Loona Wynd DragonicFlames Ok... literally... there is a spell in here for a chastity belt... the IRONY of a "Wiccan" book with having a CHASTITY BELT spell is not lost on me... Wait what? Yes... a spell.. for chastity....belts. Yes. Quote: The first book I wanted to use wont really work as every spell involved citing the names of angels or "goddess of X". Which was a bit of a disappointment as I thought that just maybe there would be something I could use in that book. Yeah a lot of the funnier spells I could have done really invoked various deities over a wide berth of pantheons. D:

DragonicFlames Loona Wynd That doesn't make sense. I mean most other books I've read on the subject include the information or at least the recipe for the oils in the spells so you can get them if you don't have them. Yeah I know. It just shows what kind of author this is. Not one that I'd use it seems.

Author: Raymond Buckland Title of Source: Practical Candleburning Rituals Spell Name: To Overcome A Bad Habit (p23)
Candles Required: 1 black 4 white (diagram included in book)
The white candles are arranged in a square around the black candle, a white one at each cardinal point so the white candles form a diamond around the black candle. North is candle one, west is candle 2, south is candle 3 and west is candle 4
The blurb in the book:
Light Altar candles
Light Incense (preferably frankincense) and sit for a moment thinking of the bad habit being overcome by good.
Light the black candle and say: "Here is that which holds me back. It is not good for me and well do I know it. It seems a mighty giant that is not to be conquered. Yet do I know that not to be so, for conquer it I will."
Light the white candles 1,2,3,4 and say "Here is my strength; here is my courage; here is my fortitude; here is my victory. Now is mine enemy surrounded. now knows he not which wat to turn. The battle doth begin, yet is the end well known."
Picture in your mind the forced of good advancing and marching on the enemy - The bad habit. After a few moments of this say, quietly.
"Star of the twilight grey, Where wast thou blinking? When in the olden day, Eve dim was sinking? O'er knight and baron's hall, Turret and tower O'er fell and forest tall Green brake and bower.
Star of the silver eve, What hast thou noted, Whilst o'er the tower and tree High hast thou floated? Blue blades and bonnet gear, Plaid lightly dancing Lairs of the dun deer And shafts dimly glancing
Star of the maiden's dream, Star of the gloaming, Where now doth blink thy beam, When owls are roaming? Where in the baron's hall Green moss is creeping, Where o'er the forest's fall Grey dew is weeping
Star of the even still, What now doth meet thee, When from the lonely hill Looks thy blink sweetly? Hearths in the wind bleached bare, Roofs in earth smouldered, Sheep o the dun deer's lair, Trees felled and mouldered."
After a few moments of more picturing the bad habit finally overcome, extinguish the candles; black first then white 4, 3, 2, 1.
At the same time seven days later, repeat the ritual but move white candles 2 and 3 an inch towards the black candle. Repeat weekly until the two white touch the black.
((I picked this spell because I dislike the complexity of Raymond Buckland's candle rituals I like nice simple ones and I'm going to have a field day turning this spell into a format I would use. I also hate rituals with a lot of spoken words))

Which uses a condom as one of the components.

It doesnt seem like the long passage of talking has much to do with the point behind the spell. It just seems like telling a story to me. The statement that goes with the lighting of the candles I understand, though I dont like the language.

The statement that goes with the lighting of the candles I understand, though I dont like the language. Aye, A lot of his rituals are like that, the Christian versions have psalms instead, yes in his book you have the 'old religion' and Christian versions side by side. Go figure. The language is also a little antiquated for my liking as well. It sounds poetic, yes, but I'd stumble over something like that trying to say it in ritual.

I can see where in a full worship ritual where language like that might be beneficial (look at most of the invocations written out there). However for me and my spells the chants are typically straight forward and simple. I've always thought that the words in spells should be simple so that you don't have to read from a paper but can have them be memorized. As for the Christian and the non christian versions side by side I can sort of understand that. That way if person is interested in magic and witchcraft but is still a hard core Christian they have rites right there for them.

I don't think chants should be read from a paper or a script. Every time I've heard it and performed it it's always foreign and sounds unnatural and doesn't provide the right mood. However, just because it's long doesn't give anyone (IMHO) reason to not attempt to memorize it. I've seen people do full winter rituals all from memory and scripting - granted from video {i spend a lot of time watching how people perform their rituals because I get more out of it then reading about it to be honest} and not in person. But all my in person experiences with that type of thing is just bad bad bad with the reading off the paper.

In regards to length:
I agree that length should not prevent some one from memorizing the rituals. As I understand them Wiccan rituals must be performed from memory, and there are a lot of in depth things that go into those rituals.
The trick in cases such as the poem Buckland includes in his spell is to take it section by section one at a time and piece it together like that. That way it's repetition and memorization at once.
On to my spell:
I'm still debating on if it's the color, the day, the number, of the repetitions of the spell that's important. I think that colors and repetition are important. However after reading the associations with candles this author poses I see why she chose which days.
There are planetary hours and powers associated with the days and colors. To her every part of the spell is representative of her need. This is honestly how I originally thought about spells and magic. So for me this does allow me to explore things I naturally consider in my spells.
