Zane didn’t have to wait too long before the human returned to the room with a plate of food for him, already he could guess the contents on the plate without even looking. Probably something cut up and warmed to seem appetizing, yet very much dead. When would these humans learn that dead fish begin to decoy immediately after death, it was disgusting and he would rather starve than have to scarf that down. To the human’s usual greeting, Zane just blankly stared at her while she approached the tank watching her ever move as was the norm. He had given up a long time ago on trying to communicate with the land dwellers, it had never stopped them from showing compassion or mercy in the past so he had entirely stopped trying to reason with them as it was a waste of effort. His silence however didn’t seem to deter this female from talking out loud to him like he was a child or a pet; this annoyed him greatly. He often found himself wishing that she would trip and fall into his tank, than he would show her how much he cared about her and her wrecked kind. As the contents of the plate was dropped onto the surface of the water, Zane stared at the squid and octopus with mild surprise as it wasn’t the usual cod or herring but rather something that looked fairly appetizing. It only took two words to remind the mer of why they wanted him to eat at all. He was their prisoner, there test subject to break and slice open for their experiments and nothing more. That alone gave him the strength to turn his gaze away from the food and ignore the growls from his empty stomach as he moved away to a different corner of his bare and empty tank.

With nothing else better to do, Zane let his thoughts drift back to the oceans and the many decades he has lived free within those blue waters with the ability to go wherever he wanted whenever he wanted. Although he knew of another much larger tank connecting to the one he was currently occupying filled with rock and coral to make it feel somewhat like home, the humans haven’t let him wonder that tank for sometime. Something about it being too difficult to re-acquiring him for more testing with all the obstacles to go around to get him, yes they could shock the waters and stun him but he was making that more and more difficult by hiding and setting traps to harm any who tried. Zane’s resourcefulness was proving to be a nuisance and so they put him in here where he couldn’t hide or fight back and where they could watch him constantly to observe his recovery and behavior. For several months that behavior has deteriorated to what it has become now, stillness and from what the humans describe as laziness. They couldn’t be any farther from the truth, for the true reason for his slow movements and lingering was due to one simple factor...pain. Although he was good at hiding it, the experiments done to him were both physically and emotionally scaring and even though his tail had healed externally from the last torture it still hurt too much to want to use completely. This was another thing the humans seemed to fail at understand, even if the wounds seem to have healed on the surface they were still healing internally to regrow the muscle and damaged tendons. Currently Zane was only a little more than half recovered from the last tail hacking, but the humans wouldn’t see or know this unless he told them which he had no desire to do. Main reason why, well would they listen this time? Not likely. They have never cared in the past so what’s changed to make them start now. Nothing.

So preoccupied he was by his inner thoughts, Zane failed to see nor hear the top hatch of the tank slide open and was caught completely off guards moments later when something rather large splashed in the water directly behind him. In a sudden and sharp flourish, he was facing this new threat with his hands automatically in a defensive position in front of him. At first he didn’t know what it was, the bubbles were still surfacing from the impact shrouding the object in question in a disorienting blur. It was the continuous thrashing the lead Zane to believe that they dumped some living creature in the tank with him, a dolphin or seal perhaps. Something during the next few moments confused him though, as the bubbles dissipated he saw a large tail tangled in a net thrashing wildly, some skin that looked a tad bit tanner than his own and long dark red hair. It took a good second for the truth to dawn on him and another few to make sure that what he was staring at was in fact a mermaid, another just like him. His face frozen in shock, Zane stayed where he was as the mermaid was able to escape the net and somehow not notice him staring at her in sadness. That sadness very quickly escalated to rage as his eyes moved away from the mermaid to the side of the tank where hidden in the darkness sat the human responsible for everything. “So that’s what you were up to, damn scum.” The merman nearly growled as he clenched his fists beside him and wished the human would have the balls to face him one on one, he would take great pleasure ripping out his heart and tearing him to shreds to feed to the fishes. It only angered Zane more to see that all knowing smirk off the half illuminated face of his tormentor and those dark cold eyes staring back at him always watching. Life as he knew it was going to get a hell of a lot worse.

