Raven Ace Rapture
But I can't title something until I start writing it

Of course. That goes without saying. There are some times when I still can't think of a good title until I've already got a few chapters posted.

I've been planning a Labyrinth fanfiction, but I don't even have a working title for it yet sweatdrop

I usually like titles that can convey the overall feeling of the story, whether it's sarcastically humorous or just plain angst.

Titling a new story for a new fandom is always the hardest for me. You want it to be exciting and eye-catching. Something interesting that will draw a reader's attention as they scroll down the page. But at the same time, you don't want to be to melodramatic or cliche.

As a reader, I am turned off by common or repetitive titles. Like multiple stories by multiple authors might have the same title within the same fandom. That annoys me. If I see a story with the same title as five others in the same archive I'll just scroll on by it. For example, within the Frozen fandom, there is a large number of people who like to ship Elsa with someone who have fire powers. That's actually a ship I support. However, there are like five stories with that same premise that are titled "Singed". I get it. Its a nice shot title that references the OC's abilities. Out of context I'd think its a pretty good title. But within the Frozen fandom where there are four others by the same title, I find it to be a big turn off and I will not read it.

So, when titling your stories, I suggest browsing the forums for a bit to make sure your title isn't already an overly used one.

Also, overly melodramatic, cliche or long tiles turn me off as well. Things like "I am One with the Wind and Sky". Overly melodramatic, cliche, and long, all in one. A huge turn off for me. If you wanna go with something like that, try cutting it in half. Make the title "I am One With" or just "Wind & Sky". Make it shorter, take out a few subjects and you'll not only make it shorter, but also less melodramatic and less cliche.

I tend to go with the old rule of "keep it simple, stupid" when it comes to titles. I prefer to use a word or a few words to give an idea of what the story is about.

A common thing I've been noticing recently is including the fandom name in the title. Such was "Ben 10: Guardians", or "Jurassic Park: Fast Pass".

Chances are, your readers KNOW the fic they're reading is a Ben 10, or Jurassic Park fic. They clicked on that archive after all. There is no need to insert it into the title of the fic. Doing so is redundant, and makes your title look cluttered and wordy.
