I can get the "I don't want my kid to go through the hard times I did/make the same mistakes I did." That makes sense. Of course we want the best for our kids, but some people take it to an extreme. I totally understand what your saying; our kids are NOT our second chance at whatever. Be it wealth, beauty, popularity, sexuality, employability--whatever! We shouldn't treat them the way we wanted to be treated when we were disturbed and rebellious teens.

Definitely. Like all the nonsense with Toddlers in Tiaras and little girls getting botox and spray tans.
And my mom had a problem with that. She always wanted me to be a perfect girly girl. Then when I wasn't, she had this illusion that girls were supposed to fight with their parents. So she would make up all these scenarios and tell her friends how we fought all the time and stuff like that.

That's why I can't stand those "Little Miss" pageants where 7 year olds are trussed up like 21 year olds. Anthropologically speaking, a culture's obsession over aesthetics is usually one of the first signs of the decline of that culture.

My mom and I...have an odd relationship. She was the sort of up-tight personality that never told me any of her past mistakes, so I grew up with the impression that she was 99% perfect and expected me to be the same way. Which was pretty much impossible because we were so opposite in almost every way, it was insane. If she hadn't birthed me at home, I'd suspect a switch in the hospital nursery. She was a spring/summer and I was an autumn/winter. She was an apple, I was a T. She wanted me to wear baggy clothes because she thought it was more appropriate to conceal my figure, but most of the clothes in my size category were cut for a close fit, and size large on my size medium figure were prone to "wardrobe malfunctions." Which she blamed me for. razz Go figure. By the time I left home, we'd gotten through some of it--we had a half-joke between us about our tastes in fashion: If I liked something, she'd hate it, and if she liked it, I'd hate it.

I got my ears pierced when I was 8 years old. And it was something I had to BEG for. I finally convinced my Dad, who totally indulged me since I was his only daughter, but my mom was against it and did everything she passive-aggressively could to discourage me. We're talking lots of cleaning of the piercing points with 99.9% alcohol. Ow.

Oh wow. That would be crazy. My mom was always really harsh about my figure. I'm a chubbier girl, so she would always make comments about how if I ate anymore I would die, and things like that. It was pretty crappy.

I had my ears pierced at 7, because my mom convinced me that I wanted to have it done. She cleaned them, but when I went to my dad's house over the weekends, they wouldn't clean them, and I wasn't taught how to do it myself, so I would get horrible infections. I was way too young for that kind of responsibility.

My mom is my greatest example of what NOT to do with my daughter. rofl

My mom has her cool moments. We did bond over crafty stuff, like quilts and jewelery making. But sometimes--no, most of the time--I didn't know what she expected of me, and she would play these passive-aggressive mind games to get me to do what she wanted. Probably because I could get my dad to do what I wanted, and she'd never openly oppose him. Ah, family drama. So glad I'm out from under that.

Oh yeah. I've been so much happier since I've moved out of my mom's house.
I'm glad you got away from it as well. 3nodding