((Sorry it took so long to post, one of the girls at work just up and quit so I am taking her shifts until we can hire a new person to help with the work load. Akki wasn't able to make a single rip into the tight rope binding her hands together, and it only seemed like it was tightening the more she tried to wriggle her hands free or bite it off. It was really starting to hurt now so she stopped trying to get it off for the moment. She was so surprised when she heard a sound behind her, that she jumped with a small yelp of surprise and she turned around to see a merman behind her. But he wasn't looking at her, but at something else beyond the tank. Staring at him for a moment, she thought he was rather attractive... though obviously starving and wounded. What happened to him? She wasn't too sure what was going on, or where she was for that matter, but she did know that she was in big trouble if a merman was there trapped as well. Especially since he looked like he'd been there for a long time in order to be in that condition. He had sharp and alluring blueish - silver eyes that drew the eyes to them immediately. His skin a sharp contrast to his scales and black hair, but it all suited him so well it was hard to look away. She had never seen a merman as strikingly attractive but also obviously well versed in fighting and hunting all in one mix. The more attractive ones seemed to not focus on the hunts but their looks mostly, acting a lot like the mermaids in that area since mermaids rarely had a need to hunt for themselves. Didn't mean they didn't know how to either though.

Finally forcing herself to concentrate on something besides the attractive male, she followed his line of sight to the human that captured her. "Ah! It's that guy....! " She declared angrily under her breath. She then started to try and find any possible way to escape, but since she was so new to the entire idea of being a hostage, study subject or anything of the sort, she wasn't aware of the obvious bait that Noctis had placed long ago, or the fact it was a trap. Above their heads was a cage like door to a platform next to it and a ladder that led up to said platform from the cage door. It had no lock and only a simple lever above the bars to open it. If she jumped high enough, she could grab the bars and open it.

But with her hands still bound, there was very little she could do by the time she jumped up there. All she really could do was hold onto the bars and try to reach the lever, but knew she would not succeed. Finally letting out a soft sigh, she turned away from the escape door downheartedly. There wasn't anything she could use to cut her rope either. There was only one large rock that could be good enough to sleep against or something, and the only real hiding spot in the entire tank she was in. But it was probably that mermans bed and home and so she could not intrude on it without risking his anger at her.

Now that she was more aware of the merman, plus the two people watching them outside the tank, she was feeling very shy and self-conscious for several reasons. First obvious reason, was because she was being watched, a second reason could be because she was near an attractive merman who was still a stranger and she didn't know how he would react to her. The rest were hard to name at the moment but it could possibly be considered that she was self-conscious of her own appeal, or lack thereof, because of the merman near by. She wasn't known as the most appealing mermaid at home, that much she knew. If she had known she was going to come across a merman like him, she might've used more attractive accessories that she saved for going out, rather than the simple flower in her hair.

But she also had another problem... how was she going to get home and what was she going to do now? Her family would never be able to find her no matter how hard they looked around the ocean... she wasn't even in the ocean. Finally though, she glanced back to the merman and decided to speak up at least a little bit. "Um.... excuse me... Do you know when I will be able to go home?" she asked softly, hoping that maybe there was a time limit and she could go home after whatever she was brought here for was done.

(alright, no problems XD thanks for letting me know.)

Noctis Lu Baven

Noctis was intently watching the mer's interaction even as Avalon came over to him and spoke to him. "Not to worry, just take notes on everything that happens for the moment. Don't worry about feeding Zane either, he will have to eat now if he wants to keep up his strength to fight me or you back from touching her. He'll eat soon enough, he'll even start asking for his food I'll bet. Especially if we don't give either of them any food for a while. The new mer will likely start getting hungry and since she can't hunt for her food she won't know what to do. Since Zane has been here a while, he'll figure out he needs to start asking for food or they'll both starve instead. Plus the beauty of it all is that they can't die that easily even if starving. I'll give them a couple days to get to know one another, and then I'll start up on my research and testing once more." he responded to Avalon's questions easily enough with a smirk on his face.

His last helper was all too concerned about what Noctis was doing to Zane. When his testing got too rough, the helper would beg and plead for him to stop, or even going so far as to let Zane escape back into the water to escape the next round of testing. They even got in his way on other important studies by letting Zane escape from wherever Noctis had him, such as a small cage. But Avalon didn't seem to mind how Noctis conducted his research and tests. But he was also sure that that was bound to change with what Noctis had in mind for the mermaid. The females always seem to resonate with another female and thus react as such. But he didn't care, Avalon was being paid to do her job and if she failed to do so, he wouldn't pay her. It was that simple.

