on't you fret, my dear...
...t'll all be over soon.

"A new day always gives me hope."

When Belle realized, well at least the fact Daniel was someone before Regina was queen, the man gave a small and sullen nod. As if too embarrassed to admit, now that he knew the basics of what she had done, Daniel looked back to his now empty glass. He did not want anymore, but it was something to stare down to rather than the equally-broken-hearted woman. The queen may not have taken anything away from her, but like knowing your own kind; it was easy for Daniel to tell Belle had her emotional heart ripped out of her--only to hope it was not literal.

Looking over briefly to the window, seeing how the break of dawn was at the cusp of starting the day in Storybrooke, Daniel looked back to Belle to give a small nod.
"That will be good, thank you. And yes, please. Sunrises give new hope."

Belle could tell he was sleepy. The spell or curse he'd been under had obviously tired him out. She went to her small linen closet and brought out an extra pillow and a throw. Like most things in her home it had gathered the scent of jasmine and honeyed green tea. She gave him the items so he could make himself comfortable before walking towards the large window and opening the curtains.

She enjoyed this time of the day. The pink and blue-violet streaks in the sky cut through the night as if the day's colors were bleeding through. The town shifted from inky black to a faded blue-gray and it seemed to hold its breath. Mist from the lake eeked from the alleys and hovered around the cobblestones like a mystic layer.

"Daniel, do you love Regina?" she asked breaking the stillness of the morning.

"We will be free now."

Nodding his thanks once again to Belle, Daniel found comfort in the scent of the herbs; like something of memory from lifetimes ago. Positioning himself to face the window, he placed the pillow behind him and the throw over him. The throw covered most of him, but he did not mind it at all. There was something about the sunrise that always amazed the man; whether it reminded him of a young philly and her fresh youthful coat or a blend of dyes to create the colours of sewn fabric, Daniel could not say for sure. Either way, the small smile came back to his lips before letting out a sigh of content.

When Belle asked the question that probably lingered on her mind since the realization, Daniel carefully looked down to his lap. Part of him wanted to scream out the answer, but he did not know whether to scream out of shame or of pride. A few small moments of silence passed on by before the man mustered enough strength to speak.
”Do not know if I do or not.” This woman has been nothing less than kind to him and she deserved to hear the whole story. Or, possibly, someone needed to hear it. ”Before she became queen, we were to runaway together. It was her mother who encouraged her to marry the King. Snow White found out about her and I; but she told the little princess I was her happiness and the little girl wanted more than anything for her to be happy.” Daniel’s voice was gentle, but it was easy to hear through the silence of the loft and easy to notice his sentence structure was getting better while actually speaking. He then finally broke the staring contest between himself and his lap before looking back to the rays of gentle mist through the window.

”The night we were leaving and a week before the wedding, her mother caught us and wanted to give blessings. The last thing I remember was her screaming out my name and seeing a glowing beating crystalized heart in her mother’s hand. The next thing I knew, there was a doctor who seemed familiar to me, but I knew I never met him before. Out of fear and anger, I went to the one place I can recall the most; the stables.” Daniel took the liberty to not mention what he did to the doctor, but he then finally looked over to Belle. ”I was not me. There was something else within me that was worse; a monster. When she found me, she wanted to change me, but I could not forget the horror of the night in the stables. Her screams of terror and pain and the brief sight of her mother’s look when she held my heart. I begged her to do the only thing she could do, release me. And she did. Just like her mother did, but there were no screams and no sneering look. Just tears.”

Daniel tore his eyes away from the young woman as his sight was brought back to his lap. ”That is the Regina I know and love.”

If either of you cared about me, you would have listened...

Belle listened holding on to his every word. It made a frightening sort of sense. All of Regina's anger, her rage, her cruelty towards her... it was fueled by jealousy. The Queen wanted the world to suffer as she suffered. Is that what happened when you lost your true love? Is that what Belle would have become if she'd spent more time in that cell? She looked into Daniel's eyes but they quickly flickered to his lap. She could see the shame in his gaze; the sheer uncertainty.

