Kaiyla reached into her bag and rummaged through it for a moment. She pulled a flashlight out of her bag and walked over to Eiki. She shined it in his eyes as she moved it, watching his pupils follow and dialate. "There is maximum function of the optical nerves, meaning that the cerebrum and cerebral cortex should be functioning adequately," she said as she pointed the flashlight at the window. "You may be experiencing a perception in the absence of external stimulus that has qualities of real perception. Or you may have a neurotransmitters glutamate and dopamine defect. But, then again, this may just be a diagnosis of involuntary sensory experience vivid enough to be recognised by the patient, yet not to be the result of external stimuli," she concluded.
She looked to Mira looking at her like a psychotic patient in a Mental Ward. "He may just be hallucinating," she mumbled after a moment. She walked to the other side of the room, her back facing the others, and tucked some hair behind her ear. She didn't turn around this time, trying to read what she didn't know. There you go. Now they think you're some sort of freak. They'll just leave you here on your own now. I do this everytime! God dammit!, she yelled in her own head. She frowned and looked through the photographs. She couldn't see any connections with anything going on with the situation at the moment.

Eiki was baffled with that Kaiyla was saying. Nothing made sense until she said he was hallucinating. He let out a scoff, "I know what I saw and it wasn't a hallucination! I know I saw a woman, her name was Yumi, she wanted her diary so we could read it and help us find a way out. I know I saw a girl and her head spun around like an owl!"
The crystal around his wrist seemed to move on it's own and moved towards the window. As if it was pointing out something that he had in fact seen. Eiki became aware of this and raised his arm to watch it pointing like the arrow of a compass. He stood and walked to the window. The instant he got there, he only saw the ball moving in the wind and the crystal seemed to fall into motionlessness once again. He let a frown cross his face as he processed the information. What do decipher that as?
Mira looked at Kaiyla and nodded "Thank you Montgomery" she put a hand on the girls shoulder as a thanks, she then looked to Eiki "If there is a child here, then she needs to be found, and as far as this woman, find her diary then. " she took out her Pistol and grabbed an extra magazine "I am going to scout around, see if there is anything of use, " she then looked to Eiki "You and Montgomery need to stick together. " she then head for the door.
Mira was never one to shy away from being alone, she however saw Eiki head for the window and rose a brow, she waited to see what he was doing, and what as with his bracelet. Mira quickly put the gun away and grabbed her sketchbook, she had a thought, since she felt she shouldn't leave them alone she looked to Kaiyla and said "Montgomery are you familiar with Cartography?"
Mira handed her the sketch book as she asked, along with the pencil. "If you are, You and Eiki need to stick with me, and if you can use the map and using and alphanumeric grid work on the map I would greatly appreciate it" Mira gave a soft smile after she said this. Not only did they need to stay together, but they needed to explore this place and loot anything useful

"It's Kaiyla, not Montgomery," she stated flatly. Her parents were always addressed that way and she wasn't them. She wasn't a lawyer nor a politician. She was an aspiring doctor with proficient skill and promising talent. It always annoyed her when people called her Miss Montgomery. She hated even more being addressed as it alone.
Then, Mira brought up cartography. As a medical major, she wasn't skilled in it to say the least, but she had helped other students in her study group with their work. So she had a rough idea of how to go from there. She didn't quite enjoy being bossed around, but it was better that someone had a plan. Still, she was greatly worried about Eiki's actions and the feeling in her gut that something was about to happen. Last time she got that feeling, she was nearly drowned when the flood waters hit Brisbane. The time before she got that feeling before getting a phone call that her Aunt died in a car crash. She never shook the feeling off as it was almost always right in some way.
Should I tell them about this feeling or just wait and see? I don't know whether they will believe me or not... she thought to herself as she mutitasked and sketched a map. As Mira took the lead with her pistol -- something Kaiyla was a little sceptical would work in this instant -- she looked for signs of where Kei may have gone. While she was busy drawing and making notes, Eiki was translating for her. She listened to him say the English for the locations of the village written on the old signs, then turned his attention to translating the Yumi woman's diary. What he was translating caught her attention.
"Wait, say that last part again," she said as she stopped in her tracks.
"December. On the fifth week of the month a Westener stumbled into our village half-dead from the cold. Robbed of this belongings and beaten, the others took their distance. Foreigners are not welcome here. I took him into my home, cleaned him up. His name is John, he is Moroccan," Eiki began before stopping. As he looked through the book, Kaiyla could see signs of pages being torn out.
He found a page with more words and continued, "Seventh week of December. The time we feared has come. As I write this, I know this will be the last of my work to be put on paper. Should anyone find this place and succumb to the same fate, I give you this warning. You will not be safe until you break the cycle. In my home, under the floorboards by the fire....John left his most cherished posession. Use it wisely."
Kaiyla looked to the clouds rumbling ahead and noted the green tinge; hail. "Mira, Eiki, I think we should go back to that house and wait out the storm. I also thing we're having the worst case of paranormal phenomenons. I guess this is a notion of the transcendent, supernatural or numinous, most likely involving entities like ghosts, demons or deities, as part of a cultural universal," she yelled over the howling wind.