"Oh, Avalon, I don't want you feeding them for a while, I want them to speak to us when they want something. It's time to get Zane working in our favor rather than against us. So you have no need to go near the tank. Also leave her bindings as they are. If Zane has any sense of wanting to help her, he will, we have no need to interfere. Of course, if her hands start turning odd colors I might be forced to do something about it, but until then do nothing." he ordered lightly as he watched Akki finally cease trying to remove the binds on her delicate wrists.

It was rather obvious the ropes were causing her pain now, and the red coloring beneath the rope and the slight color on the rope indicated that she was bleeding a bit as well. He estimated, that if the rope wasn't trifled with again, then in about 4 more hours her hands would begin to feel numb. It would be nearly 8 hours to a day though when the odd colors would start appearing due to lack of the normal blood flow.

Other than that, the obvious anger and rage directed at him from Zane was all too amusing. The merman seemed to get a clue as to what Noctis was planning, but no one really knew what he was planning because he always changed his mind on the spot to do something else. He was unpredictable that way.

Avalon watched the mermaid in an awe. She was so beautiful and the woman balanced between who was the most amazing of the two. The male or the female ? She turned her head to Noctis when he spoke and her hand holding the pen started running through the empty notebook in front of her filling it with lines quickly while she didn't even have to look at the page. She had practiced that skill enough during her school years and now she was perfect at it. She even took some pictures with an ipod hanging on her waist belt where she had necessary to her work stuff so she wouldn't need to walk away to grab something, reducing the danger of missing something important on her study.

She had just started writing down the mermaid's movements after finishing Zane's when her boos finished speaking about his new 'evil plan' in order to actually make Zane start asking for things and decide to speak to them..it would probably work, plus it would give her the chance for more notes and new discoveries to work on "ok sir, i won't be feeding him at all..there is some squid and octopus in his tank already..i fed him before the mermaid arrives but he touched nothing as usual. I was thinking...maybe it's better to train them somehow in order to make them come to this tank when we need them and swim to the other one with the corals the rest of the time? we can grow the tube connecting them a bit so they can come and go by themselves. I believe this will give us more chances to actually study them in an environment that is similar to theirs. I'm sure that after thy get to know each other they will start taking advantage of it"she suggested, it being something she though while watching the mermaid trying to hide somehow from them.

She noticed Zane seemed angry and he even growled something but it was to his own language and she didn't understand it..she copied the sounds though to her notebook ...it seemed like a curse..did she just learnt a mercurse? The thought caused her to giggle inside but on the outside she just smiled faintly to herself. Another thing she didn't know though was whether or not Zane was mad because Noctis captured another one of his kind,, or because there was an invader in his territory...if he was feeling as if the tank was a territory...she guessed they would find out soon judging by his attitude towards the girl..maybe they would be surprised "do you think he will ask us to untie her sir?"she asked while writing this question down adding a question mark to answer this later. She had a different subject for questions and it seemed very helpful to her. The rope must be very painful judging by the pink water around it indicating she was bleeding..did she fight so much? or was her boss trying to show her how strong he was? That he was the dominant one ?

Narrowing his gaze even more out of hatred for the human responsible for his wounds and his imprisonment, Zane remained quite oblivious of the mermaids actions for his anger and rage kept the focus on the current threat. Had this been some other situation or place, he might have considered this meeting a blessing or miracle for he had search long and hard to find others of his kind for decades with no luck. Had this been in the blue waters shielded by the white surf, he might have found her quite beautiful and may have even considered taking her as a mate however here such a possibility was far from his mind. If this had been any time or place besides here and now, Zane would have rejoiced and abandoned the solitary life of the lone hunter he had known for far too long. Reality however made this current situation a great tragedy for them both, for he know what horrors this mermaid would see and endure and knew too that there was very little he could do to prevent it from happening. Yes... He could try to fend the humans off and sacrifice his own health and soul to protect her from the torture and pain, but these humans had far too many resources to get around him and it was far too easy to remove him if he became too much of a problem. Zane knew that they would do that very thing if he got in there way which really only left one way to protect her, he had to get her out of here and soon. The question was how...

