I said wolves were carnivores, which dogs desended from. I've had dogs in the past, and I know that several dog foods come with peas, carrots, rice, and lots of other non-meat products in their food. However, I think it's important that dogs get their protein, regardless if they can live with it or not. I don't think they should be on a strictly carnivorous diet, but their ancestors ate meat. Like mentioned earlier, your pets do not have a choice to be vegan or vegetarian, they depend on their owners to take care of them. I understand the change for health reasons, but why deny them the food they love because of a decision we make on their part? You all make good points, but I still stand by mine.

As for cats, there is a certain chemical or something that they require for eyesight. Old ladies who feed their cats nothing but tuna will find their cats getting cataracts before they turn four. Cats need what's in those canned foods for them.

I worry about what sort of "meat" goes into dog food. sweatdrop

Yep, if you wanna know, they put in all the stuff that's deemed unfit for human consumption, such as diseased animals, animals that died before making it to the slaughterhouse, and all the extra parts like brains/feet/other organs/etc.

Personally, I think veg*n dog food is kind of crazy. My dog's food is made of chicken and rice, and I don't really have a problem with it, because dogs can't really decide to go veg*n. It's kind of like forcing it upon them.

I think I'm going to order some of this dog and cat food and feed it to my pets along with their regular meals to see if they like it. 3nodding

If they do like it, I could always feed it on the side to reduce their meat consumption.

My poodle greatly prefers meat to everything else. Of course, poodles were originally bred as hunting dogs (thus the name, derived from "puddle"--they were water dogs).

My Lab, though...is weird, compared to other dogs I've had. He'll turn down a steak bone WITH BITS OF MEAT LEFT ON IT in favor of a potato skin. Shadow would much rather DIG UP his own sweet potatoes than eat a hamburger that's fallen off the grill.

I saw an article in Reader's Digest that said that dogs can live healthily on vegan dog food, but so far, nobody has been able to make a a vegan cat food that cats can live on healthily. So you could go ahead and feed your dog vegan food, but if you have a cat, I would keep feeding it normal cat food.

I have a vegetarian cat, because when he was a kitten he made the decision to turn vege - I would wake up and find him in the kitchen muching on lettuce and beets that he stole from the compost bin. So we did a test - we layed out a greek salad and some cooked pet mince (what we regularly fed him) and he went for the salad - obviously my cat. He is now six-seven months old and has always been a rather spaco cat, he is unfriendly, often violent, and very independant. I don't think this is typical of cats however.

Our dog, although she enjoys fruit, still eats meat daily and I think she would be sad if we changed her diet and forced her.

I wouldn't want to chance altering my cat's health and making them unhappy just because of my eating habits. That's cruel to do to pets, it's your choice to be vegetarian, not the pet's.

So I was in an organic food co-op the other day and stumbled across some vegetarian dog food. My jaw hanging open, I looked to make sure I was reading it correctly. Yep. Vegetarian dog food for the non-breeding adult dog. Using no animal meat whatsoever. I had heard of it before, but to actually see it was another thing.

I got to thinking. Aren't dog descended down from wolves, which are for a fact carnivores? Don't they have to eat meat? I quickly became annoyed and moved on. I've thought about it for a while, though, and wondered if someone who is vegan or vegetarian and owns a pet, do they do the same to their pet to feed their radical no meat lifestyle? I don't mind if people don't eat meat, but our pets need it.

My question is: what do you think, even if you don't have a pet?

It is possible to keep a dog on a vegetarian diet. I'm pretty sure eggs still have to be in there for protein, but its possible.

Cats, on the other hand, CANNOT be put on a vegetarian diet. I'm not sure why, but I read about it in "Being Vegetarian for Dummies". For some reason, cats NEED animal protein in their diet, but dogs don't. I don't know why someone would force their beliefs on their pet, but if you have a dog, I guess you can and its not unhealthy.

My kitties absolutely LOVE tuna and chicken (my mom cooks it, not me). I always thought our oldest cat, Midnight, was a bit strange, because she REALLY likes greens and crackers, and our male cat, Zach, likes cantelope and honeydew confused Go figure.

Canines are in the order Carnivora but based on their feeding behaviors they are omnivores. They are put into that classification along with many other animals some of which are herbivores. They have a preferred taste for things that are sweet. That is why you might find a dog chowing on a carrot, apple, or sweet potato. My Beagle got into an Easter basket one year and took out all the lollipops, unwrapped them, ate the candy and then left the wrappers and sticks all over the floor.

Cats are strictly carnivores because there are certain nutrients that their bodies cannot make on their own, like vitamin A. The nutrients from plants, they cannot break down and digest so they need to take it from an animal who can. Its like depriving a human of all vitamin C, which we must get from food. We will become sick and may die without it.

this may be off the topic but Diamond Pet Food this year recalled pet food with potentially life threatening toxins in it. So far I have seen my cat mysteriously and painfully die within hours of eating a food I had bought. Also the place where I worked served the boarding dogs Kirkland dog food. One dog died. The ingredients in the food were corn and wheat that had a toxic fungus on it. I don't know if they got all of the food problems resolved or not but I hurt everyday I think of me holding my cat like a baby and seeing the pain in his eyes. This should never happen!

Dog Food Warning

From 18/01/06 Life's Abundance Foods:
Quote:
" Most likely, you have heard about the tragic situation in the news recently. At least 100 dogs nationwide died as a result of eating contaminated pet food from a well-known pet food company. This company has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food in 23 states. The toxin comes from a fungus found on corn and other crops and can cause severe liver damage in pets. Unfortunately, this terrible tragedy has not ended yet - more dogs are showing symptoms of the toxin.

This is an extremely difficult time and our hearts go out to the families of those dogs that have died. As you know, our pets are our family and the loss of a dog or cat is just as painful as the loss of a family member.

That is why I want to assure you that your pet is not in any danger eating any of our HealthyPetNet foods. As a veterinarian and formulator, I am aware of how the aflatoxin mold attaches itself to corn and other crops. That is why we have never used corn or wheat in our foods and we never will. Of equal importance is our quality control program, which is designed to keep our pet foods safe. "
