He took a seat and stared at the offered pie, unmistakeable in its smell. Apple. The Irony was not lost on him and he had to remind himself of the time, place, and that this was pie.
"Thank you. I do usually appreciate pie of this nature. " Bit to be sure, he moved the plate forward and only lightly brushed a fingertip against the crust. Inwardly he sighed at it wasn't store bought and thawed out. It was a needed blessing for his nerves.
"I do hope no interfering will happen If you would be so merciful."
He turned to Rodney, trying to keep his attention on both of them as best he could while not placing the his full focus on the demon. "More of a general census and update on the coming and goings of the city. I don't suppose you have heard anything that might be happening. If like to be aware of what I should be aware of considering my recent station here. I haven't been to Appleton before."
He looked back to Lawr. "I hope it's not too presumptuous of me to ask the same for you if you would be willing to share. I also appologize since I did not introduce myself and get your name. Melvin."
He picked up his fork.

Lawr's pale blue eyes flitted to Rodney and he smiled brightly. "I am glad you don't mind, I didn't want to ruin your peace here."
He was already cutting himself a slice of blueberry, showing an unnerving level of control with the knife he was using, the blade seeming much much sharper than it should have been in his hands.
He tucked into it like the others with open satisfaction "Lawrence." he said. "And I have seen a lot of things, none of them right now though. Other than pies." He wiped his mouth. "Nothing happens here. Less than the usual nothing. Is Rodney in trouble?"

"Oh no, I'm sure, as I've said, just a standard...seeing what's going on. And a visit. It's not a um, contested territory. Especially. So...well, reports, you have been getting them? But of course, I'll review. The h-harvest rates are typical. No um, plagues, or disasters, or mass causalities. I know there are official recommendations for err, trial, to strengthen the resolve and bonding of the community, so, of course there's been, you know, the standard sort of testing," Rodney looked almost like he was about to be in trouble. "There was a fire at the beginning of the year," he grasped, as if this was the sort of thing that was expected. He rushed through quickly, "everyone made it out, but they were very tested. Even without...injuries...there was, you know, some coughing. Donations exceeded the expected amount, so the spare went to, ah, the specialty burn unit. You know, just to ease pain, not to...interfere with err, numbers...Which, I know, could be up, but..."
Appleton's longevity, and the age of its older population, was also a hedge higher than normal.

Melvin had to stop a moment, mind pulled back away from looking at Lawrence to Rodney as he went on a sort of history of Appleton's strange good fortunes and general lack of anything disastrous happening. It was one thing for fires to be quelled by angels like him when things went array, but to have the general human populace have it better than most struck a chord.
He couldn't help but instinctively reach for his phone and open a document before he caught himself and, slowly, set it face down on the table. His hand laid on it, a thumb rubbing the side before he removed it and picked up his fork.
"That is very unusual. I haven't had a chance yet to look at the official numbers yet on harvesting, but I did notice the crime was lower than most.
"A fire with no injuries is exceedingly fortunate." He commented and looked at Rodney for a long moment before taking a bite of pie. It was nice, as far as food went, well made, though it didn't have the same strong degree of care and attention some others he had before and tried. The waitress brought him his coffee and he glanced at it, looking out and noticing the automatic drip coffee maker out in the corner of his eye. Unfortunate. He at least wished percolators would make a comeback.
His attention flashed to Lawrence a moment. "Nothing happening here would be strange. I don't see a reason he should be in trouble unless there was a reason." He looked back at Rodney.

Lawrence listened to Rodney squirm with just a bit of satisfaction. It was obvious to him how subtly the entire town had been slanted towards good with people living in something akin to a time bubble of goodness and well meaning with their lives naturally reinforcing the good and discouraging the bad. He'd wondered how much LIFE the place was worth if it was wiped out and if Rodney's job was that of a farmer, growing up the humans nice and strong ripe for harvest.
"It's good that people were all right." he said sweetly. The pie was nice but nothing ever really hit the spot properly.
"I don't know much about heaven." he said. "But seems to me they'd be happy with this place, strange that there aren't more demons though, everyone knows the best tasting SIN is squeezed out of good people turned bad."

"There shouldn't be!" Rodney said. "Any trouble, I mean. Oh, a few of those have visited too, rarely, like I said I um, don't get many visitors, but it's always nice to see a friendly face. Whatever their um, origin. And it's not as if the area is without its roguish sorts."
He looked surprised at Lawrence's assertion.
"Is that true, does that really matter?"

He shivered at the mention of squeezing out SIN, but turned to him to address him fully. "It is true. You are very obseravant to pick that out so quickly and easily."
"I cannot say. A city containing a large populace with incredible luck in their favor could be seen as a target for harvesting from the opposing fraction especially when there isn't a great deal of foot traffic to keep anyone from monitoring anything suspicious. It's why I'm concerned, but that doesn't mean it's warranted. I just need to collect information. Appropriate action won't be taken for some time as I'm just in the beginning stages of data collection. I'm sure after all this time that there isn't any need to pull anyone else here." He said, not feeling as if he was entirely lying to the Angel. No one was needed yet because he hadn't seen the demon beside him do anything and no actions would be taken if things continued on their way, which might be for some time. There would t be need for concern of things remained as they currently were, though he knew they probably would not. It was best to make the demon think he was looking elsewhere and harmless in just looking at the city and not placing himself around Rodney in order to track him.
He looked to them, setting the fork down.
"Would it be possible to request your help as a guide? Like you said, there aren't many of us stationed here and none that stay for a extended period of time that could contest with your expertise to the area? It would only be for simple observation in the city when necessary and starting out as I assume a station here. I hope that I can return the favor once I'm settled fully into my position."
He looked about. "I can see why anyone would want to stay here. It's such a nice city. I would hate for anything to disturb the gentle peace it enjoys. I want to work hard to preserve it."
And this was no lie.