Lips curling into a deep frown out of pity as a simple question directed to him by the mermaid became a very difficult one to answer, Zane gave the humans one last hard glare before turning his back to them completely to focus his attention on her. He considered how he should answer the question for a short moment thinking of a way to make its sound less dreadful. However having always been the type to tell the truth and the whole truth, he couldn’t find an easy or gentle way of telling her that she might not ever return home let alone see beyond these glass walls. Finally with a long drawn out sigh, Zane looked the mermaid straight in the eyes before telling her words that no one would ever want to hear. “You won’t be going home any time soon...or at all.” He let the words sink in before directing her gaze back toward the glass and the land dwellers watching on the other side. “Not while the humans hold us here against our will for their tests and experiments.” Something he said seemed to confuse her for she seemed puzzled, it wasn’t until he realized that she was indeed from the ocean and probably never seen how evil humans could be to know where he had errored. “Torture and pain, that is all you will have to look forward to; that is unless I can find a way to get you out of here before that crazy psycho decides to go knife happy again.”

Zane was serious and it showed quite visibly if one were to look more closely at his injured tail where countless scars barely visible to the naked eyes maimed his once flawless scaled form. Taking that moment to let the mermaid realize her fate, he let his eyes drift over her form slowly noting unsurprisingly that her wrists had been bound by tight thin rope so tight that it was cutting into flesh. Sadly its something that happens quite frequently here, the humans would bind the wrists and secure them along with their strong tail so that they can cut or rip into flesh without too much resistance. They never untied them either, Zane would always have to bite at the ropes often times for hours just to get them off his bleeding wrists. Thankfully he had learned over the years how to quickly undo the knots with as minimal amount of pain as possible. “Here, let me get those off you.” He said calmly as he slowly approached while waiting for her to respond and let him help. Using his teeth, he tugged on the knot gently working to loosen the rope’s ends and then proceeding to undo the rope knot completely letting it fall to the bottom of the tank when it was free. "My name is Zane and I will do what can to help you get out of here, somehow." He had already tried countless times to escape, but so far all his efforts have been for vain.

Noctis Lu Baven

Noctis glanced at his assistant with a look of 'are you crazy?' in his eye. "You are forgetting, he's got the brain and thinking of a man, not a fish entirely. He can't be trained that way. He's always resisted any attempts before and I don't think it's going to change any time soon. Other than that, you should know by now that Zane does everything he can to foil my research. But not to worry, once things slide into place, he will be more... agreeable with time." he assured her smoothly.

Zane looked as if he was growling, but with the unfortunate fact that the human ears could not hear them while they were under the water prevented Noctis from actually knowing what they were saying. However, even though he could lip read, he couldn't understand their language though he was slowly learning what the words were. It was a slow process since Zane hardly spoke. But now that there was someone to speak to that was likely to change. "No, he'll do it himself rather than risking us to handle her again so soon after leaving my hands. It's her fault for tightening the rope to begin with. Unless you know how to untie yourself it'll only worsen with struggle. I'm not so cruel as to make a tie that tight to start with. I know how fragile a womans wrists can be compared to that of the mans." he stated easily enough to her second question, glancing up at Avalon with a smirk as he took her writing hand and held her wrist gently in one of his.

Maybe he was teasing his assistant a bit, but that was ok, he paid her enough and as long as he didn't go too far, it should be alright. At least according to his standards, he didn't know about hers. "Like yours for example. They are perfectly capable to do many things, but so much easier to hurt or maim with the right pressure."

Avalon kept writing although she was frustrated she couldn't hear what they were saying..oh that was so bad. She wanted to know more. Even if she didn't know their language it was still fascinating. Zane though seemed rather angry and that made her even more curious. Her previous question was soon answered though as she noticed Zane was actually trying to untie the mermaid instead of threatening her. "I know he is as intelligent as a human, sir...i just think that he will want the new mermaid to be as comfortable as he can offer her. I believe he will be more cooperative if we give him the comfort he had once upon a time..don't forget that just as we would possibly protect other humans in his case then he will want to protect her as well"she shrugged lightly "while you were gone i worked on something..it's a small device that can be put into the tank and will absorb the vibrations when they speak and will send them to another machine like a radar..i didn't manage to make it clear enough to give us full words but we will have the vocals for now"she said referring to the black box and the speaker in her room. She had to find a way to spend her free time after al and sewing wasn't something she was particularity fond of as she always wanted to do something more exciting. In order to make that speaker she had studied many days and had actually started making it before she was hired for the job mostly because she hoped to find a job that would include underwater investigations so she had enough time to work on it a little bit more while he was gone and Zane wasn't doing anything special.