"I was a Lady back in our world," she stated calmly, "my father was a Knight, and he'd inherited a little village that was our fiefdom. We didn't have a lot of money, but we were happy until the ogre wars. We did everything we could but we soon ran out of money and soldiers. We all had to make sacrifices, so I arranged my own marriage to a wealthy merchant's son. I didn't care as long as everyone was safe. The problem was, not even his money could save us anymore. We grew so desperate that my father made a deal with the Dark One and He agreed. His price for saving us all was me. I would become his servant for the rest of my life in return for our village's safety."

Her fingers curled around her cup of tea as if they could still recall the cool feel of his clothes. The memory of his eyes, his voice, his mannerisms... like a lion among mice.

"I agreed, and for many months I lived in the Dark Palace. I learned of his masks, his malevolent nature... his madness. Yet despite all of these things, I had his kindness. I did not fear him and he never once tried to harm me. I grew to love him..." she looked down, "but I knew what he was. I saw what he was capable of. He was... a 'heart thief', perhaps the one who invented such methods. He toyed with other's misery. I knew, deep down, I knew he could not love me. One day, he told me to go to town and fetch him straw. He said he never expected to see me again, and I secretly agreed with him. On the road, I met Regina. I didn't know who she was then but she knew me. She told me that if I were to kiss him, then the Dark One's curse would be lifted, and he could be an ordinary man."

She smiled and it was bittersweet.

"I wanted to believe her so badly. I didn't know... so I returned to the Dark Castle and I kissed him. As soon as the curse began to lift he grew angry at me. I'd never seen his rage directed at me... it was terrifying. He accused me of conspiring with Regina to take away his powers and then cast me out of his home. I was alone, with nowhere to go. Eventually the Queen's men found me and she... kept me. I've only been free for a few weeks now... and that was over 28 years ago."

She was silent bearing her own burden of shame for a moment before looking up at Daniel. Her eyes were blue, but they reflected the sky outside.

"I still love him, but he's still the same person," she admitted, "when we found each other, he was so angry at Regina I made him promise he wouldn't kill her. But then he released a creature to do it for him. I want to believe that he loves me... I want to believe that he truly cares... but he's the same monster he was before. I see the good in him, just like you remember the good in Regina. There is no shame in loving her. I love something Darker than her, I am in no position to judge you."

on't you fret, my dear...
...t'll all be over soon.

"Mother learned her magic from this man the villagers everywhere only call 'The Dark One'."

There was a bit of shame in his admittance to the Regina he once knew--which, from the sounds of it, was far different than anyone in this town has ever seen. When Belle started to speak of her story, Daniel oddly seemed interested in it. Whether it was the fact of these two souls were connected by some unusual way or the comfort of the young woman's voice, his mind could not determine for sure.

Daniel vaguely remembered the tales of the Ogre Wars. In a way, he was in it; though only to help out fellow traveling soldiers and tend to their horses. Even then, he was only a young boy and an apprentice to the former head stable-boy. Many villages and towns were in, or at the brink of, poverty if they were not careful enough with their resources--and Regina's parents' land were one of the few that had the opportunity to be so close to the King's own land. The mentioning of the deal between Belle's father and the Dark One, though, brought a curious look upon his face. He had heard that name before; but never had a face to the name. The name was from a distant and faint memory, but possibly nothing of true importance.

The Dark One, apparently, has a soft spot; but it seemed opposite of what Regina has become. There was, however, an involuntary tick from his left eye when she mentioned about the phrase he created earlier in the morning. His mind was not all there, but it did make sense since Regina's mother did take his heart; as did Regina herself. Listening onto Belle's story of how to break the Dark One's curse but only to fail and to be taken by the Queen.

