I can only imagine that the Broadway version is about a thousand times better than the movie. But I know little to nothing of the Broadway version, so I have to go with the movie.

I just love the Broadway version.
I dunno...Don't get me wrong I LOOOVE the movie, but dialouge in the movie sounds like spoken music, and it bothered me a lot.
Like the voicemails that they turned into dialouge...
-shrug- But, I was into the Broadway version since the age of 12...so it destroyed me =)

I prefer the OBCR to the movie. I love the movie, but there are little things in it that bug me. And Rosario sounds too girly for me.

I first saw it live off-Broadway, and that's the best way to see it. Live, that is. It's just so raw and emotional. And you get to moo. whee

The first taste of Rent I had was the movie. And I haven't actually seen it live, I only own the soundtrack to OBC. So I have to say movie, just because.

Though after I listened to the OBC and then I wanted the movie, I didn't like it as much just because it's so different when they don't sing certain parts, but they bring bits of the songs into their dialogue.

I'm gonna have to go with OBC. There are certain things about the movie I like better than the OBC (Such as Tracie over Fredi) but over all the OBC is better...

I want to see it on Broadway so much...but my parents just don't seem to care about making that happen, and I could NEVER save enough money by myself. Plane tickets, hotel, Rent tickets...I'd have to pay for my whole family. I'm 13, so I can't go by myself, or with my friends. Though my parents did say something about going to New York on vacation next year...I really hope they weren't kidding. They were probably just teasing me though.

I really hope Rent doesn't go off Broadway before I get a chance to see it.

As entertaining and enjoyable as they both are, the Broadway show of RENT is by far the superior. (To quote lots of people) Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie. That is, I thought the movie was fun, and emotional, and beautiful. I loved the fact that they made this so that those who are unable to see the show can still enjoy the brilliance that is RENT. And I loved the cast. However, I did not think the film was a good adaptation. I respect Columbus' efforts (and some parts I loved; Tango Maureen, etc.) but the dialogue stuck in to make it less of an opera seemed awkward, some of the scenes and cut songs annoyed me, and the fact that he REMOVED THE CLIMAX OF THE STORY, I found a bit pathetic. But yeah, I loved the movie.

As for the stage musical...I could go on for ever. It has every good thing the movie had, and soooo much more. A great movie adaptation, in my opinion, is one that take the material it is working with, and uses the advantages of film, with it's subleties, dialogue, special effects, or whatever, to add to the story. I just didn't think the film of RENT did this in most places.

No contest, the play is better.

Though, I'm a sucker for live theatre....it's always much realer and more raw for me that way. Plus, you get Christmas Bells, You Okay Honey?, We're Okay, Halloween, Contact, and the rest of Goodbye Love.

La Vie Boheme is so much better live.

It can depend on the cast....the last cast I saw was great. They weren't the OBC, obviously, but it's more about the characters...their emotions and issues and it's their story.

You'll love the play.

I'd rather they'd made a really nice video of the play with no audience present so you could hear the whole thing than turned it into a movie at all. The emotions of the story are built for the stage and work better there. I went to see rent last september and i might be seeing it again this week! The cast i saw was amazing (it was the tour).
I'm also a sucker for live performances because there's more energy but the youtube videos i've seen of rent are pretty good as well.

Broadway, hands down.

The Broadway version has all of Larson's touch to it, while the Movie version had parts cut out and altered. Not much different, but close enough to make it matter. The Movie I mostly appreciate for its subtle visual changes like having some of the members of Life Support slowly dissolve (a trick very difficult to do on stage).

BROADWAY is sooooo much better. There are more songs and real stuff. The actors arn't in ansound studio singing the same songs over and over again! It is alittle expansive and me and my friend are sneeking out to see it again this summer. my parents were extras in the Broadways show. So I got to see it all the time. Then we moved and I don't get to see it as often.

I have a really hard time on this one. I mean, the movie gives those of us who were unable to see the OBC the closest chance we possibly could. On the other hand, the staged version has more of what Johnathan Larson wanted us to see and understand. The movie took a lot of that away. So I have to say that I prefer the staged version.

I've seen both of them. They are both really good. They have good actors and great music. You still get the energy in the movie as you would when you see the play or vice-versa.

i have seen the broadway and the movie. and there is more music in the broadway and its really interactive with the crowd. but i have to say that as in listening and quality of the songs the music from the movie is better but as in for more fun adn interactive i'd say that the broadway is much better. but for me i enjoyed the movie more only because i saw it first so i compared the broadway to the movie instead of the otherway around. but i do have to say that the song "christmas bells" is the best song ever from the RENT score. xd