She felt her wrist being gripped while she was writing and then she raised her gaze at her boss "you like that don't you sir? watching delicate things being capable of doing many things and then hurt them as if they were nothing"she said to him not fearing to tell him her opinion. Her gaze fell on his grip. He was so gentle yet she knew he could just bent her hand and break her wrist without even put any effort. Too bad he was so..cold hearted...if he wasn't so cruel maybe she would be even interested in creating something with him...a relationship maybe? She wasn't against that but now she wasn't interested either...she didn't like how he treated others although he seemed not to be very strict with her. Maybe because she was obeying him without a second word. She blinked as she stopped thinking these things and looked up at him "maybe we should start watching them again...you want me to keep notes of their first reaction now don't you , sir?"she asked him

Akki watched the dark mer as he stared at her, seemingly searching for a way to tell her the answer she needed. However, as he sighed, she had a sense of dread start to sink in. Then the words she was hoping wouldn't come, were spoken and the dislike he held of the humans was completely clear. Glancing at the man that had taken her away from everything she knew, she wasn't sure how to react as Zane continued to speak. The mention of tests and experiments confused her a bit and she didn't quite understand what he meant. Tests were such things like races and the likes, endurance or other kinds of physical activity to test your skills. But then it was made clear what he meant as he spoke of the true meaning behind the humans intentions.

Even as he gave her a small slight hope that there was a possibility to get out, but she couldn't help but take notice that he didn't include himself in the escape idea. She somehow didn't like the idea of escaping alone due to the fact that she could easily tell from his scars, that Zane had been here for a very long time. But she couldn't find the words to speak that would possibly help the situation, so she simply looked down sadly. Both for the fact that she couldn't go home, that she wouldn't see her family again, and for the fact that the both of them were in a situation that almost looked hopeless.

After a few minutes of silence, she heard him speak up and for a moment, she didn't understand until he motioned to the rope binding her wrists. Nodding her head at his offer, she remained silent as he freed her hands slowly. His touch was gentle and like any other man, had a touch of roughness. But it didn't hurt as much as when she tried to free herself at least. Rubbing her wrists carefully to ease the sting of the rope that remained, she stared at him for a moment before speaking up. "I'm Akki... and I'll help any way I can to get us both out of here... I can see how much you've endured." she offered softly, giving a small smile before that disappeared again. "When we escape... I'm sure you would be welcome among my family and friends too... so..." she had no idea what she was trying to say... but she started saying something she wasn't sure how to finish.

Judging by the sudden silence after having given the mermaid his answer, Zane could only guess how hard this new was for her and although he had tried to make it sound less devastating there was no hiding the weight of his words, but it couldn’t be helped he guessed. If he had softened his words or lied about the truth of the situation to make her believe otherwise, she would be traumatized by what she might encounter and at least this way she could prepare for the worse. Still the tension growing made him regret ever saying anything at all to his new tank mate, he didn’t need her to worry about him. He was perfectly capable of mending his own wounds and staying alive, if anything she should be fearing for her own life and should be focusing all her efforts on thinking of a way to escape. Shaking his head even as Akki began to mention trying to get both of them out of here, Zane knew that it was likely going to be impossible to get free from this human’s grasp. Since the day he killed those two people in self defense, this man as been obsessed with causing a great deal of pain and suffering and seems to go to greater lengths to ensure that he remains alive and miserable. He had gotten the impression that he killed someone very close to this one and although the details of how he was able to kill them was still fuzzy one thing was for sure. If he were to finally succeed on escaping it wouldn’t matter how far or how deep he swam, this man will hunt him down and catch him again. It seemed as though the only way to escape all of this was in death, which was probably the reason he had stopped eating.

