Did he have a beak??

He was clearly imagining things.

And yet, he could hear the music playing, could see Thorne and Lucas moving on the other side of the glass. Himself? Rylan wasn't sure what his real body was doing. Had he somehow switched consciousness with some other being?

Something... perched on the windowsill outside.

He opened his mouth - beak - and tried to speak. Because, right about now, <******** LOOK OVER HERE would have helped.

He manages to speak!...

It is a completely awful squawk.

He is no closer to escaping his predicament.

That... was not what he'd expected.

Squawk is not "Help me you fools" he managed to think before a wave of panic washed over him and he went for the squawk again.

Maybe, just maybe, it'd catch someone's attention.

He does not manage to successfully squawk. There is a feeling of warmth, of consolation, of apology--

--and then he's Rylan again, two arms, two hands, two eyes, a human mouth.

There are two very attractive men nearby.

As he felt himself returning to his own body, warmth flooded through him. Normality. And yet, when his senses sight and hearing finally dulled back to what he was used to, he felt his knees buckle and the squawk he'd been going for as a... bird became a slightly strangled, "Aaack."

He fell back and found himself sitting on the ground, feeling as dazed as he no doubt looked. The music faded away, leaving him staring wide-eyed at the aforementioned very attractive men nearby.

"Did you guys see that?" He asked, heart rate yet to return to normal. "There was... what did I..."

Who'd done that?? Rylan felt, without doubt, that someone somewhere had done something to him. Because out-of-body experiences didn't return you to your senses with an apology.

One minute, they were all moving, dancing, he was laughing, ready to give both a rewarding kiss for the serenade, but when he turned to look at Rylan again --

-- he was gone.

The good humor and mirth were wiped away in an instant, his grin falling into a line of shock. "Chief?" he asked, turning between the men and putting a hand on the taller man's cheek. "Ry?"

Nothing.

Lucas felt his chest swell with fear. Not him. Not him too. He shot Thorne a look that spelled out that fear before trying to grab Rylan by his arms, not sure what had just happened. He'd seen men go blank before, but -- that was in war, and he was not going to accept this happening --

And then Rylan was back with a strangled sound, startling Lucas back against Thorne and gripping the falling man's arms. He tripped with the weight of the larger man going down, catching himself on both hands and a knee, ignoring the jolt of pain and taking Rylan's arm with both of his hands. Alarmed, he looked up to Thorne, then back to Rylan. "Hey, Chief, breathe, breathe." His prosthetic hand cupped the other's face. "You were right here, but you were -- you were gone. Are you okay?"

His heart hammered in his chest. Not him. Not him. Please not him too.

There was a change, and Thorne wasn't stupid enough not to notice it.

One moment, they were all laughing, and happy, and he was on the edge of betraying himself to say something stupid, to propose something stupider. And then - and then Rylan disappeared. For a split second, Thorne was terrified it was disassociation - or some form of it - his mind blanking with fear. Did I - did we -

"Rylan," he said, his voice choking, his eyes finding Lucas's as both of them caught on, "Rylan - "

And then he was back, and falling, and Thorne watched them crash together to the ground like a pair of dominoes. He followed though, landing hard on his knees so that he was closer to them. His hands stopped short of landing on Rylan though, stuttering and shaking. What if he'd - what if - But Thorne took a deep breath, his mind hammering with thoughts, confusion. Just what was going on here? First his episode with Lucas, and now this? It wasn't normal, none of it. And his entire gut twisted, alive with worry, bone deep fear. He was afraid to touch Rylan, Lucas.

Not you two. I just found you guys - please. Don't do this.

He didn't know who he was praying to. Maybe the city in his dreams, the one that mirrored Ashdown in the throes of mist and rain. The place that felt so real that sometimes when he woke up it felt like he was slipping from reality to dream, and not the reverse. And now - now this. Now - them

His tongue knotted on itself, eyes shifting between the two men in his apartment.

"Are you alright?" He asked Rylan. The words felt shallow, and superficial, and his expression showed that there was a lot more he didn't know how to say. "Rylan - what happened?"

"I don't- I was," a ******** bird. But that probably sounded as crazy out loud, if not more so, as it did in his head. And Rylan wasn't sure he was ready to put that on Lucas and Thorne just yet.

All his life, he'd been the one to shoulder other people's burdens. Because he had broad enough shoulders for it, both literally and figuratively. Because it was damn near impossible to rattle him. Because he'd made it his job to care about other people, and now that he was rattled, now that he probably needed some care himself, he wasn't prepared to ask for it.

"I must've... I don't know, blanked for a minute," he said finally, but not before shooting a sidelong glance at the window he'd been peering through only moments before. If the bird he'd briefly inhabited had really been there, it was gone now, and with it any evidence that the episode hadn't just been a figment of his imagination.

"Say, did you... Was there a bird over there, just now? Did you hear..."

Ah. What was the point.

He covered Lucas' hand with his own, holding him tight, wanting to pull him - hell, both of them - to him and lose himself in their embrace, just for a moment. But he didn't.

