Another series that I love is the Redwall series, by Brian Jacques. Sadly, there are no more being added, as he passed away a few years ago. But every one of his books is amazing, once you get past the anthropomorphized animals.

And then there's Anne McCaffrey. I read her Pern series a lot when I was younger. It's science fiction, but it doesn't read like it, because the whole thing's so far in the future that people have traveled to other worlds, and then lost the technology.