As Kaiyla drew the map and Mira took the lead, he was translating both signs around them and Yumi's diary he'd been compelled to take before in the house. When he was translating it, Kaiyla told him to reread a part he'd glossed over. The more he read it, the more he felt as if someone was pushing him to the house again. Something -- or someone -- wanted them all inside. With the storm brewing into an intense supercell, he wasn't complaining. He took Kaiyla and Mira by the hand and drug them back to the safety of the house, locking the door behind them.
With them inside with their belongings again, he looked for the item from the John mentioned in the diary. Prying up some loose boards, he found a hand-carved box that was small and slender. He slid the wooden lid off and looked in disbelief at what sat inside it. Tarot cards. What a coincidence, as he carried an Ouija board that his mother, Minako, had given him. She always claimed her side of the family, the Japanese side, were derived from those who could communicate with the Spirit World. If that was the case, he was a vital part of this team now.
Mira nodded and said "Yeah I agree, this storm looks like its going to be bad. " she looked around and thought to herself, This place is strange.. Paranormal Phenomenon? Mira looked to them both and said "I'm sorry" for some reason, she didn't feel an emotion, but...a sort of dizzyness. Thoughts and words entering her mind that she couldn't understand why they were there.. Mira said I'm sorry a few more times, before the dizziness faded and she rubbed her head "I think we need to rest until daylight....Kaiyla..I called you montgomery mostly from my years in both Military school and different training camps, you were not called by your first name, i'm sorry"
Mira felt very tired for some reason, almost like she was weighed down.Mira sat down on her sleeping bag, she didn't knwo why she felt this sluggish, she had never felt this slugish, not even when sick. Mira glanced over, looking at the box in eiki's hands. She didn't say anything, just internally she was wondering where this fatigue was comming from.

Eiki looked around the room and a shiver ran up his spine. From memory, he remembered his mother (Minako) and her partner (Chiharu) performing rituals together when moving to a new house to keep evil spirits intent on harm away. He untied the crystal necklace from around his wrist and held on to the string in his right hand. He moved the necklace in a small circle as he let out a chant, moving around the room. The necklace seemed to pull itself towards Mira and Eiki thought he knew why. He walked over to her and, with the necklace above her head, said a single word in Japanese. A crimson butterfly flew out of the room and into the window, the fatigue she was suffering from going with.
"It seems the spirits here cannot truly possess us. That should work in our favor. However, I recommend drawing some kind of symbol of good luck on us. I have some special paint that won't wear off for it, but I don't know any symbols that would work in Japanese," he mentioned after a moment.
He looked at Kaiyla, who was busy lighting the fire by using two sticks of wood that were still in the fireplace. After a moment of struggle she managed to get embers and got the fire going using some spare wool nearby. Although dusty, it worked well to keep the fire alive. The red glow allowed a calming mood to fall over the room.

