The Circus Life
(Growth Solo) [Vaena is adjusting to life in the Matori circus. She’s never been around so many outsiders and has to adjust her views on non-yaeli now that she’s been accepted into Cirque Sirene.]
Vaena could feel her face twisting into a grimace of sorts as she watched those around her cavort through the circus grounds. She had always been for lack of better words a grouch about most aspects of life and now that she was living in Matori it was no different, though she was trying her best.
She had moved into Cirque Sirene almost a month ago now, and life had been… different. She couldn’t make heads or tails of the life she had stumbled into and let Zaeryn convince her was what she was looking for. She shot a look over to the tall, lanky hybrid. He was mingling with Nedelle, the ring leader’s daughter. Vaena and herself had some things in common. Nedelle was half yaeli, though where her father was, Vaena didn’t know. It was probably one of the only things that made her feel a little more at ease in the tents and spotlights of the circus. The familiarity of purple and grays. Though that was about as familiar as it got. Nedelle was raised in the flamboyant circus lifestyle, and it was something Vaena was still trying to stomach after her strict, rigid yaeli upbringing.
There were bad fortunes all over this place if she looked hard enough. But she couldn’t stay isolated forever, and she was working on her ‘friendly face’. Jisena had coached her on being more welcoming toward the others in the circus, and Vaena supposed she wouldn’t get very far if she didn’t at least accept those she was living with now.
Vaena spun on her heels and made her way back towards her own tent. Zaeryn was right about one thing though, the work was interesting. She could feel her interest pique with every new wardrobe change. It all needed glitter and jewels to really make them pop in the lights of the high top. She had gotten a crash course into working with fabrics to be able to make sure the jewelry stayed where it was supposed to and she was living for her work.
She supposed the needs of the circus and the challenge of their outfits and spectacle made it worth the outsiders she had put herself around. Though she supposed she couldn’t really call them outsiders anymore. That was her title now.
The idea of being the outsider had Vaena crawling in her skin, but she supposed with enough time she would get used to it. Maybe even stop thinking of it as her versus them, and think of it more as her own dysfunctional family unit.
Without realizing it, she supposed she had already started to adjust to life in Matori. She didn’t feel quite so taken aback at the amalgamation that made up the group, and she found herself venturing more and more out into the communal areas during regular life in the camp, as opposed to showtime. They joked that they would find her act yet, but Vaena knew without a doubt that she would never be a performer, that wasn’t her life. But behind the scenes, she supposed she could handle that.
