"I know how much he loves Wil. Watch out- he'll be drug testing you regularly if you make him worry too much." Alg's brows bobbed lightly and he smirked. Listening to Zac talk about research was much better than the alternatives. "I've been doing that a bit myself. Looking into the history and local lore." Algie actually rounded the counter and squinted when right on top of a nearby pile was a brand new copy of a book on local folklore. He didn't quite remember putting it there but- "Here-" and underneath was a book on the local native american tribes, "Hm." Finding what he'd been looking for had been suspiciously easy recently. "We clearly have some books here at the shop. You're welcome to peruse-" He trusted Zac not to mess up anything that could later be sold. He would not, under any circumstances, be offering Heliodora's book to anyone. Though there were other copies of the same printing- in that same pile of books. Weird.

“He’s welcome to… I think there are enough weird things going on in this town without adding drugs to the equation.” He gave a nervous laugh and sighed. The fact that Alg had been doing his own historical research though was kind of cool. “When I’m done… I promised I’d tell Autumn too…she’s the one who uh… tamed the deer but I was thinking what I could do is meet with you and Jer and we can exchange what we found?” He offered. “I mean, you’ll probably beat me to most things but, I think… If we’re going to do that kind of leg work, I think it could be good to have a meeting of the minds…” He trailed off for a moment and then admitted. “And maybe we can keep Detective Mercer out of trouble…. Probably not, but….”

"Good luck on us attempted to keep Jeremiah out of trouble. Forty years and he still doesn't listen to me." Alg shrugged and picked up his tea to sip, though it was getting cold and running low. "Sounds like a good idea," He wasn't quite ready to share his own visit to see Heliodora, not yet anyway, "What have you been looking into specifically?" Thankfully whatever that horrible feeling he had was, it had passed, and he was happy to relegate it to the 'indigestion or anxiety' compartment of his brain pretty easily. "Has this town always been so strange?"

"I have this... sliver of hope that with two of us trying to keep him alive despite himself, we might have a better chance?" He said, though his voice said that no, there really wasn't a -lot- of hope there. "Mostly... history of the town? I should really sit down with both of you but, that house out on the beach, there was a rumor from Autumn that.. sunny lived on the cost, and it IS occupied, something about the attic room. There was also this really old Indian myth about a girl, an indian princess, and guess who makes an artist cameo right in the book?"

"We'll take care of him." Alg nodded, there may have been a calm reassuring wink, but he was putting his mug down to lean to another box of new inventory. As if by strange powers (lawl) the book Zac was talking about sat right on top. This was becoming too much of a coincidence, "The story of heartbreak hill?" And he held out the book, "Is it our never aging beach witch?"

Zac - stared-...tipping his head slightly and frowning... "It was a... hostorical book, on the town." He said slowly. "... can you tell me what that story is? I mean I can read it but..." He moved closer to take the book frowning. He wanted to know the author too, were they local? how significant was this?

"Well I keep a lot of books on local lore-" Algie took this book that he didn't remember ordering, "Folktales, history, mythology.." He flipped it open to the particular article he'd been referring to, though there was an uncanny ease to finding it. "The college teaches classes on it. And tourists sometimes want to know about a place they are staying in.." Of course he didn't remember this many being handy before but here they were.

The names didn't match, the ...tribe didn't match, but it still sent a shiver down his spine. An indian girl who fell in love with a man, with eyes like the sea. Someone from a Native American tribe alone a coast line falling in love with an Man who had blue eyes. It was most likely... someone with european origins? "Well it's not... it's not perfect but... it's close." He said looking troubled. "How did you... how did you know the story? Just... did you sit in on the class or?" Though he had a creeping suspicion and at last he said. ".... was Heliodora in that class?"

"No-" Alg rubbed his brow a moment, "She was in high school. Though she and her friends may have sat in on my class once. I barely remember." The police had brought it up when they were looking for her but they had been so innocuous that he didn't quite recall. "I sold this book," Alg motioned to it, "to Heliodora. Not this exact book but it's nothing super rare. She was looking for this story and as I remember, in a bit of a hurry and bother.." And she didn't look at any others and then, after she was gone, it was returned to him. And since, he'd read it cover to cover.

"I wonder." he said softly. His mind was racing. Had she gone seeking the books from a lead similar to his own? What if... what if. He had no idea if she might or might not have visited the house. The easiest way of course would be - try and find a way back to Other Ashdown, and hope to find her again. Somehow that seemed like a terrible option still though. All this...magical stuff had made ice-burns on Jer's back, had threats of hearts being ripped out, lost feet... icy shoulders, missing kids. Really... as curious as he was he pushed the thought down as best he could. Likewise...there was NO way he was mentioning that brief thought to either Alg -or- Jeremiah. "I suppose she didn't say why she wanted it?" he asked softly. "Was that...was that the book you tried to bring back to her in the... other town?" He winced slightly remembering the memory, the pain that it had involved. He shook his head slowly and looked thoughtful. "We ...really all need to sit down I think." He muttered. "I have a few more things around town I want to look into I think but..."

His thought was cut off half by his own desire to let the rest of his thought be filled in rather than repeat himself, but also by a sudden, and unexpected sensation.
ICE… ice inside his chest, pressing behind his ribs like hoarfrost, needles of cold and pain that grew and forced its way outward, cracking his ribs like frost cracked stone and moved earth.
His hand went to his chest, face blanching with remembered pain, but it’s not… his memory. He’s sure of that. It -has- to be someone else, but…
But there are no books, this is the NORMAL town, this is where things should be at least marginally more normal, not echoes of the books of that ‘other’ grey and rainy town.
He cleared his throat, glancing away and trying to minimize his reaction, though he felt breathless, the echo of the remembered pain was still alarming and strange.
He swallowed hard, grasping for something that might make sense. Maybe it was… an after affect of the book they had tried to deliver back to Heliodora?
Was it… her memory? Had he gotten it only now?

Algie had been ready to tell him yes, maybe they should sit down, when Zac looked liek he was struck by something suddenly. He turned near white for a moment and the shop owner reached for him, "Zac? Alright?" The young man looked near breatheless and he offered a hand for stability, if taken it was warm and soothing, because Zac had for a second looked like he might fall over.

“uh..” he blinked, trying to clear his head and he brushed his hand against the hand that was offered, almost but not finishing taking it. “Yeah… yeah I’m ok I just…” he frowned, worry Alg by saying something or? “Just uh… Indigestion.” He said and cleared his throat. “No I just um… I just, remembered something that I ah… that I need to do. Later, and things…” He forced a smile but did glance at Alg’s hand; it was just a little surprising in its warmth. Had his hands always been that warm? He took a breath and let it out. “Yeah… I’m fine!” Hell’s bells… maybe he SHOULD talk to Sunny… Damn it.

Algie looked suspicious but he wasn't one to talk really. "Maybe we should lay off these scones.." Or you know, he'd save them for later and eat them all because food. "Anyway," Alg was picking up piles of books and setting them on the counter, more copies of the same local folktales, as well as some things he recognized he'd ordered. Hm. He'd have to send some of this back, "I think it's much safer to do our research on this side-" Away from other ashdown. It was safer for Zac anyway. The professor may have been steering him towards that research on purpose, especially after he'd leaned away from it himself. He just wanted Zac to be safe..