When Eiki performed his rituals, and something close to an exorcism on Mira, Kaiyla held her breath. Of all the things to remember, something did come up in her mind when Eiki mentioned symbols. "I know of one that could work. The Algiz Rune of Norse mythology. meant to represent protection and shielding one from harm. It looks like the letter Y. I can draw on on each of us if you feel it will keep any spirits away," she softly said from beside the fire.
She thought about the skills of the team and weighed it out. She had medical skills and eidetic memory; the ability to retain information and recall it at a given time. Eiki seemed to be spiritually inclined, like mediums and spiritualists. Mira had a strong demeanour and build, from her military training, and the natural skill of leading. It was a well-rounded team but they still had to find some way out of the cursed village.
Mira looked to them both and then to Eiki "Thanks" she said as she sat forward, Anything to not feel that sluggish and dizzy.Mira said "I am willing to do whatever needs to be done to not feel that way again" she looked to them both, she still looked tired, but this time only from the encounter. Mira said "isn't there like.. a problem with those runes.. like if they are flipped into reverse they meant something else?"
Mira wasn't really knowledgeable in these things, but she wasn't sure if it was such a good idea, She figured as long as the symbol was drawn right, She rolled up her sleeve figuring itd be on her inner arm.

"That may be true, but I know that when it looks like a Y it's positive. On that note, we don't have much else to lose, now do we?" she mentioned as she drew the rune in the dust in front of the fireplace as a way of getting it right the first time. Once Eiki had his ink out and added some water, she drew the symbol on each of them. For Eiki, it was on the back of his right hand to almost enhancing his spiritual connections. For Mira, it was on her upper arm to enhance her strength. For herself, it was on her chest with the center line descending down her sternum to enhance emotional decisions that could save a life.
As the rain and hail pelted down outside, followed by the loud crashes of thunder, the small home seemed eerily calm. Eiki sat by the fire, tossing in a bundle of sage he carried with him. The smell made the room very homely, but Kaiyla knew the superstition behind burning sage. It was to keep evil spirits away. With his knowledge of the supernatural, he really felt like part of the team now, not just someone to drag along like before. His dramatics seemed to calm down and a maturity seemed to exude from him now. She smiled, content he was finally stepping up to the plate of helping the girls to discover a way out.

While the girls were talking amongst themselves and lost in thought, he was doing all he could to try and protect them. He had placed one of the sage bundles in the fire to allow the smoke to travel through the room and repel evil spirits intent on harm. He was also shuffling John's tarot deck, although he seemed unaware he was doing this. It was almost like his mind was doing one thing and his hands another. Regardless, he didn't stop until Kaiyla asked why he was doing that.
"Huh?" he asked and looked down at his hands. "I guess I wasn't aware of it. Maybe we should do a reading? Or maybe use it to try and connect with John's spirit. We may be able to get Yumi if we do an Ouija seance."
"Ouija? You have to be kidding," Kaiyla said sceptically.
"I think I have a way of ensuring no evil spirits can be part of it, but I would need your help, ladies. The more positive thoughts in the atmosphere of the room, the better. Would you help?" he asked. He looked at Mira this time, seeing what her reaction would be.
Mira didn't really give a reaction, she looked between them and nodded "Yeah, i guess so" she hadn't realized that she made an error again, stupid emotions, sometimes she really wasn't sure how to react. Mira didn't study how people should be reacting in this situations because normally, people aren't in these situations. Mira also wasn't really a movie watcher.
Mira moved loser to them before managing to say "I dont really know much about this paranormal stuff" she then looked down in her lap. Mira was trying to imagine what she has seen so far in her mind. She was reviewing the map She wondered what could have happened here.
Mira saw something out of the corner of her eye a girls face in the window, here eyes open very very wide, her black hair falling into her face, it looked like she had been drowned, she didn't want to move she asked "So with this charms, is it normal for ghosts or whatever to sit outside? and just stare?"

Kaiyla looked and saw the girl, a look of disdain crossing her face. She felt safe in the small home of Yumi, kept safe by runes and rituals. Maybe Eiki was right when it came to finding answers through an Ouija seance. If he did know what he was doing, they may have a chance to get through it and find a way back to the cabin where the other students were waiting for them. How worried would they be, with the three -- four if you counted the missing Kei -- before more came to look for them? The thought lingered in her mind for a while, growing darker as she thought about it. What if more came and got trapped....or worse.....missing?
"If you think using Ouija is the best option, you have my support, Eiki," she admitted after a long moment of thought.