However as Akki mentioned family and friends Zane stopped cold in his tracks, “...you mean that are others? How...how many?” The discovery that he wasn’t the only merfolk out there already baffled him since he had spent so long searching for others like himself, so long in fact that he had thought himself the last. But this news that there were more somewhere out in the wide ocean made him surprisingly shocked, if there had been a pod out there he would have seen signs. ‘Where had they been hiding?’ He wondered to himself part of him wanting to ask and yet at the same time not wanting to know. If somehow the humans were able to discover such a location it would only be a matter of time before his previous claim of being the last became a reality. It only took a quick glance at his tormentor to remind him how fast that fate would befall his kind. He couldn’t let that happen and if them meant sacrificing his own freedom to keep his people safe from this man’s clenches...so be it. “I won’t be escaping with you anywhere so get that notion out of your head.” Zane said plainly as he shifted away from Akki while still facing her. “These humans are trouble for our kind and the one here has this obsession with keeping me here, so if WE were to escape I would only be leading him to the rest of us that remain. I would never forgive myself if that were to happen, that is why I must stay here.” It was quite obvious that these words were painful for him to say, but it was also clear by seeing his hard focused eyes that he was determined to do what he thought was right for their kind.

Changing his focus by looking around the tank for ideas of an escape, Zane looked carefully around the top of the tank at the 'traps’ the human as set up as a decoy. In the years of living here, the mer had learned the truth of these deceptions as there would only bring pain and give the humans a bit of amusement. There was no chance in breaking the tempered glass that held them prisoner for it was several inches thick and the sliding cover over the tank appeared to be equally as thick. Really the only way out was to have them take them out for their tests, which left them at a full disadvantage. Unless they were lucky and the humans failed to secure them properly there was little hope on escaping, but if fate was with them, maybe he could find a way to break free and provide cover for Akki’s escape. “The chance may never come, but if it does and we do get free from here, know that I will only accompany you until you know your way. I know how this human thinks and he will follow me to the end of the world until he causes my demise. That should give you plenty of time to swim under his radar and return to your family safely, in other words I am the decoy. Until such a time comes the best we can do is be patient and wait.” Returning his gaze back at the humans as if trying to determine when they would start there tests again, Zane knew there was little else to do within this bare tank but wait. He was getting tired of waiting around like this, maybe if they did escape and he was able to lead the humans off Akki’s trail, maybe it would be best to give himself to the sharks than return to this endless hell.

Noctis Lu Baven

Noctis seemed to completely ignore her suggestions but he did consider her words at least. Her little project to be able to hear the sounds under the water sounded beneficial but even he had thought of something like that so he was curious as to how her machine was different from his. He'd give her the benefit of the doubt though.

However her words as he gripped her had him smirking a bit. "Is that what you think I'm doing? You think I like hurting others just because I can? The only one I hurt with joy is Zane because he deserves it. I'm not completely cruel and insane you know." he teased lightly as he let go of her wrist at last. Then turning back to the mers he remained silent for a good little while before suddenly speaking up again as though he finally thought of something, but really he was usually like that.

"For this week, keep them in that tank, and if they behave they'll be allowed into the other one. We'll be starting the initial tests on the female tomorrow." he informed her lightly before going back to silence.

Avalon couldn't but comment on his words about delicate beings or things and the fact he seemed to particularly hate Zane "but why do you say Zane deserves it? what did he do?"she asked "is it because he wants his freedom?" and then her face changed into a more playful one "as for cruel and insane....hmm i don't know...i have the second one for granted though, sir"she teased as well just because he was in the mood for that as well. She wouldn't dare do that if he would be in a bad mood...bad mood for Noctis meant bad mood for whoever worked with him..in that case it was Avalon.

She looked at the mers as well and kept some notes...well actually she just wrote they seemed to have a conversation..Zane seemed surprised over soemthing..maybe the mermaid had told him something he didn't know...about her? about the ocean? she couldn't know. At Noctis' words she nodded do you want me to take her out a little before your arrival? or do you want to have the pleasure of torturing her yourself if she resists?"she asked "or you won't torture her because she is not zane?"she asked teasingly again now turning to look at the merpeople...she would talk to them tomorrow...when he wouldn't be there. She would ask them to behave so they would be moved to the other tank..she would even try to explain some more things to the mermaid about the place as Zane would make them seem like the bad people of the story...and maybe zane could give her the answers as to why her boss hated him so much

Surprised at Zane's sudden words, Akki stuttered over her own words as she responded. "Of course there are others. There are many of us, there is a city, hidden of course, with many living there. The mers are not extinct and we certainly are not in any danger of being discovered either." she answered the best she could with his sudden interest. But then he showed signs that made her think that he was hiding his true feelings as he spoke again.