Daniel's mind immediately went to the time-frame Belle stated.
"Do you know how long Regina had been queen?" If that was twenty-eight years ago, then how long had Daniel himself been dead?

Belle breathed in the morning breeze that entered past the curtains. It was calming in its own way, filled with the scent of pine and earth. Little birds sang happily as they welcomed the sunlight. He was the first she had spoken her story to. Funny, he was the only man who knew her tale...

"She had been Queen for six years before the curse was struck," Belle spoke quietly, "and we have been trapped in her curse for 28. None of us have aged. Our prison was to be trapped in time."

Her gaze then softened.

"Rest Daniel, you can save her, but only if you rest," she told him as the sunlight at long last bathed the room in its warm glow.

"Rest well, my love."

Daniel had yet to look at a mirror for quite some time, so he did not know what he truly looked like at the moment. However, furrowing his eyebrows a bit, a hand slowly rose as he counted carefully and in silence before finally looking back up to Belle. "I have been dead for thirty-four years." More of an out loud thought than anything else before slinking downwards to where his head hit the pillow finally. He did not mind the soft rising sunlight hitting him, from what he could remember; he was able to sleep practically at any time of the day. It was the horses that made him become awake at any time of the day or night.

Squinting his eyes a little bit, doing his best not to look directly towards the reflected sunlight, the warbling and chirping of the birds strangely gave him comfort before lulling him to near instant sleep.

Belle fixed the curtain to shade Daniel's face from the sun. He was exhausted, the shock of waking up in a strange place had overwhelmed his senses. The best thing he could do was rest and give his mind time to settle. She gently fixed the blanket so he was covered and warm. He looked so innocent, surely someone so kind could not love someone as cruel as Regina. The thought made her crack a bitter smile.

Look who's talking.

Days were easy to do in Storybrooke. During the daytime she had friends and a vast library to occupy her time. During the day, her troubles lifted like fog beneath the sunlight. Today would be a little different. She would forgo her library and take care of her new roommate. He would need clothes, men toiletries, and shoes. For the time being he could crash on her couch, but she would have to fix the spare bedroom for him.

With a renewed sense of purpose she went into town to gather what she could. The nuns [or was it the fairies now?] had set up a convenient little tent with blankets and emergency supplies. Using the blanket as an impromptu sack, she gathered clothes that looked to be Daniel's size along a few other essentials. Gathering up the corners of the sack, she returned to the loft.

Daniel was still out cold and conveniently allowed her time to put everything into place. Unfortunately, he would have to stay sleeping on the couch until she could afford a futon or something similar. Nevertheless, he had his own private space now, should he choose to use it.

It was well past 10 am when she realized how hungry she'd gotten. Moreover, with Daniel in the loft she hadn't thought about anything bad all morning. He was a soothing presence. She hummed to herself as she wandered into the kitchen and began cooking. Waffles were nice. Hers weren't nearly as tasty as Granny's but they would do nicely. Perhaps Daniel would wake and join her.

Soon the entire loft was filled with the sweet scent of waffles and vanilla.

...t'll all be over soon.

"DANIEL!"

A young boy, must have been no older than what the young princess was; in fact he had the same eyes as the princess herself. The look of fear and yet curiosity. Another man, with some kind of modern pistol; at the ready to use it on this--this monster of a man. But then, she was there. Begging and arguing with the man. The words were jumbled and warbled to the point of being inaudible, but they were talking.

She wanted him to stay, but there was so much anger and sorrow inside this new heart, he could not bear it. He needed to know she was okay and she was by the looks of it. Feeling the newly pulsated heart being pulled out of his body, he only saw the tears and the love in the eyes of the woman he once knew. But then there was darkness. The same darkness that had him before. As if the darkness was a curtain, it slowly unveiled the grassy knolls where the woman he remembered her as peered down to him with a soft giggle and soon laughter of joy. The scent of morning dew and vanilla filled his mind and soon nostrils.

