“Kid Flash?” Graham repeated, quirking a brow. "Not exactly the most flattering title, especially since you don’t exactly look like a kid.” But, yet again, he wasn’t one to talk since he did go by Robin, the Boy Wonder, which wasn’t exactly something you’d want to be called when you were well into your teens. Still, at least he’d learned the guy’s proper name since…Flash Jr. wasn’t exactly the best moniker to refer to someone by either. It did make him smile a little knowing that he wasn’t that far off from guessing it.

The teen frowned as he moved his bag’s strap from around his body. “So you don’t actually work with the Flash?” Well, so much for asking for some pointers. There went that tiny shard of hope that Kid Flash might just be able to help Graham figure out how to sweet talk his way onto getting on the Bat’s good side. That, however, would have involved revealing who he actually moonlighted as, and that was definitely better kept under wraps, regardless of whether or not he’d ever encounter the other sidekick again. Now he knew that they were both in a similar position though; working alone and probably under the radar of their older counterparts, which wasn’t exactly an ideal or easy spot to work within. Many times had Graham have to literally stop what he was doing to run or hide if he so much as caught sight of the man’s cape or cowl, which really sucked when he was in the middle of a fight. He felt like some common pest ducking for cover whenever a light was flicked on.

“Any reason why? Or is that knowledge strictly a secret?” He was beginning to sound like his old shrink with those questions. Graham didn’t mean to pry, but he was curious as to the hero’s reasoning. Maybe they just didn’t like each other? Who could say.
Slight vibrations caused the teen to straighten up and reach behind him, fishing out his phone from his back pocket. s**t, had it really been an hour since he’d left the school campus? He tapped in his password and read over the text, not surprised when it was from his mother.

[We’re taking a short break. Is everything alright? You aren’t out in the rain are you?]

No, mom, I was just nearly mugged and then I got kidnapped by one of the city’s heroes I was joking about earlier.

That’s one way to give your parent a heart attack.
[No, I’m inside a coffee shop a few blocks from the campus. I’ll walk back to the college when the rain let’s up!]
[ (: Okay sweetie stay safe! Xoxox]

Graham rolled his eyes, resisting the urge to smile as he bypassed his back pocket in favor of tucking his phone into his bag. “It’s not my position to ask, but aren’t heroes and sidekicks usually all buddy-buddy with one another?” he continued from where he'd left off, looking back up at Kid Flash from his spot on the ground.

Vince shrugged. No, he wasn't a kid, but he obviously wasn't Flash and the city needed something to call them, so they called him by the previous sidekick's name, and who was he to object? Graham asked why he didn't work with the Flash, and Vince thought over how to answer properly. Truth be told, Flash intimidated him. On one hand, he'd love to work with the man, on the other hand, the Flash might not want a sidekick, and he'd try to convince him to stop being a hero. Vince wouldn't stop, even if Flash told him to, but he didn't want to find out that he didn't have the guy's support. He'd rather work not knowing if the Flash approved than knowing that he didn't. He knew he was doing good, helping people, but he had no idea if Flash would agree to work with him.

Graham had pulled out his phone to check something, and when he put it away, he continued on. Vince lifted his hands and stretched them out to either side of him, palms up in a gesture of Does it look like I know?; He returned his hands to his lap before speaking. "I've never met the guy, and to be honest I'm not entirely sure he knows I exist." But he liked it that way. For now, at least. Flash hadn't come looking for him yet, and when he did, maybe Vince would stop running and talk to him. He wasn't sure yet.

“Isn’t that something I’m familiar with..,” Graham murmured, rubbing at the back of his neck as he glanced at the wooden boards over the window. Well, somewhat.
It was more along the lines of “he knows I exist, he just can’t catch me yet.” Yet was a worrisome concept, because who could say what the reaction would entail if one of his evasions happened to go wrong? If he got caught, what would happen? Would he get a “good job, sport,” or a stern talking to that could rival the kind his parents gave? What if he asked, no, commanded him to give up his role—whether it be for a variety of reasons—and what if Graham said no?
Well of course he’d say no, but maybe not to his face.
                                                                          Then again…

“It’s a tough position to be in, that’s for damn sure,” he confessed, moving his bag off his lap so he could hug his knees to his chest. This was probably the weirdest scenario he’d ever managed to be in; having what could vaguely be considered a heart to heart with some sidekick he knew next to nothing about. “I’m sure it’s hard to be noticed when you’re moving that fast, but do you actually want him to find out about you?” he questioned, cocking his head to the side. “I mean, if you did, wouldn’t that have been priority number one after putting on the spandex?” It was spandex, right? Graham wasn’t entirely sure what superheroes made their clothes from, but it was only safe to assume from how skintight they always looked.

