faolan littleruby I'm a big fan of using bold colours for baby blankets instead of pastels
Good instinct -- I know I've seen in a lot of different sources that the best colors for a baby's room are bold primary colors -- red, yellow, and blue. Something to do with the way an infant's vision is fine-tuning and learning to focus.
littleruby I've got some requests for washable chair covers for relatives with pets so this conversation is certainly helpful in choosing which yarn to go with for those projects.
Ah... FYI, it's really, truly effing amazing how deeply fur can wedge itself. Be advised. sweatdrop
Same! Plus, how many pale blue/pink/yellow/green/white things can you get before they all start to look alike? My own eyes start to cross when I look at the baby clothes in the closet because they're alllll pale green/yellow/white since we didn't find out sex. Baby toys come in bright colours so blankets should too. wink Oh jeez, my mom has 3 cats and a dog and I swear I still find fur attached to clothes weeks after visiting. The way she explained it, they're looking for something they can throw over the seats to protect from fur/dirt/claws and pull off when company comes over (and therefore leave a clean chair underneath). So fur-attractiveness would be an asset in this case (bonus points if you can sit on it and the fur stays attached to the cover! wink ) Mom got the idea for crochet covers since I made a blanket for my dad a couple of years ago when he was sick and they have it folded up on the back of a recliner when not in use. The cats will pull off any furniture cover mom tries to use (or get under it) but will happily lay on top of "dad's blanket". She's hoping to trick them I think. xD Her cats are sneaky though so we'll see if it works. wink

I know what you mean! Not like I remember it, but I'm told my room was like, "PRIMARY COLORS!" rofl They even painted the fronts of the three drawers in my little dresser red, yellow, and blue. So when I was like three or so and got my "big bed", and my grandmother took me to pick out my new curtains and bedspread, what did I choose? Little pink roses. 
Hahahaha! When my grandma passed away a couple years ago, my mom brought her cat back home with her. Wait, let me be more specific. My grandma's declawed black Persian cat. Who hates to be brushed. She doesn't just shed hairs -- she sheds clumps. At least that makes it easy to pick up, for the most part!
Hm... if it were me, I'd probably use a mandala type of pattern... this one, maybe. Or... haha, this one I bet would collect hair the best! rofl

Not like I remember it, but I'm told my room was like, "PRIMARY COLORS!" rofl They even painted the fronts of the three drawers in my little dresser red, yellow, and blue. I saw someone on Ravelry spun their dogs fur once and it looked very nice, almost like mohair. I think that'd make the best yarn choice for a fur-catcher since like-attracts-like! xd I like the look of the mandalas and they'd probably look/work best for the dining room chairs since there's no fabric back on them. Mom's cats like to hide under the table since they rarely use it and the chairs are pretty gross by now. That'd probably be a great gift for her, mandalas to use as chair covers for when the humans sit at the table. smile (I always use a bath towel haha, not as pretty). Never even thought of that until you mentioned it! I was thinking of runner-style blankets for the living rooms since then only the arms would be exposed. Most of the cats seem to sleep in the groove of recliners where the seat and back meet or on the back of the recliners. I'll show some options to everyone and see what they think would work/look best in their house. smile It'll probably be next Christmas by the time they all get them anyway, haha

faolan lol We just reupholstered our dining room chairs a few months ago -- guess why! xd Except for the Persian, ours are pretty much outdoor cats, though our annual "indoor manners" refresher day is coming right up (two black cats, two black with white markings, the fifth one's a tortie -- they stay in for Halloween). Ooh, that sounds cool... I bet you could even make arm covers to match, come to think of it. The dining room set had belonged to my grandmother and had been in storage for 20+ years (ironically, since the last time it'd been reupholstered). It made a world of difference. The set that my parents have belonged to my other grandmother and I'd love to redo the chairs next summer if we have the chance. SO discovered he really likes doing woodwork/upholstery when we were renovating our house so it'd be a good project for him, especially since there wouldn't be a rush on finishing. Oh my gosh, you're busy with 5! I bet you could make quite a bit of yarn with all that shedded fur. xd My mom's three are outdoor cats as well; they're forever driving her nuts with the in-out-in-out. Very smart to keep them in on Halloween. Not only to keep them from getting scared by fire works and kids in costumes but to keep them safe from people who sadly target black cats and hurt them on that night. Breaks my heart that there are people who could do that. sad Oh the arm covers are smart! I wonder if I should do a lowercase t shape or separate fitted pieces like some furniture comes with. Hmm... decisions, decisions. You sound like me with the delayed gifts! I bet she'll be very surprised and appreciative that you were so dedicated to work on a gift for her that took that long! wink I figured, this year I can easily bang out hats & mittens for all of them and that way they're assured a gift. Then I can take my time on the chair covers and it won't be a big deal if they don't get them this year, and I'll have a head start on next year (I always say I should start Christmas "shopping" earlier!).

Since I now have my buttons back in order to add photos, here are some of the blanket(s) I made with this pattern! The original: Slightly modified version (sc/hdc/dc repeat instead of sc/dc/dc): The ivory blanket photo was taken pre-wash&dry. The type of yarn and tighter stitching didn't make for a great drape right away but it improved after washing.
