No, you really are mistaken. Before Lolita, the word had no meaning except as a girl's name. So it's no coincidence.

And I never said you did say that. xd But you did say that Lolita fashion is about dressing like the Victorian or Rococo eras, when the word Lolita itself has nothing to do with that and so must refer to something else within the fashion.

It is! Do you read "Girl Genius"? It's a steampunk webcomic that is freaking awesome. And I def want a steampunk keyboard someday. 3nodding

I was never talking about it as the name! Just the book and the fashion and that was the coincidence. I was mistaken, before all of that it was just a nickname.

It is a fashion that is inspired by those eras, not dressing exactly like you stepped out of the 1800's. So, yes. Exactly. xD

No, I haven't but I will look it up :3 I regularly check The Steampunk Workshop though, he does a lot of different projects and also shows off projects other people did. He has even made a steampunk computer-- including a keyboard!

Yeah, I'm a big fan of his work. 3nodding There's actually an interview of Phil Foglio, the writer of Girl Genius, on there last I checked

I know this is old, but as a Lolita I feel the need to comment. Just as an introduction, I have been heavily into this fashion for over 6 years, so I have an idea what I am talking about.

You may think that it isn't a coincidence, but it is. The lolita fashion actually stresses not being sexual as a major point. The name comes from the fascination Japan has with taking English words and slapping them on things to make them sound/look cool. [For instance, I once found a shirt that said "All the with flavors of being a girl"] It's very much the same principle as non-Japanese cultures slapping kanji tattoos on, when they have no earthly idea what they really mean.

With this occuring, horrible concidences are going to happen. Perhaps Mana just thought Lolita meant girl. Perhaps he liked the way it sounded. Perhaps he just knew it was a classic. Whatever the reason, Lolita is not supposed to represent sexualized little girls in any way, shape, or fashion. Actually, some of the key designers have said they design how they would want their women to be; sweet, modest, and beautiful. Considering the Japanese gender roles for women, this is not surprising.

I'm not saying it's meant to be sexual, exactly, but it can't be a coincidence. Lolita has come to mean attractive young person. In fact, my only knowledge of lolita comes from Japanese culture and what little I know about the book.

Also, fashions are always about looking attractive. Even if you don't think of yourself as being sexually attractive, that's part of the point; To appeal to the eye of the beholder.