Lawrence found himself once again uselessly reaching back into the shattered shards of his memories, glancing over glimpses of Appleton which did not link back to his own experience at the moment and memories far beyond even that. Nothing made any sense and fiction and reality bled into one another without logic to keep them apart. He didn’t know exactly who he’d been before or what had brought him here. All he could gather was that there had been mirrors and that he was ostensibly very old. It had taken sensible deduction to even realise that he was a demon at all.
Doubt clouded his features at Rodney’s question. “I don’t know.” He admitted weakly, looking somewhat distressed by the fact that he could find no solid bedrock of fact to stand upon. “It just seemed to make sense at the time” And it had, he was sure, or as sure as he could get, but now it was gone, sunken below the ocean of detritus his mind had become. “Probably.”
Melvin got a curious look as he spoke, saying that he was collecting information but something in Lawrence’s gut telling him it was a lie of omission to say that this was to do with the city. Sins had a certain taste to them he thought and it made him pay much more rapt attention to the blonde angel, a very fixed sort of attention, like a cat watching a bird.
He didn’t like the idea of Melvin following them around, naturally very jealous (it was his patron vice, he was sure of that) and the thought of Rodney being a guide to the other man was enough to get his hackles up. It wasn’t all right but he couldn’t yet articulate a valid reason why. Rodney wouldn't approve of him being rude to their guest and that was enough to halt him from doing it.
“He’s not here observing the city.” He said coldly instead, it was more a guess than anything solid he could verify the way he used to. "It's more than that."

"Well, I'm sure you'll have a good time while you're here. I'll help however I can." Rodney looked at Lawrence and sighed, "Does it have to do with his visiting? I'm alright here, everyone's...alright. I'd call right away if there was trouble."

Observant He only expectrf to deal with reflection but it was more like a magnifying glass to have the demon stare him down and hint on something more. "Pardon?"
He startled a bit at the question but have a nervous smiled nonetheless, rubbing the back of his neck. "I actually didn't want to be too forward and to not be insulting or get any wrong ideas, but now that you bring it up. I was wondering. It is a bit concerning whenever a angel is seen enjoying the company of demons. I'm sure it must be the other way around for you too. Not that both of you have been nothing but kind and civil to me. Keeping tabs on a city also means it's other residents, but that I'm not naturally curious about how you two met."
He only finally pushed to do this and already he was found out. The most he could do was make his own questioning seem reasonable and harmless, and not a direct order.
"I'm sure you would have called if there was trouble, which seems to be a rare occurance."

Lawrence smiled politely at being mentioned and inclined his forkful of pie at Melvin. It was surprising how much he could eat while seeming to never get any fatter. The pie was nice, but it didn't take the edge off the want that dogged him relentlessly.
"We are dating." he said, with a smirk, just trying to annoy Melvin who seemed to be implying that he perhaps shouldn't be there. "But don't worry, I'm barely a demon, I don't remember anything about who I am or was. No trouble here, not at all."

"Well, um, I just believe...different diets don't necessarily make for, hostilities, necessarily. I think...it's rather a matter of individuals, so, I try not to leap to any conclusions, where all that is concerned. It's, as I said, a little isolated here so, I don't snub any variety of company. ...And, yes, I think...Lawrence wanted to get away from things, for a little while, so, I don't mind at all. It's...quiet, here, so if he wanted a little quiet..."
Rodney flushed.
"And, yes, that was...a mutual decision to try um, it's a human concept, you know, I've been down here, like I said, a while, but we both thought we might get to know each other better. Since, that's nothing either of us have tried. ...He's been very civil. He hasn't even been doing any tempting."

Melvin just stared.
Somewhere he could hear a radio in the kitchen playing music while a car drove down the street.
His mind went through his notes and observations. Spending all there time together. Staying together. Every moment in each othet's company.
His eyes slowly fell to the table where they sat across from each other enjoying pie and it clicked.
His seat shot back as he shot up. "You're on a date!" He realized.
"I - I interrupted your date?!"

Lawrence was pleased all around with the reaction his comment got from everyone present. Rodney hurrying to openly defend demons and why he wouldn't snub them or push them away in a satisfying sort of way and even going so far as to give him a simple and ready made excuse. "Yes. All of those things, I needed to get away, to somewhere that was quiet. Quiet is good."
"And absolutely no tempting at all. I mean, other than offering a slice of pie and that's hardly tempting and more generosity." Generosity he hadn't paid for, but the intention was obviously the same.
Melvin got that same self-satisfied sort of grin as the other man shrugged his shoulders. "I don't think it was a date right now." he said. "There'd be more elegant outfits and candlelight, don't worry about it." But at the very least, the second angel's discomfort seemed to set aside his competitive feelings a little and warm him back up to him.

"More of a town tour," Rodney said, looking pink and fiddling with his fingers and looking at Lawrence shyly. "Did you...want to try something like that? With candles?"