The scent Daniel remembered was not coming from his dream of memory, but rather the whole loft. Opening his eyes carefully, he dared not move but gave a look around to remember where he was at. Belle's place. He can still recall things. He was not dead once again. Slowly moving up to stretch, he looked onward towards the kitchen; realizing the source location of the scent. Briefly looking out the closed window, there was a crack in the curtains for the sun to peep on through. It did not seem past noon-time, so he may not have gotten much sleep. Some was better than none, though.

Rubbing away what little of sleepiness that was near his eyes, he finally got up from the couch and waited a moment to make sure he was able to walk on his own. Hobbling like an old man, Daniel was able to successfully move on his own to the kitchen. Carefully peeking his head in, the man knitted his eyebrows in curiosity, coming to figure out that there has been over thirty-four years since his last meal.
"Do you not sleep?" Not knowing whether Belle grabbed a quick nap or was just busy the whole time, Daniel found it peculiar for a young woman not to be driven mad with the lack of sleep.

Belle heard Daniel before she saw him. He then poked his head through the door and asked the oddest question. She laughed softly as she placed the waffles on a plate.

"Yes, I do sleep," she said as she prepared the two plates, "just not right now."

Her tone was bright, and even playful. It was good to see him hobbling about. For a dead person, he was certainly lively and Belle for one, was glad to see it.

"Do you feel better, Daniel? I've made a late sort of breakfast if you'd like some," she placed the plates down on the small table in the kitchen nook. "Hope you like waffles."

Belle liked keeping busy. Busy was good, it kept her mind full of happy productive thoughts. More importantly it gave her someone to fuss over, even if she was being a little mothering.

"The only good thing I could do as a housewife is cook."

The smell of the waffles overpowered his senses, and that made Daniel's stomach create an audible growling noise. He would not be surprised if it echoed throughout the whole of the loft, let alone for Belle to hear it. "I think anything would do, but yes. Waffles, please?" Smiling and giving a nod, he hobbled himself over a chair at the table and took a couple of seconds while holding onto the back of the chair before moving it out carefully.

With that little time of sleep, he brain was able to have enough time to generate and connect everything together. Daniel hesitated to sit as it was rude to sit while a lady was up and about. However, he was a guest in this household. It was sitting that beat out polite courtesy, as his right arm was slowly starting to give out by holding onto his weight with the chair. Carefully sitting down in front of the table, Daniel remained silent as Belle finished up the cooking. He furrowed his eyebrows a bit, going into a thinking mode. Less than twelve hours from the looks of it and the young woman has done so many things and more to practically a stranger.

"Belle? I want to thank you for all that you have done so far for me." Anyone could take the boy out of the stables, but no one could take the stables out of the boy. Aside from Regina--and even then he still did--he did nothing but be humble and polite to anyone and everyone who crossed his path.

Belle couldn't help but chuckle as his stomach replied for him. This would be the first meal since his 'resurrection' and she wondered if this was like a first step back into normal. She placed the two plates on the table along with an assortment of syrups and jams. He was so polite and even had a shy sort of smile... when he smiled. It was easy to see how Regina could have loved him and yet, there was something else. There was something familiar about his eyes, as if she'd seen that glance a thousand times before. Moreover, she caught herself kept expecting his eyes to be a brass-gold tint instead of brown. Odd.

Just as the kettle began to sing, he voiced this gratitude. Belle was at a loss as to how to reply or justify her actions so she opted to stall for time and pour herself some tea and a bit of milk for Daniel. Once her thoughts had settled, she took a seat across from him.

"You're very welcome, Daniel," she replied in a soft, gentle tone, "but it's not as if I could have left you there on your own. We all need a little help, and I know what it's like to be confused and alone."

She prepared her tea as she spoke, never once making eye contact. Belle knew the circumstances were odd. Very few people would care what happened to a vagrant in the street. A few more would raise objections over a girl taking him home with her. With a small playful grin she tilted her head to one side and met his glance.

