"I'll meet you in the hall in a minute. Just give me a minute to change back into my clothes," she said.

Kromli replied, "Oh...I'll be at the bar then."

Fearing that she had somehow offended Kromli, Tinuviel asked, "Would you mind waiting? I promise I'll just be a minute," scooping up her clothes and tossing them on the bed.

"Oh, sure." Then he turned and left the room.

Tinuviel quickly pulled off the pyjamas and began to dress in her clothes of the day before, still taking the time to neatly fold the pyjamas and place them on the bed. She didn't bother to comb her hair, instead pulling it up on either side in two rather messy looking pigtails, as she darted out of the room as swiftly as possible.

Kromli led the way to his room, and immediately regretted leaving the package out in the open in the center of the bed. Knowing that it was too late to hide it and try to present it with any finesse, now, he decided he'd address it first thing.
"I um... Got this for you," he said, a little embarrassed. "I hope that you like it. Merry Ex-Mas."
He and Matasoga both used a pronounced way of secularizing the word and with that (at least in Matasoga's mind) gearing it towards principles and values far more humanist in nature than Christian.

Tinuviel followed Kromli down the familiar stairs to his basement room, not even noticing the present before it was handed to her. "Thank you," she said, receiving it with both hands. "Do you want me to open it now?

He replied, "I thought you'd open it now, but if you want to wait for Xmas, you can."

"Well, I'll open it now then. I don't think I'll see you again during the holidays. You're spending them with your mum and Matasoga, aren't you?"
PostPosted: Sun Dec 23, 2012 9:35 am

Kromli said, "Yeah, I'll stop in to see my mother for half of the day and the other half will be spent here. Did you know that Matasoga plans to open the bar to the public for free food, sort of like a soup kitchen, except with more than just soup available? I plan to help out with that."
As Tinuviel opened the package, she found a very worn-looking, dog-eared, leather-backed book with yellowing pages. Chipped and faded gilt lettering bore the title "Goblin for Beginners." Inside the cover was a note written that said, "If you don't really want to learn Goblin, it's okay, but you brought it up more than once, so I thought maybe this would be a good gift. If you were just being nice, that's okay, and you don't have to learn what really is a rather ugly language. Either way, please also enjoy the gift card for any other books you may like and don't have already."
"It's.... My copy. From when I was a kid. It's... Not in the best shape, and not that current either, but I hope you like it anyway," he said.

"No, I didn't know he was planning any charity. I'm surprised, honestly. But I'm glad to hear it," she responded as she opened his gift to her. As she carefully pulled open the wrapping paper, her eyes lit up as she discovered its contents. "You remembered!' she exclaimed. "I had given up on it, since you always tried to dissuade me when I brought it up." She bit her lip, reining in her exuberance before she could do anything stupid. "Thank you, Kromli. I love it."

Gently putting the worn book down, she dug around in her satchel and pulled out two packages. One was a sizable rectangular package, and the other was a small bag tied with ribbon. "These are for you," she said, handing the packages to him. "I hope you like them..."

Kromli's eyes (and the rest of his face) lit up. He knew that she wasn't one for politeness at the expense of truth, so her words brought him great assurance.
"You, bought a present for me?" Kromli asked, even as he accepted them. "I'm so touched. Usually only Matasoga and my mom get me presents...
"Thank you," he said, visibly flustered. He opened the small package first.

Inside the bag was a small pie. As he pulled it out, Tinuviel explained, "I couldn't get horse here, but the herbs and such used are supposed to be really similar to that goblin dish you like. Sorry if it's not quite how you like it."

The rectangular package contained two items: a slim volume of Elven poetry ("Since you tried your hand at writing your own") and a 15 disc DVD set on the history of film ("Since you spend so much time watching them").

"Thank you so much!" he said, absolutely overcome. He threw his arms around her for just a moment before collecting himself. He remembered that she wasn't so free with her affections as most of the guildwomen were and had hugged him once but then stopped. Though he thought on it quite little when it happened, it suddenly seemed rather important.
He nearly leaped back, saying, "Oh, um... Was it okay to hug you? Was that alright?"