"It's surprisingly common for them to get as close as they can and stare. As unsettling as it is, it will likely happen a lot from now on. My mothers, they both taught me what they knew. I thought it was just tradition, just for show, but thankfully I listened because we need it now," Eiki admitted.
Once Kaiyla stated she was in favor of the seance, he looked to Mira. It almost seemed like she needed more convincing. Her confident demeanour faltered a bit and he did understand. She was trained to deal with situations of survival, but not like this. She was as in over her head as he and Kaiyla were. But, still, they needed her strength to guide them.
"I know it might seem scary, but I know what I'm doing. If I have your help, I'm sure we can find the answers we're looking for and we might get out of here before the break of dawn. But I can't do it alone, I need the strength of those around me and their happiest thoughts. We need you to help us, Mira," he explained.
Mira nodded listening to him, then it dawned on her, he needed emotion too. Happiest thoughts? she technically didn't have any because she didn't feel emotions, never had. Except for probably when she was an infant, but she glanced around.
They would instantly find her weird she knew that, but it wasn't really something she shared. She then said "I am afraid when it comes to happiest thoughts, i'm not going to be much help" she sighed and looked into her hands, she wasn't afraid of saying it, ofcourse if she were scared that would mean feeling something.
Mira looked up "I have what several psychiatrists call Alexithymia, My brain just does not have the ability to process emotion atall, and because of that I dont feel emotions. So techinically I know what are supposed to be happy thoughts, and memories but don't technically have them..."
Mira then glanced out the window and stared at the little girl "even right now, i bet you guys are terrified...I dont know what that feels like, because I've always been this way, for as long as i can remember, i learned how to react from watching others, i learned common reactions and behaviors that I needed to exhibit to be 'normal' "

Kaiyla heard mention of her diagnosis and went straight into medical mode. "Alexithymia is considered to be a personality trait that places affected individuals at risk for other medical and psychiatric disorders while reducing the likelihood that these individuals will respond to conventional treatments for the other conditions. Alexithymia is not classified as a mental disorder in the DSM-IV. It is a dimensional personality trait that varies in severity from person to person. A less common finding suggests that there may be a higher prevalence of alexithymia amongst males than females, which may be accounted for by difficulties some males have with "describing feelings", but not by difficulties in "identifying feelings" in which males and females show similar abilities. Eiki listened to Kaiyla go on about what that thing Mira said was. It was like listening to a lecture, something he actually liked. He was fascinated by history, but it was never a passion for him like drama. He was beginning to question himself, wondering if he was ready for this. He shook the sensation off -- he had to be ready. They were depending on him to do this.
"Kaiyla is right. Even if you don't have happy thoughts, per say, as long as there aren't any negative thoughts we should be fine," he reasoned. He wanted her to be part of this, as it was better with more people involved. Yes, there was a set back due to a psychological event unforeseen, but they just had to cope with it as it was and move forward.
Mira listened to Kaiyla and said "Thanks Kaiyla for explaining, and you did it way better than I ever could" she then looked to Eiki and said "Then if I will be a help, ill play part" she said, she didn't mean it to be insulting it was just the first phrase that came to mind. Mira sat there and said "So how do these things work?"
Mira had never taken part in a seance, it just wasn't soemthing that was considered. Sure she had gone to a private school in France, but the girls that she was roomed with didn't really believe in those things. Mira however believed now, with the things she saw, there was no denying it. She wouldn't fight anyone over it though.

With the girls both on board for the seance, Eiki instructed them to set up the room accordingly. They moved the table to the center of the room and lit small candles (Kaiyla found them on the windowsill) in each of the four corners. Kaiyla watched as Eiki took out an Ouija board and an orange planchette that seemed to be made from amber. The board itself seemed to be hand-made and intricately drawn out. She was rather impressed with it. Eiki took his position at the head of the table with his right hand lightly touching the planchett. Kaiyla and Mira were told to remain on either side of the table and think positive -- or neutral -- thoughts.

