I name my Houndoom Cerberus
Relevance

Houndoom is a fire dark type dog pokemon with a Gothic design. Cerberus was known as the guardian of the gate to Hades in Roman myth. Cerberus has be depicted has a black 3 headed dog with the ability to breath fire to burn anybody who tried to enter Hades.

Style
How does it sound/feel?
It feels right especially when my pokemon uses flamethrower on other pokemon.

I must say that I have not heard that word used often in most settings. I like it!

Relevance:
Now the actual definition for the word mariner is: a person who directs or assists in the navigation of a ship; sailor.
Now Feraligatr is a water type, and mariners work on the water constantly, there isn't much of a direct link between the two.

The name does sound fairly cool, but it is just that disconnect between the meaning of the word
and the relevance of it that throws off its style points to me.

Overall:
That is a good nickname, but I would say look for some more aquatic terminology to use as a nickname.
I am sure you would be able to find a name that fits perfectly!