“He might be hard to find, but you should try talking to him if you’re supposed to be working with him or whatever. Maybe try talking to him? Like “hey, how about this weather,” or “come here often?” Anything would work, really. Who knows, he might be happy to have you around.”

Like Graham, of all people, was really someone to be giving advice about that.

The way Graham spoke, it was almost like he'd been in the exact situation himself. It made him wonder who Graham was trying to avoid, and why. "I'm not really good with people," he said simply, as if that explained everything. He didn't want to deal with Flash because he didn't know Flash, and he didn't trust him. To him, it was just that simple. Of course, rationally, he knew that unless he talked to Flash, there'd be no chance of trust between them, but he didn't want to deal with the hassle of it.

"Who are you trying to avoid?" he asked curiously. He was allowed to ask that, right? Was that too personal to ask someone? He wasn't sure, but Graham could always tell him he didn't want to answer and Vince would let it go. He could respect the boundaries people wanted to set, it was only right.

Still, at least the guy was actually talking to him instead of just staring or, you know, kidnapping him. Yeah, that was still a bit of a sore spot, especially since he really didn’t receive an answer as to why he did it aside from the more or less truth to the fact that Graham was a weird kid, but he’d get over it. Overhead, a rumble of distant thunder shattered the otherwise silence that had settled over the store.

He smiled wanly at his question before laughing a little. “God, what a question,” he whispered under his breath, his sad little smile still remaining as he thought about it. “You know, I could tell you anything to that question, and you’d be none the wiser,” Graham pointed out, sitting up straighter while he still hugged his knees to himself. “I could say my abusive parents, or my creepy stalker, or, hell, my life if I wanted to get metaphorical and deep.” The teen laughed again, genuine and melodious before shaking his head. To be fair, the second one may not be that far off...

“I don’t know who I’m avoiding. A man, I guess, but that’s really it. I’ve never gotten a good look at him, but I don’t need to see him to know who he is. He must hate me because every time I see him, I run in the opposite direction,” Graham explained with an amused smirk, releasing his legs from his hold. “I guess we have that in common—running, I mean. I might not be as fast as you, but I’m faster than him and flexible enough to hide most anywhere. My one saving grace, I swear.”

Vince listened as Graham explained, trying to make sense of what he said. The way he described it, the guy sounded like an mysterious stalker. Some guy he never got a good look at but turned and ran from once he saw him. It sounded like Graham needed help with the guy, but didn't sound like Graham was going to be looking for that kind of help. He'd said he was from Gotham, were all Gothamites this way? What way? he asked himself, and it took a couple seconds for him to come up with an answer.

                                                          Insane.

The guy had a stalker but he hadn't taken any action to stop it other than running away from him. Of course, Vince ran from Flash whenever he spotted the red, but that was different. Flash hadn't caught sight of him just yet, Flash never tried to chase him like this guy stalking Graham.

"You have a stalker and you just let it happen?" he couldn't help but ask. A stalker he didn't even know the identity of. How could Graham be so calm about it? Most people would be more than a little freaked about it.

No, no. It isn’t… It isn’t like that,” the teen protested, though the more he thought about it, the closer to the truth it seemed. He really was sounding like a stalker—though he was thankfully one who’d hopefully hadn’t uncovered his civilian identity. He fumbled with his fingers, staring down at the entwining digits as he quickly tried to make the whole thing make sense to an outsider he could explain nothing too.
He might as well be tap dancing.

“I didn’t just let it happen. Trust me; I’ve been against it since the start. It wasn’t even supposed to happen, but I had messed up and…” He cut himself off by biting his bottom lip. Graham had been handling the fight just fine, and he’d been keeping off Batman’s radar just fine too, but he’d gotten distracted. He hadn’t expected Batman to arrive at a low-end drug heist. The teen should have though, considering that Gotham was his city, and he must know the ins and outs of everything involving it. The shadow of the man had caught him off guard, however, and instead of turning and running, he took a hit from a thug that sent him reeling—sent him face to face with Batman.