"I'm really glad you like them," she started to say before the words stuck in her throat, as he put his arms around her. He retracted them almost as quickly as he had thrust them out, and she stood there confused, her cheeks nearly as red as her hair. It took her a moment to realize he had asked her something, but once it had registered, she mumbled, "I...I'm not sure. It's kind of ...strange, isn't it?" She wasn't really sure how to explain without completely embarrassing herself and hoped her reply was adequate.

"Oh," Kromli said in an understanding voice that was less expressive than before. He knew what it was about, or at least was certain that he did. It didn't matter how close they were. He was still half-goblin and she was still quarter celestial and half-elf. There were lines that goblins were not to cross when dealing with humans, much less something so much... more. He had forgotten his place.
There was no feeling sorry for himself. There wasn't even any pain. It was something quite deeply ingrained. He had a place and he had forgotten it. He was just a little mad at himself for being so carelesss and forgetting these very important facts.
"Sorry. I don't know what came over me. I shouldn't have done that. It won't happen again," he said very quickly, turning away in shame.

Kromli's reaction was not at all what Tinuviel had expected. She had no idea that a simple question could hurt him like that; it certainly hadn't been what she intended. She took his hand without thinking, saying, "Strange doesn't have to be bad, does it? I'll try to explain better, but you can't laugh at me, okay?" She was glad then that he had turned away, so he wouldn't be staring at her as she tried to make her way through this. "When you hugged me, it was weird and awkward because you're my best friend..." She paused, before hurrying through the last bit, her voice almost a whisper. "But...it also made me feel light-headed and warm all over and like I was in the safest place in the world..." She quickly dropped his hand and turned away, wishing she could disappear into the walls.

Wait... What? He was sure that he had heard her right There was really no mistaking her words, so close, quietly as they were offered. He would understand exactly what was happening if those words were said to Matasoga but... He wasn't Matasoga. Nothing of the sort! He was Kromli and such things just didn't happen to Kromli. This simply did not compute at all. What on Earth was happening?!
"Um-da... Uh..." He was simply dumbfounded. He filled the air with incoherence and unintelligibility for no less than five seconds (after two or three of silence) and finally pulled himself together, took a deep breath, and decided to figure out exactly where the misunderstanding was coming from.
"So you... liked when I hugged you?" he put forth, as meekly as if he was asking if the Earth wasn't really round, after all.

The silence was painful. Not only had she just embarrassed herself utterly and completely by speaking her mind, but she was sure she had just lost her only friend because of it. When he finally asked his question, which made her think he hadn't heard or understood any of what she had just said, she wished she had never said anything. The idea of anything more between them obviously flabbergasted him. He probably had someone among Matasoga's harem to whom he gave his affections. Why would she think that he would feel anything for her, so boring, so serious?
"Perhaps too much," she replied, hoping the ordeal would soon be over so she could return to her apartment and never leave again.

He was... At a loss. Maybe this was why Matasoga advised him to always plan for every eventuality, but this he had never considered.
When all else failed, and the issue was not him having stolen something, the best thing to do was usually to be honest, because he couldn't lie the way that Matasoga did. And so he told the truth.
"I... Don't really know what to say. No one has ever said anything like that to me before and... I kind of thought that the most anyone would ever do is tolerate my hugs and wait for them to end, if I was ever fool enough to give one," he said, before giving a significant pause.
"If it makes any difference," he said, staring at his shoes, "I liked it too."

She waited for him to tell her she was foolish, that she had ruined a perfectly good friendship, that she should go home...But those words never came. So when he said that he had liked it, when it was implied that he felt even an inkling of what she did, her hope swelled. Afraid to tip the precarious balance, she did not turn to face him -- she daren't do so, not yet -- but asked somewhat excitedly, "Did it make you giddy? Are there sparks when we touch?"
