his heir, so he needed to dig up a relative to keep that guy from inheriting the title.

Anyway, the stablehand turned heir now needs to learn how to be a "proper" lord. I know he will have to learn a lot - right now he's able to read and write in his native language and speak his native tongue fluently. He's also understandable in two other language - but can't read or write either of those. He knows very basic math (arithmetic) and how to use a hunting bow, a staff and a sword. He also knows some court protocol, since he had been in training as a servant for the governor.

My question: What would they need to teach him? Some I can guess at already - local history, politics, who the major players are and how to address them, how to read and write (and speak more eloquently) in the language of his new home... but what else does he need to know?

Diction and public speaking... that's speaking more eloquently. I know the character you're talking about well enough to say: he needs to learn tact. That's part of diplomacy. You can't just say what's on your mind as a lord, where you can as a farmer. (And he does. ^^)

There's also how to carry yourself (poise, grace) and dancing too. A lord can't galumph around the palace and he can't be a wallflower, where again, a farmer can. Maybe posture too, you know that whole walk with books on your head thing. (I know they show it with girls in all the shows, but really lords were expected to be just as graceful.)

I think hlltwin pretty much named everything I was thinking of.

Your character will have to learn all the proper bows appropriate to people of various stations. 3nodding

Hmm, okay. I've had this idea for a while, and I was wondering what you all thought about it.

I have certain characters that, nomatter how many stories they're in or how many times their stories die, they just stay with me. Namely, they're my random mage, D.C.; my scrappy vagabond, Strider; and my blind mage/bard/juggler Orae. I've had the idea for some time that, just for the sake of their apparent tendency toward immortality, I should insert them as minor cameos in my current story (and perhaps in later stories, too). Either their names would never be mentioned or they would have different-yet-similar names every time, but their descriptions would always be the same.

Kind of like the Eternal Romance of Ana and Dann, the two Generic Minor Characters who appear in nearly every story my friend Navenna and I have ever written.

For instance: Strider's cameo would come as an old friend of Yinda's whom she runs into on the street. His name here would be his last name, Derebel, or "Dere" for short. His cameo would last less than a chapter, as Yinda would lose him in the crowd as soon as the action picked up.

For Orae, he would take the part of a blind bard sitting on the steps of the Emanon temple, singing the Ballad of the Nameless Mage (another cameo I intend to keep up; in my old story there was a popular book called "The Travels of the Nameless Mage"). His name would not be mentioned, only his description. The secret joke behind it is that he sort of is the Nameless Mage (if you ignore the fact that I named him). This would also leave room for Nathan to comment that he has always felt he rather connects with the Nameless Mage (being a mage and not knowing the name his biological parents gave him).

D.C. hasn't really come up for a cameo in this story yet, but he could be one of Nathan's old classmates or even a former lover. xd I always suspected while writing my previous story that D.C. seemed a bit bent. wink

Blah, I'm really rambling now. But yeah. What do you guys think of character cameos?

Character cameos are automatic win, in my opinion. xd They're (well, if they're done correctly and subtly) fun little gems to find and be all LOLTHATSKEWL.

Heres an idea for a character background I'm working on, wouldn't mind some feedback ^_^

And yes, I posted it in the profile crit section, but no one goes there, so shameless plug >.>

Alright cookies, I need some help. -_-;;

I'd been tossing around the idea for a world that would be the setting of one of my stories for awhile -- *Tips hat to the person with the Mysterious Egg idea, which owns by the way XD* -- and while I've got a vague idea of the characters and plot, I think I'd like to get the kinks worked out of the world's mechanics first.

Basically, the story will center on just a small section of the world (at this time, anyway), what used to be the royal capital.

Plot Issue #1 -- For some reason, the world is stuck in time. The trouble started at dusk one summer day (it was partly cloudy, and still is XD) when a sort of flash-freeze took the world. Those (if any) of you who remember the Red Carousel will remember my perpetually-frozen, otherwise-summery world -- this is it.

Now, WHY the world is stuck and why the people AREN'T -- is a tad beyond me. Should I need to elaborate? gonk

Plot Issue #2 -- NOTHING moves in this world. Natural elements like clouds, etc, are stuck. Living things to the tune of people and animals aren't stuck (except for fish XD) -- but no water, no wind...NOTHING moves.

Meaning, if you step on the frozen grass, it won't give way beneath you and you'll end up with a foot full of annoying little spikes. o_O; Stick to the roads, people! >XD

Now, here's the issue -- while most people can't do crap about this, there are some people in the world who CAN move things, but temporarily. One of these steps into a river and the water around them will move until they get out. Etc Etc.

I figured that the rich people who couldn't do it for themselves would hire these people to help them...well, move things. One of my original ideas was that you needed one of them to open doors for you, things like that, so only the rich had doors because they were the only ones that could afford to hire these people. XD

Here's where I ran into my second problem--

SURELY people have to be able to do some things for themselves -- pick up small items, and the like. But if DOORS are stuck too, where should I draw the line in classifying what the average person can and cannot change? gonk MAJOR help needed on this one.

And my last--

Plot Issue #3 -- I decided on another difference between those who can alter things, and those who can't. People who can't change their surroundings, can, themselves, be changed. They can keep lose limbs, die, etc. However, those who CAN alter the world, can't be changed. You could stab the living hell out of an Alterer and they'll just keep getting better and progressively more and more angry with you. xd

Is this okay, or should I scrap/rethink it?

Help appreciated. DDDX

That sounds like an awesome idea, in my opinion. Just think of the monopoly that could be held over water alone!

Unfortunately...the above is the only thought I've had so far on the matter. sweatdrop Sorry I'm not more helpful.

Well, hey, maybe the world-freezy-thing could be, like, a spell gone wrong. Yeah, like, this wizard was trying to make ice cream, right? And he sneezed in the middle of the freezing spell and BAM. Flahsfroze the whole planet, yo.

...I should probably sleep sometime soon, if that's the best idea I can come up with. ;.;