“He’s just… It’s just…” Graham struggled to find the words. “It’s something I can’t avoid no matter what. I know, it’s really weird and probably doesn’t make a lot of sense, but that’s because I can’t explain it..” He rubbed at the back of his neck, frowning all the while he mulled the situation over. “It’s ridiculous, but it’s not something dangerous, I don’t think. He isn’t trying to kill me, or else he could have already. At least, I’m pretty sure he could have by now if he wanted to, so…”

Graham was leaving out large pieces of the story and Vince didn't understand any of it. So the guy wasn't out to kill him, but not all stalkers were, and he should still get help in dealing with him. Get some cops to protect him or something. He shook his head, not able to make heads or tails of it. "I still think you should get help, but something tells me you won't," he said, shrugging. He'd never had a problem with stalkers or people of the sort, so he wasn't sure he had any right giving advice. Graham wasn't in danger, he claimed, so maybe it was more under control than Graham was suggesting.

He thought of something then and tilted his head to the side. "Do you think he followed you here?" he asked. If TV was anything to go off of, stalkers were persistent, and would follow their subjects anywhere. Was it possible that Graham's stalker followed him to Central? If so, he would have lost Graham after the teen went into that alley. Only Flash would have been able to follow them to this little hiding spot.

God, could you imagine that conversation? Hello, police, I’d like to report someone stalking me. Well, he’s about six foot, has pointy ears and, oh, he’s the Batman. Prepare for instant dial tone or an angry operator yelling at him for being a dumb punk. Thus, needless to say, it wouldn’t end well. Besides, he was fairly certain the G.C.P.D were in bed with Batman, so a whole lot of good that would do him.

Graham furrowed his brows in contemplation for a moment before shaking his head. “No, he…” The teen paused to purse his lips. Steady now, he was treading on thin ice. “I mean, he’s sort of a stalker, but not that devoted. Not the whole obsessed, cut-off-a-piece-of-my-hair-to-add-to-his-shrine-to-me devoted,” he explained, hoping that that made some semblance of sense. Because honestly? Was there even a word to describe what he was going through? You’ve failed me once again, dictionary, he thought to himself with a sigh.

“Like I said, it’s really nothing big. I worry about it sometimes, sure, but like I said, he hasn’t caught me yet and I don’t intend for him to.”

It still didn't make any sense to Vince, but he felt like they were going around in circles and he was, if he was being honest, getting bored of it. He wasn't going to get a straight answer that would make this make sense, so why waste more time on it? "Hasn't caught you yet, but there's still time for that to change," he pointed out. He remained silent for about a minute, just thinking. Graham was interesting, to say the least. He hadn't met anyone from Gotham before. Hadn't seen any Gothamites here in Central. Or maybe he had, there was a chance he might have saved one or two, but he wouldn't know it. He never stopped to talk to the people he saved like he was talking to Graham now.

Gotham was home to some interesting characters, heroes and villains alike. A man who dressed as a bat, a man who dressed as a clown. Vince didn't know everything about Gotham, but everyone knew about Batman and his archrival Joker. His curiosity got the better of him. Did people who lived there regularly see Batman around or did he hide from civilians too? "Have you ever met Batman?" he asked.

He wouldn’t let it change—no way in hell was he ever going to get caught by that man. The rain had quieted into a light trickle that could still be heard above, but it was by no means over, much to his chagrin. Soon though, he guessed, and maybe Kid Flash would be so kind as to return him to his proper place after practically kidnapping so they could just… Talk. Which, god, was still so strange to Graham. They meet, guy says absolutely nothing, said guy then steals him off to some shutdown store somewhere, and then starts to talk about personal things nearly right off the bat. Still…Graham supposed that there were worse ways to spend his second day in Central City.

However, things were beginning to get a little too personal. Graham blinked at him, momentarily quiet before laughing briskly. s**t s**t s**t s**t s**t. “Batman? No, I’ve never met him, and I don’t really intend to. If you ever do get the chance to meet him in Gotham, it generally means you’re in trouble and he’s there to save your a** or you’re trouble and he’s there to stop you,” he replied, smiling anxiously despite how nonchalant he was trying to sound. Had he let too much slip, having been caught up in the moment of how nice it was to talk to someone about his other work related problems despite being so cryptic about it? “Everyone knows he’s real by now, especially us Gothamites, but I know a lot of us still treat him like an urban legend despite it. I guess it’s just easier to think of it that way instead of the truth of the matter; that there’s some crazy guy jumping around our rooftops in a tight bat costume trying to keep us all safe.”