Glancing at the humans and then back to Zane, she frowned a bit. "Why would this human want to keep you no matter what? It is not possible to track us once in the ocean. The waters are so vast and deep no one can possibly know where we are. Plus I know that you are feeling homesick. I can see it in your eyes. You've been here for far too long. I bet you've even forgotten how the current feels beneath the waves. You long to escape as much as I do, if not more because I have given you some hope just by being here. Doesn't the fact that you and I are here together mean that there is still something to look forward to? Two minds working together is better than one tired mind." She asked softly, determined to renew his fighting spirit and hope and then soon they could both escape, when she figured out how that is. Her naivete refreshing to some and her optimism others have claimed envy over, but she had never swayed from her beliefs and she wasn't going to start now.

From his talk of decoys and drawing this mans attention, she got a bit upset with his depressing talk. He spoke as if he had no other choice. "Dummy. Have you forgotten already? If that man is as bad as you say, what makes you think he'll willingly let me go even if you are a decoy? He took the time and energy to capture me himself. No matter how much I hurt him, he wouldn't let me go until I was secure on the boat. I don't know about you, but I think he may have something in store that requires both of us. Which means he won't let me go either." she spoke harshly while crossing her arms, before she lightened the mood by grinning. "So, therefore, there is only one option! We leave together and escape together! There is no other choice!" Ok so maybe she was being too optimistic, but he seemed like he need a bit of a push to get out of that dark cloud that has been drifting over his head like a depression.

Zane was taken back and utterly stunned to learn that not only were there some other merfolk out there in the vast oceans, but there was also a city hidden somewhere from the prying eyes of humans full of his people. Hidden well enough that even he couldn’t find any clue or trace of their existence in a handful of decades if not centuries he had searched for them. He could barely believe the words to be true, yet Akki herself was proof enough to show him that he wasn’t alone anymore. The knowledge seemed to settle some of Zane’s nerves, but it didn’t even start to damper the feeling of dread hanging over his head. “I am relieved to hear that there are others and that they thrive hidden from the surface world, however it only makes the it harder to know I will never see such a city. Harder still that you may never return where you belong, for if you did it would likely endanger their peace and safety.” He stated knowingly as he turned his eyes inward to remember the countless encounters he had with fishing vessels tracking and dogging him like prey. Though he didn’t know how they were able to track him with such accuracy, but he knew that in all likely hood the humans currently holding them had such tactics or devices at their disposal to use on them if they were lucky enough to escape together. Which only furthered his own reason as to why he couldn’t escape with Akki, splitting up and drawing them away seemed to be the only logical option.

Bringing his steel blue eyes up to listen to Akki speak, Zane couldn’t hide the frown deepening on his own face as he recalled the details of what had happened that made him this man’s sole target to inflicting horrific torture. Just remembering the pain made him flinch visibly as he lowered his gaze and turned away from the mermaid to hide his own moment of weakness. “I fear I may have killed someone close to him, though I remember not how I had done it. All I remember from that night was the pain and the blood.” So much blood in fact that it had tainted the water around him for a few days before the filtration system was able to cycle it all out. Zane shook the vivid images from his head for it wasn’t the only moment he had been in that much suffering and knowing his tormentor, it was far from the last. “Never underestimate the will of that one, if there is a way he will exploit it to the fullest.” He warned coldly when he turned back to give the man an angry glare knowing all too well what extremes he will enforce to get his desired result. He knew too what happens when met with resistance, yet Zane still refused to give him the satisfaction of breaking his body, mind or spirit.

“Homesick or not, you being here doesn’t change anything, it only means that I won’t be suffering here alone.” He said grimly while keeping his eyes on the humans before finally letting a heavy sigh out and drifting off toward the back of the tank as he considered what else the mermaid had to say. She was right he knew, once this human has his sites on something he wouldn’t easily let it go. Even if he was forced to choose which one of them to chase down and capture, it wouldn’t stop him from seeking out the other in time. “Alone or together, it won’t matter now. It won’t matter for a long while I suspect, till then there isn’t much sense worrying about what we cannot control.” Zane stated flatly as he eventually settled down beside the rock in the tank, his only cover from the prying eyes of the humans. But even then he had always felt like he was constantly being watched, in all likely hood he was.