Thorne's reaction unnerved Lucas. "Hey," he said softly, feeling the tension in the room ramp. Looking back to Rylan, he shook his head a little, brows knit in concern. "I was too busy looking at you, Chief, sorry."

Where Rylan refrained, Lucas had no such tact. He drew himself closer to the fireman and all but lifted the hand and put the man's arm around his own shoulders, leaning against him. "You sure you're okay?" Frowning, he lifted his prosthetic hand to briefly touch Rylan's jaw, making sure he was there, before turning his worried eyes to Thorne.

"And you. C'mere." Still holding Rylan's arm around him, he shifted his free hand to then grab at Thorne's hand, pulling him in. Lucas settled against Rylan's side and practically hauled Thorne into his own embrace, because this was the only way he could comfort them both at the same time. He was scared, but it was trumped by Rylan's disorientation and Thorne's panic; it was easy, then, to focus on them. Lucas had his priorities, and he had them both against him now.

His hummingbird heartbeat was all that betrayed his own condition, tilting his head back to look up at Rylan. "Now, what is this about a bird?" Pale eyes were drawn beneath heavy brows. Rylan had never looked towards the window during his episode, so how could he ask about a bird? Lucas had to ask himself - was he really ready to get the answer to that?

There is a bird outside the window still, a black bird with a white spot on its head. Even from here, it can be discerned that the bird has eyes exactly the same color as Rylan's.

Thorne watched Rylan return to himself, and his heart was at once pumping adrenaline and relief and ******** terror into his body. His jaw worked, pulsing, and his entire body curved beneath the overwhelming worry. It was too fast - too soon. There had been something good here, in this moment. And now, Ashdown was trying to consume it again.

"Rylan," he said softly, because he recognized the edge the man was on, the precipice of struggle, "You can lean on - on us." His eyes lifted to Lucas, holding the other mans gaze long enough for it to sink in - either of them could come to him if they needed it, and damn it all. He wouldn't run away. Not from this. Not from them. "I'm. We're not going anywhere."

His eyes flickered to the window. "I don't - there are birds there all the time. Millie - she watches them." He struggled for the words, shrugging helplessly. His cat was nowhere in sight, probably hiding from the sudden noise and the strangeness. But he'd drawn her more than once, her paws pressed to the glass, meowing incessantly at the flighty little creatures that came to visit them at all hours of the day.

Thorne let out a noise when Lucas grabbed him, not unlike the startled yelp of a dog. But he didn't protest, even though his eyes widened. But the warmth of the bodies was - familiar, and warm, and it made him curl in around them both, one arm moving to brush against Rylan's arm, a physical reassurance, the other against Lucas.

"I swear to god," he said low, for both of them to hear, "on a scale of one to actively against us, I think the world is trying to ******** us all over."

And it's becoming a problem, Thorne thought, the wild, animal urge to protect Lucas and Ry flaring inside of him, making him tighten his grip on both of them, and I'm going to get to the bottom of it if it kills me.

And then his eyes lifted, and he stilled and straightened, staring at the bird on his windowsill. Staring at its colors - wondering -

"That's - " Impossible didn't seem right because anything in this ******** place seemed possible now, "Is that the bird you were talking about?"

And then, helplessly, "Well, if you were a bird, Ry, you'd be handsome as hell, and now we know."

Rylan's eyes were not, in any sense of the word, common. He shared them with his biological mother and no one else - so far as he had met - in his life. He had wolf eyes, as his dad would call them, amber eyes the color of warm honey and they had a way of catching the sun in them and lighting up in a fiery gold when it was bright out.

They were, for all intents and purposes, pretty damn recognizable eyes.

So when he lifted his eyes out of the embrace and found the black bird sitting silently on the windowsill, staring in with eyes that were startlingly and undeniably familiar, even Rylan couldn't call it a coincidence.

"Ye- Not... a specific bird," he managed to say, looking away for fear that it would someone suck him into its body and mind again. The episode had shaken him in a way that no fire, no IED could ever do. Those were physical threats, which he knew how to overcome. This was something else entirely.

And he would have sat there and let the terror of it all consume him, but that wasn't something he was willing to do. Whatever was going on in this town, whatever it wanted from him, it wasn't going to get that easily. Not without a fight.

He shut his eyes and shook his head and took a breath. Does it hurt? he asked himself. It didn't. Not physically. Will it kill you? No. Or maybe it would, but as far as he concerned, it was all mental. So you can get up. Yes. Guess what. You can do whatever you ******** well want to unless it kills you. You know damn well it won't. Your head wants to tell your body it can't do something? Well ******** that guy. What does he know. Get the ******** up.

He'd given himself this talk half a million times, had heard it yelled at him through a speaker by his coxswain half a million more. The familiarity of it filled him, made every muscle in his body tense with anticipation. Finally, when he opened his eyes, he looked at Lucas, looked at Thorne, looked for the black bird with the white spot on its head again.

"I'm alright," he said. "I'm fine. Are you guys alright?"

