“Careful.” Ephrym had moved just in time to catch Chrysanthe, her petite body fitting perfectly against his surprisingly more solid frame. The swordsman reached to tap a few jars back into position before picking up the one he had been looking for. “Are you alright?” He asked, his arm still wrapped around Chrysanthe as he had been using his free hand to navigate the shelf for the sealant. Despite her fiery temper it seemed that he hadn’t been set on fire for simply touching the golden spark, something which amused Ephrym even though he was somewhat startled by the way that his own heart skipped a beat when she looked up at him. She was so close and they were pressed tightly together against the shelves, her face barely a breath away from his own. It honestly made Ephrym freeze as he studied her in surprise.

“I’m fine.” Chrysanthe managed in a soft whisper. She was just as frozen as Ephrym and for a second she just found herself studying him in turn. He had protected her and it was just now that she noticed one of the shelves had fallen forward, his body acting as a shield for them both. How had he just casually reached up for a jar while keeping them both from being crushed? Silly man. Chrysanthe frowned before finally moving, her hands shoving against the smaller shelf and pushing it back against the opposite wall. “Looks like those ropes are frayed.” She commented, her heart racing despite her attempt to be calm. For a second she thought that they were almost going to….kiss? That would have been reckless, but surprisingly the thought didn’t actually disgust Chrysanthe. What would it be like if they had kissed? Don’t be silly, Chrys.

Damn. Ephrym was finding it very hard to behave whenever Chrysanthe looked at him like that. She had seemed so flushed, so interested in him that the man’s heart had raced a little bit there. But he was not one to make assumptions and so he kept still until she finally spoke. “Frayed? Yeah…I think so.” He managed with a wry smile before shoving backwards to free them from the shelves. Thankfully there were mostly boxes and lighter objects on that one so it didn’t hurt him as much as it could have upon impact.
“Well we have our jar of sealant and now we just need to pick up a few things that spilled.” Ephrym rotated his shoulder with a slight wince before bending down to pick up scattered teabags, placing them back into a box and onto the shelf again. That had been a bit of a rougher wave, but it didn’t seem like anything was amiss with the Misty Maiden else the crew would have made a lot more noise. “Can you hand me those parchments over there? We can’t afford to let them get damaged since they’ll be important for mapping out the new area.” Ephrym was already working on tying the shelving back against the wall as he spoke, his gaze focused to keep his mind from wandering back towards Chrysanthe and their moment.

Chrysanthe’s lips pressed tightly together as she kept her questions to herself. What was the point? Ephrym would probably come back with some flirty comment or something ridiculous even if she had tried to approach things. Whatever tension had been building between them the last few weeks together she had brushed off as the captain’s shenanigans, but that moment had really….you’re just getting lonely, Chrysanthe. Was this why sailors always got into trouble at port? Being out in the ocean made you wonder about certain things and the freedom of traveling across these deep waters made it feel like anything was possible. That was the thrill, right? To live in the moment because you never knew where life would take you or conclude for you? The dangers of the ocean, the beauty of it, the adventures it offered, and so much more that even Chrysanthe found herself getting caught up in it lately.
“I’ll go ahead and take the sealant to repair the ropes.” She offered while holding out her hand for the jar. “I can handle that much so that you can go check on the rest of the crew.” Perhaps she was running away from him but Chrysanthe just couldn’t comprehend why this man out of all people would be the one to make her heart race!

Ephrym opened his mouth before closing it again. It was probably best to let the golden spark run away since anything else could lead to more trouble. Handing over the ceramic jar, the man’s gaze lingered on the doorway as Chrysanthe disappeared from sight and left him alone. It would just be a passing attraction, spirits knew that he would constantly flirt around with others and considered new things the most interesting. There was just something about the other continents that truly intrigued Ephrym and he could find more thrills with someone feisty, someone who always spoke their mind and even shot bolts to defend their position against anyone no matter what. So why did his heart seem to ache whenever she turned away from him like that? Maybe they had spent a bit too much time together on land before this voyage. He shouldn’t be so fascinated with someone even if they were truly a fascinating person indeed, right?
“You’re a fool, Ephrym.” The captain quipped to himself before turning back to finish taking care of the mess in the storage room.
