Breeding

How the hell does it work?!

Though breeding is still somewhat of a mystery, the general consensus is that it requires a large amount of life energy, making it only possible to occur a few times a year at most without killing the parents. It's theorized that both Kage partners will give a piece of themselves towards the creation of new children bodies, while one or both parents will actively seek out lost souls to plant into their new children. Another theory is that they mate just like normal mammals, but through some magical process the babies receive a former soul-- though it does not explain same-gender Kage breedings. Overall, there are many rumors and ideas and even some far-fetched tales about how Kage actually breed.

In the end, all is known that is is an intimate act that leaves them in a weakened state, generally in dire need of their next life energy fix.

Life Energy

A mouthful of flesh or a soulful of energy.

Kage who are bonded with a human have an easy life, gently sapping away at their life energy like some kind of fleshy battery. However, for most Kage who live off the land, they must find other ways of gaining sustenance. Priestly and Spiritual Kage have an easier time than most, with Priestlies being able to siphon life energy from plants, the sky, and nature. Spirituals can pick up magical residue from the air and gain energy from it. The other species, however, often must resort to physical means of procuring life. Killing and consuming mammals will release their life energy, so it is much like the usual hunger of wild animals. However, certain species such as Temporal and Hell actively enjoy the hunt and are natural predators. Even if a steady life energy supply is available, these species would still rather kill for it.

To be drained of life energy feels much like if your arm was left in direct sunlight that slowly became hotter and hotter-- a prickly, burning sensation depending on how gently the offending Kage is leeching. If fast, desperate, and uncaring, it can feel like skin being ripped straight off-- or worse. If gentle and slow, it can feel like nothing at all, much like a mosquito bite (thought it leaves you weak rather than itchy).