He made a soft sound of agreement with Thorne, one arm around him, the other lifting to touch his fingertips to Rylan's jaw when his eyes opened again. Lucas had been quiet during Thorne's exchange and Rylan's response that wasn't a response at all, exhaling slowly. He'd picked these two men as his and naturally, both of them had to be the Strong Silent Type. Deal with their own s**t until it killed them. Or he beat it out of them. Whichever came first.

Pale eyes lingered on Rylan's face for a moment, not convinced he was okay or fine, and it showed.

Sighing, he leaned his head back against Rylan and threaded his fingers through Thorne's hair. "I'm sandwiched between the two most important men in my life - that, mind you, I am coincidentally dating - who are both unfairly gorgeous. So I'm fantastic, thanks." Lucas fixed his famous s**t-eating grin on his face, because while his two would keep to themselves, he'd throw himself out there. "I mean, if I could come home to this every day, I'd die a happy man." He tried to make it a joke, but it was more...quarter joke, three quarters not. While he had no way of knowing how they'd met, it didn't matter much - they were all there, now, and there was nothing wrong or uncomfortable. That was louder than any real words could be.

His gaze turned beyond the firefighter to the window, to the bird. The bird. The one Rylan was probably talking about even though he hadn't seen it during his vacancy. Something like being shot pained in his chest; he'd know those eyes anywhere, on a bird no less, which pretty much meant the Otherworld had come calling for their ******** you, he thought, bitterness tight in his throat for a few heartbeats. <******** you and I will burn the heart out of that shithole Otherworld if I ever have the chance.

A slow exhale, and it passed; he had to be the upbeat one, here. "So is it...just going to stare at us?" he asked, lowering his hand from Rylan's face to instead seek his free hand and hold it, tight. "Should you -- invite it in or something?" He glanced up to the eyes he knew. "Do you want to get to ******** birds, ruining a perfectly good pile of warmth. Nuzzling into Thorne, he murmured softly, "Wanna help us get up, babe?"

Sure you are, Thorne almost said, but that would have been pot calling the kettle black and he did not want to by the hypocrite in the room. (Even though all of them were, to varying degrees, hypocrites.)

He pulled his lower lip between his teeth, sinking a canine in to ground him to the reality here - sure, everything was terrifying and things were happening that he couldn't explain... but here they were. Whatever was going on, whatever came - here they were.

"I'm - " he started, wondering just how he was. Worried, concerned, terrified? Happy, hopefully, dangerously on the edge? It was a war, and Thorne wasn't sure where to lean. He cocked his head at Rylan, mouth curving into a curious expression. "Better," he offered.

And then he paused, and stared at Lucas. And then he realized something. And then his face turned an ungodly shade of red.

"Alright, listen," he said in response, his eyes ghosting between the two of them, wild-bright but focused, hungry and sated and searching at the same time, "how is it that I have asked both of you out on separate occasions without ever realizing that you both know each other?" His eyes closed and he tilted his head back with a loud groan. "I'm a homewrecker, oh my god. I asked your boyfriend out, Lucas."

And then he opened his eyes, and looked at them both. There was something there, a brazen honesty. And letting his voice lower, he said, "You can come home to this - both of you." And paused, then pushed on before his courage left him. "I'm not going to pretend - I know what's happening, or how the ******** cosmos dragged all of us together in this world. But if - " The words caught in his throat. "I have a door, and a cat, and a window. I'm willing to find a way, if you want."

He exhaled, eyes flicking to the bird again. It was remarkable what it resembled - who it resembled. But Lucas and Rylan brought him back, and he shifted, happy for a task that wasn't being embarrassed at how terrible he was with words or staring down The Enemy Bird.

"If Millie doesn't try and eat it first," He said mildly, "I think we could try inviting it... in? I have... bird seed?" He lifted his head as Millie herself appeared, leaping onto one of the skewn couches and peering at the bird. "Don't you dare," he added in a hissed aside to her, and the cats eyes found him. Her tail flicked once, twice, and she seemed to decide that getting roasted wasn't the way to go today, curling up instead to sleep with her back to them.

With a sigh and stretch, Thorne carefully untangled himself enough to push up to his feet, regretting the loss of contact immediately. "Here," he said, turning and offered both of his hands to them.

"I know this place is a mess," he added, "but since we're already unconventional as ******** and I still owe Rylan one for saving my a** - want to stay for dinner?"

And quite possibly A Talk.

But. But that came later.

"Oh, no, we just met..." Rylan muttered, too distracted by the staredown he had commenced with the bird to really hear what else was going on. He was still shaken, but the look he had fixed onto the feathered creature was only half trepidation. The other half was an odd kind of determination that usually didn't appear on his face unless he was moments away from going on the water for a race.

You think I won't figure you out? He thought. Still. He was certainly going to avoid going to near any birds for a while.

"You can try luring it in," he said finally, allowing Thorne to help yank him to his feet after a brief moment of considering not to. His instinct told him there was no need, but part of him understood that he owed them something after that episode. "I'm not sure what good it'd do."

And after all of that, dinner sounded like the best idea in the world. "If you're offering, I won't say no."