With everything set in place, Eiki was ready to begin. He breathed in slowly and readied himself for whatever might happen. He closed his eyes and placed his left hand on top of John's tarot deck. As he was about to talk, a shadow crossed the wall into the room. A male shadow, one that didn't belong to Eiki. Eiki opened his eyes and noted the shadow, gulping lightly.
"Are you John?" he asked,
The planchette moved itself to the word Yes a second later. Eiki looked to see a female shadow enter the room now. Before he could ask, the planchette moved along with his hand. Yumi it spelt out to his surprise.
"Please, tell me what you have to say. Tell us what it is you know about what happened here. How can we find a way out? How can we find our friend?" he asked.
The planchette moved but spelt no words, just random letters. Just as Eiki was about to ask again, Yumi's shadow moved to meet his against the wall and her hand touched his shoulder. His eyes clouded over and he sat up straight and tall. Possession. His hands remained on the planchette and John's tarot deck but when he spoke it wasn't his own voice. It was his mixed with a females.
"It happened so quickly. A cold sensation. A red butterfly. I did not understand. I cam for John to try and save us both. It got us. Something brought us to the shrine. I knew we needed to avoid it. A ritual.." he spoke.
Just as he was about to continue, the wind shook the house and the windows rattled. The windows cracked and more shadows came through. Eiki was back to his senses trying to re-establish a connection with Yumi and John when Kaiyla sprung up into action. The little girl from outside had materialised behind Mira and was about to strangle her. She leapt across the table grabbing the first thing she could - an iron firepoker, Eiki watched in terror as Kaiyla swung it at the girl just over Mira's head. The spirit screamed and vanished from sight.
"I lost Yumi and John," Eiki admitted in defeat. "Kaiyla, what was that? How did you know that would work?" he asked.
Mira sat there as all the chaos happened, she then saw Kaiyla swing over her head with a fire poker. Mira blinked as physical reflex and said "Was there something behind me?" She stood up and went over to her bag. Sadly she was hard to get along with because of her nearly flat demeanor. Mira sighed and said " I think we need to keep seances to a minimum for now, I'm no expert but that seemed like it turned to a s**t show"
Mira then pulled out some dried meals, similar to Military rations. It had been a while since they ahd eaten and they would need their strength "Alright I have 3 here and 22 left in the bag.. the three I have grabbed are Southern Buscuits and Gravy, Thanksgiving Turkey and Mashed potatoes and Baked Honey ham and corn..." she looked to them "I'll take whats left, you guys pick what you want." Mira also grabbed out a small canteen which had enough water in it for 4 meals, so she figured she would divide the last portion for drinks

"You put gravy on biscuits? How disgusting is that....savory gravy on sweet biscuits. I sincerely hope it's not a bickie like a scotch finger," Kaiyla muttered as Mira went over the flavors. It took her a solid minute to realise what Americans called biscuits was more like scones to her. She laughed yet still decided to go for the ham and corn.
She looked around the fireplace and what could be called a kitchen area for anything to eat on or eat with. She found some ceramic plates and cleaned them off with some of the water in her 1 litre bottle of water. She checked her own rations as she cleaned the plates; water bottle, gatorade powder, cranberries, trail mix. Not a lot in terms of food, but most of her supplies was her rather extensive medical kit. Something she hoped she wouldn't have to use much, if at all.
"I wonder why the fireplace poker was effective. Could it have something to do with medievel folklore? With how they thought that it was made up of the same properties as blood, mostly due to both containing traces of iron?" she said aloud. It was more a question to herself, but if someone could shed light on it, she'd be happier.

"It was less the seance itself and more of a combination of other spirits intent on not letting us know anything of importance. We will need to do one later on, but for the time being I can read the tarot and hope that John guides the answers," Eiki admitted.
He decided to take the turkey packet from Mira and watched her make them up, since she had experience with the MRE packets as he thought they were called. As the meals were being made and dishes being cleaned, he walked over to the cracked window and placed a piece of paper with symbols on it. It was pujok; Korean paper meant to dispel evil spirits. It was his attempt to once again seal the house from harm.
He sat back down and watched the girls manage to pull the meal together. "If it helps, I have some food in my bag. Some soup and ramen packets, even some crackers. Oh, and tuna," he mentioned.
