"Um," said Heliodora, looking at the finicky, wavering light in Shun's palm. It was barely bright enough to qualify as light at all. "That's a good start. But you need to build it out more. Like, um. Is it candle light? Fluorescent light? Maybe you need to go home and like, really study the kind of light you want? Like an LED flashlight or one of those heavy ones cops have?"

Without saying anything, Shun began to adjust the light as per Heliodora's suggestions. More details. He furrowed his brow as he started to flesh it out. He didn't want something so powerful that it'd blind them looking into it. Perhaps something along the lines of what an old 40w lightbulb could produce. Something that gave off a little bit of warmth as well.

Heliodora smiled. "That's much better! See, you're getting it. Does it make any sound, Mr. Kuroda?"

Shun considered that for a moment. Once he had decided, a very faint, low hum, began to emanate from the orb.

"Like that?"

The orb of light was now shining brightly in Shun's hand. Heliodora clapped, dropping her knitting needles into her lap. "Yeah! Just like that! You're getting hte hang of it now." She grinned up at the detective. "Now put it away and do it again."

He looked down at the orb briefly, then closed his fist, dismissing the light.

"Alright, I think I got it..." he murmured, moreso to himself than to Heliodora. After a pause, he went ahead and reopened his hand and began to focus, going over each of the details he had decided on moments ago. It was the sort of light he wanted to summon right now. He could attempt to change it later on, but it was best to keep with this for the time being.

"Beautiful," said Heliodora, grinning now. "See? You've got it. Now... that's basically the process for learning any new spell. You just need to associate that process of creation with a word, like... I guess 'light' would be a good one for this one."

Shun went ahead and dismissed the light again, since he didn't really need it right this moment.

"Is a verbal component always needed? Outloud... anyway? Or can it be silent?"

"It can be silent," said Heliodora, "but you do need some kind of trigger. I like hearing the word. But maybe you could just think it, or gesture?"

"Right. I shall have to keep that in mind," he nodded. He could work with something like that.

"Are there any other tips that you would not mind sharing? Things I should avoid, perhaps?"

"Don't shapeshift unless you know exactly what you looked like before," said Heliodora immediately. "Or you're gonna come out looking like Picasso. Don't shapeshift and cross over to the other side. Or you're gonna get stuck and die because you won't have any internal organs cuz you didn't imagine yourself having any. If you can't think of all the ways a spell might go wrong don't cast it, because magic is a b***h and will do whatever it wants if you're not careful."

She fixed Shun with a stare. "I'm serious about the shapeshifting thing. I mean, do it. Just don't go back over until you're people again."

That was a mildly horrifying thing to imagine. Someone must have experienced that before, given how quickly she had responded.

"Duly noted. I cannot say I was really planning on attempting to shapeshift, but it is good to know, nonetheless."

The other word of caution for what to not attempt was useful as well. It basically boiled down to being absolutely certain of what he was doing, and having as many of the details as possible. It meant he was going to need to figure s**t out ahead of time, at least at the start.

"I think I got it now, for the most part. Thank you, Heliodora," he nodded, "Is there anything you would like, should I return here in the future?"

"Cupcakes," said Heliodora. "I want three cupcakes. Yellow cupcakes. With the crappy whipped-cream icing."

She was dead serious.

Shun hoped that she'd request something that wasn't perishable, just due to the fact that he had no clue when he would be able to come by here next. This just meant he was going to need to do some Other Ashdown hunting once he had the cupcakes.

He was, after all, a man of his word.

"Very well. Next time I come here, I will have the cupcakes for you. Until then... take care."

shibrogane
Cupcakes 4 heliodora in future. But thanks for rp!