((As of now, it looks like I won’t have any time off to settle down and start posting on a regular basis until August. Probably won’t post again until after the 4th of July, just way too busy and my body seems to desire sleep more than anything.))

Noctis Lu Baven

Noctis didn't answer her questions when she began to inquire his meaning of being cruel to Zane. He simply looked at her in light amusement as she continued to speak as though not bothered that he wasn't responding to almost any of her questions and words. Just a small light smirk in place on his face as he watched her.

Finally it seemed like she had given up on her small quest to figure him out even a little since she turned back to take some more notes. Then after his light statement, she questioned him again. "I'll take her out myself. As Zane will soon be aware of my purpose for her being here, I'll need to work quickly. Soon my dear Avalon, we will have our very own mer family. We just need to watch and wait and maybe give a little push or shove here and there. By the end of the month, Zane will have coupled with our little mermaid. By then Zane will feel the need to escape to protect his family. And that will be the time to hurt him more than he's ever felt and finally figure out what I want to know." Noctis stated, smirking at Akki and Zane darkly as he revealed what he had in mind. He was going to foster the relationship between the two, then tear them apart and hurt Zane in the worst way possible. Then finally, he could learn the secret that Zane has kept from him since the day his father died.

Sure he would hurt Akki too as a result for his intent to cause Zane the pain he wanted him to feel. Both the loss and the mental pain and maybe a mix of physical pain that Noctis had in mind for him for that day. The sadistic smirk he was well known for finally surfaced on his lips. Okay maybe he was a little sadistic, but only where Zane was concerned. Zane deserves the pain Noctis had planned for him. The pain that he'd so far experienced weren't enough for the merman to repeat the same scene that caused his father to die. Plus, if he only experimented on the mermaid, and left Zane alone, Zane would be sure to feel more frustrated. Noctis knew full well the merman wasn't completely healed, but by the time Noctis put his plans into motion, he was sure that he would be healed to near perfection.

With those thoughts in mind, he finally left the room to go rest for a few hours. The comfort of a bed inviting compared to the weeks on a boat without so much as a pillow. "Be sure to get some rest Avalon, tomorrow the fun begins." he called back as he left.

Avalon wasn't paying much attention to him being busy in keeping her notes. She only put notice in him saying he would be the one taking the mermaid out of the water tomorrow and just replied with a "as you wish sir"still keeping her notes to study them later. This was something she liked to do. She had bought some books with legends and information about merfolks and she liked staying up late studying them..plus it helped her come to facts and new discovering about them.

However her attention was back at him after he spoke of his plans about the two prisoners..so that was why he wanted a female mermaid..she should have imagined it! She hoped he wouldn't hrut the baby though...that was soemthing beyond her mind..even if they weren't humans they were equal to them ..their only difference was their form and home. Humans lived on land merfolks in the sea...that was the only difference. Hurting the future baby was like hurting a human baby to her. When he started walking out she looked at him "goodnight sir..i will get rest"she said then walked closer to the tank not writing anymore. She looked at the two in admiration and especially the new mermaid. She was beautiful..very beautiful indeed and would be considered a model if she was a human/ She wondered if they wanted to eat but she didn't ask them..neither she tapped the glass. She just stood there watching them and thinking things about them different than noctis' She was actually thinking how it would be to be able to swim in the ocean...free from any worries..Flipping their scales could take them to the other side of earth but legs could do nothing unless they were in a car or a boat for large distances..of course merfolks couldn't get on land like they could go to their kingdom with boats but that was just a matter of equipment...really how would the world be if the merfolks could go on land and would socialize with humans on a daily basis? would they live in harmony or would the humans prove they were more like her boss?

She watched them some more then climb up the ladder leading t the top of their tank which helped her feed them and looked at them from above. She threw some more squid in there and looked at the mermaid "hey..."she said softly "you should eat...you must be exhausted"she just said then looked at both of them, Zane and the mermaid who's name was unknown "goodnight"she said and climbed off the ladder going back to her seat and taking her notes starting to clean the lab a bit , it being a job she had to do every night before leaving Zane alone