"...and the loft was getting a bit empty just having me around," she whispered as if it were some large conspiracy.

on't you fret, my dear...
...t'll all be over soon.

"'Kindness' is not a word in my mother's vocabulary."

Using the spoon--that was not wooden, rather peculiar--to mix the bit of milk within the tea; there was that aroma again. If she keeps this up, it will be hard to associate anything with jasmine and vanilla but to Belle. Creating what was apparently his first mental note--reminding himself to get a look around town to find an apothecary specializing in tea mixtures--Daniel took a small couple of sips in before placing it back down and finally focusing on the waffles directly in front. Having a strange desire to place a drop of syrup in each cranny of the waffles; his stomach rejected that thought as it grew impatient.

Picking up the eating utensils, Daniel looked at them carefully; as if seeing them for the first time ever. Looking at the knife, there was nothing sinister behind those eyes--unless you count the preparation of cutting into the waffles sinister.
"Fork." He then looked to the fork and bobbed it in his grasp once. "Knife." Ehhh....close enough. Smiling softly with his accomplishment of remembering such simple words and utensils, there was still a bit of trouble with him actually using them. Like a child learning on his own, he used the fork to hold down the waffles and the knife to do his best to cut a piece of it--small enough for him to eat it but big enough to fit his mouth.

Getting the right size, Daniel practically stuffed it in his mouth. After chewing what seemed like forever, he looked like he was in heaven. Having a silent shimmy with his shoulders, he finally swallowed before cutting another piece. Before he took the second bite, he looked back to Belle with a curious look upon his face.
"How are others holding up?" From what Daniel has seen, although granted it has been little amount--Belle is doing well off on her own since the breaking of this curse. "And what did this curse do exactically?" Alright, so there may be a few words unintentionally mispronounced, but the intent was there all in all. He then finally took in the second bite to keep his mouth busy while waiting patiently for Belle to savor her own breakfast and answers.

As she watched Daniel take a bite and react as if he were in heaven, she realized this was her first breakfast at home instead of Granny's. One of the reasons for that was because she couldn't bear to stay in her loft all alone. She craved human contact after so long in isolation. Still, as much as she loved Ruby and Granny, Belle was more than happy to share her first breakfast with Daniel. His words and mannerisms were tinted with a sweet innocence and Belle couldn't help but wonder if that was what Rumpel saw in her.

"It's an adjustment for everyone, but once your memories return and settle, it becomes easier," she replied between bites, "the curse was different for each person. Its purpose was to take away your happiness and lock you in a miserable existence. So if you were, say, a brave prince who loved a princess, you'd be turned into a coward and be married to a different woman."

She'd remembered listening to that particular story in the diner. If there was one place to catch up on gossip, that was the place.

"But now that the curse is broken, everyone can get their lives back. Things can go back to normal," she finished brightly, "I hope you don't mind me asking, but what do you like to do, Daniel?"

"I think that is your gift and your curse."

Devouring the waffles to the point of swallowing them whole, Daniel listened to Belle and the details of the curse. From the sounds of it—at least how his mind was processing it—the citizens’ memories are blending together with what they once were. ”So, it is up to each individual to have their memories prior to the curse and the memories during the curse to go hand-in-hand. And all of us are doing what we can to help each other out?” It wasn’t a question, per say, but more of making sure he had it all figured out. In a way, it made sense to him, but at the same time; being part of the reason of the curse, it didn’t.

When Belle asked him what Daniel liked to do, he immediately pointed to the now empty plate.
”What I just did.” The fork was lifted as he softly tapped it on his closed mouth and lost in thought for a moment or two. ”I would say the stables, but that may be not a wise decision to go back to for now. Animals in general I do like. As for what I like to do? I actually do not know anymore.” Was a swiss-cheese brain a side effect of being dead for so long? Possibly.
