A lot of people say Neville is afraid of Snape because he's a death eater. But until book 6, he had no way of knowing that he was.
The real question is, why is Snape soooo terrible to Neville. I have an answer, but it involves a bunch of ifs.
If it is true that Snape had a thing for Lilly Potter, then he probably regretted that he told the dark lord. He felt terrible that Voldemort chose Harry instead of Neville, because Snape would rather have Neville's parents dead so that he could eventually have Lily.
If that is true, then whenever Snape sees Neville, he sees something that could have kept Lily alive by dying.
Now, why did Voldemort give Lily the chance to live??? Did he suspect that his number one man would stay loyal if he did?

xxqueenofrockxx I'm with you guys.. I can't really understand how people think that Snape is so wonderful. They think that he is just misunderstood.. wtf? It's the same with the rest of the slytherins. I guess people just don't want to like the people they are supposed to and hate them instead. Who knows.... Anywho.. I think Snape always putting Neville down and not letting him succeed in anything in his eyes reminds him of his Gran. Perhaps Neville is afraid of not pleasing people, of not being good enough.
Yeah that seems.. Plausible. Doesn't everyone suffer with that problem? Or is it just me? sweatdrop

Did he suspect that his number one man would stay loyal if he did? He was probably just toying with her. He would make her give over her baby, kill him, then turn around and kill her. It makes sense

I don't think it's that complicated. He just wanted to see if she would trade her baby's life for hers. He probably didn't intend to kill her but did it anyway to get to Harry Potter.