Graham's explanation of Batman seemed accurate to the stories that made it this far. At least, it made sense to him. A guy like Batman likely wasn't going to be hanging out with civilians, not when he had people to take down and crimes to stop. He wondered what the guy under the mask was like. Was he as cold and calculating as the stories said Batman was? Did he relax and hang out with friends or did he not have friends? Questions that could never be answered, as no one knew who was under there. That was the point, he supposed. Masks keep identities secret, it was why he wore his. He didn't want anyone finding out who he was and going after Bethany. She was the only person he trusted with his life, he couldn't put hers at risk.

"Why pretend he's not real?" he questioned. If someone was putting their life at risk to save an entire city, wouldn't people want to help him or at least acknowledge his existence? It seemed rather unfair of Gotham. Of course, people only spoke of Kid Flash as a rumor, but he intended it to be that way. He didn't want people to know. Besides, he had powers to assist his hero-work. As far as anyone knew, Batman didn't have powers. Just a regular guy in a suit and fighting criminals. The risk was higher for Batman than it was for a speedster. It seemed rude to him to treat him like nothing but a legend.

Gotham isn’t exactly a normal place to go about having a normal life; everyone there has some sob story to preach to the choir, regardless of social class.” That’s just how the cookie crumbled. Granted, some folks managed to scrape by with the semblance of a normal life despite the tribulations Gotham seemed to brew up. Alyssa was probably one of the most normal people he knew; she was raised by two loving parents with stable jobs, she has a much younger sister of whom she’s pretty close to, and she lives in relatively safe neighborhood as far as Gotham standards go. His other friends lead relatively normal lives; like Yoli or Tomas or Mark, but Yoli’s dad was in Blackgate, Tomas lived with his aunt and uncle, and Mark? Mark never talked about his home life, and in a place as mean as Gotham, that usually meant you barely had one.

Graham wasn’t particularly open about all aspects of his life; he never mentioned the stress he’d undergone during his gymnastics years, never mentioned his abusive relationship, and certainly never mentioned his current night gig. To his friends, he was just a rich kid with divorced parents. Gotham’s gravity, everyone would say, because his parents had been so in love before they really settled down in the city and started a family. Really, it boiled down to his mother wanting an active career in a field of study she had already devoted so much of her time to rather than be a dowdy housewife, which Graham totally respected. His dad—or, rather, his dad’s side—could have some real antiquated values; like Graham could only inherit the company if he kept his last name Fen, which…Kinda made sense, but was also a little weird. If he changed his last name to anything else? God knows what would happen then since he was an only child. It’d probably fall to the stockholders all the while his family’s disappointment and capability to shun would all go to him.

“Sometimes it’s just easier to play pretend when you want things to be as normal as they can be in such a weird world. Even if that means being ignorant, people will find a way,” Graham added. The teen hesitated before smiling. “So...Are you a fan of the Bats or something? Hoping I could maybe land you with an autograph? I wonder if he’s like Zorro, only instead of Z, he’d meticulously draw his Bat symbol instead.”

As Graham explained how it was easier for people to pretend things were normal, Vince found himself wondering if he would pretend Batman didn't exist were he to live in Gotham. Graham had said that if you met Batman, you were either in trouble, or you were the trouble, and if those were the only two options, Vince had a feeling he'd just carry on life as normal, but he didn't know that he'd outright act like the caped crusader wasn't there. Things weren't like that here in Central. Flash was a public figure, he did interviews, made very public rescues. Hell, there was even a museum for him. You couldn't pretend he didn't exist, because he was everywhere. Central was very proud of it's hero. Whereas Gotham seemed to hide theirs. It didn't make much sense to Vince, but he didn't live in Gotham. Perhaps it would make more sense if he did.

Graham asked him if he was a fan of Batman, and he quickly shook his head. "No, I was just curious about how things worked in Gotham," he said. "Like, what is there to do for fun there? If crime rates are really as bad as they say, how do people even dare go outside for fear of getting attacked?" There was always a threat of crime happening, no matter where you lived, but Gotham was especially bad for it, and how could someone live there without always being worried about getting mugged or murdered?
