Since everybody has a profile posted now, you guys can start on your character sheets. We'll be starting at ECL 4, with standard character wealth (5,400 gp). See the Language sections in both the Rules and the World Setting posts to determine your automatic languages (you're still free to have a number of languages known equal to your automatic languages plus Intelligence modifier, as usual). Note that Common will not be automatic, though.
If you have your own dice, you can just roll them on your own to determine ability scores. If not, make a post and the necessary die rolls in the Misc. thread. Note that if you make the rolls in the thread, each consecutive four rolls will group together for one ability score. As usual, reroll the lowest result, and take the highest three to determine each attribute.
Include extra rolls for Appearance as a seventh ability score, and make a note of it somewhere on either your character sheet, or your character profile. You're all still free to determine for yourselves exactly how your character looks, and whether they should be attractive, ugly, or average-looking, and the other players can still determine for themselves how their character may react to one another's appearance based on descriptions given. The Appearance score will just serve as a baseline for the DM to rule how NPCs react to your characters, based solely on physical appearance. (Humans have no racial modifier to this ability score, chromatic half-dragons recieve a -2 penalty, and half-elves have a +2 bonus. Nobody is old or young enough to have age-based modifiers.)

It's not a requirement for your characters, but I strongly suggest looking into the race and class options presented by the Pathfinder setting's Core Rulebook (if you don't have access to a copy, you can download a pdf file from one of these torrents). As I said, it isn't necessary, and you can always go by the standard rules as per the Player's Handbook. But the new options are quite nice.

Matasoga
Josh, I still need you to finish your profile.

Lady-Sanctuary
And Esme, I'd still like for you to add more detail to yours.

I filled in "Goals," I don't know what you want us to do about "Languages," and before I can do a character sheet, I need to know if you're still under the misconception that a level adjustment of 3 or more gives you feats, as though they were levels. I need to know some other details, as well.

Matasoga
I filled in "Goals,"

Alright, thanks. Just finish up Matasoga's contacts and fill in any noteable enemies he may have made (if there are any), and your profile will be all set.

Quote:
I don't know what you want us to do about "Languages,"

The first thing to do would be to place Harne somewhere in this world, using the map and its explanation in my World Setting post. I'm not entirely sure what the climate there is supposed to be like, but I would think it'd probably be either in Midgarde, or somewhere near the Mountains of Dust; though I'll let you decide. It was a human settlement though, right? If that's the case, Matasoga's automatic language would most likely be either Midgarte or Talshurran.
Next, if his mother or grandparents' primary language would be different, he can have that as well. Havilah and Rotem were from the desert region near the blue dragon's lair, right? If that's the case, their primary language --thus, Matasoga's as well, in all likelihood-- should be Talshurran.
After that, he can have a number of languages to start with equal to his Intelligence modifier. Either anything his mother or grandparents would've taught him, or he would've pursued himself. Any more than that will cost 2 skill points per language, as usual for learning new ones.

Quote:

No. That was Zac's ruling, and I can't locate whatever it was that he'd found to give him the impression that was the way things are done.

Quote:
I need to know some other details, as well.

Ask away.
I've added in a section I'd forgotten to my previous post. The addition has been included in red to easily separate it from the rest of the post. I imagine that probably answers one of your questions.

Well, I'm thinking that aside from Kromli, there would be just a few women from his hometown, and a handful of somewhat shady or at least questionable people in the big city in which he currently resides. Should I include it as vaguely as this? Really they would just be NPCs for your use, aside from Kromli and as I imagine they won't play a role at all, so wasting names on them seems silly, unless one of them inspires you.
There would also be followers. The most strongly associated feat that I have with Matasoga is "Leadership." It seems a little silly that all of these people would suddenly show up, all at once. It seems that there should be at least a few now, be they groveling sycophants, lovestruck ladies, quiet admirers, etc. I would like at least Sergius to act as a Butler or manservant, if he has any permanent lodging, though of course he would never be involved in combat. If you want him out from this point, however, I can understand, but I would like your thoughts here.

As long as it's rural and remote, you can place it anywhere you feel is appropriate. By the way, if it's too far removed from your campaign setting and you want something a little more Norse, we can change the name. I was really never married to that one, anyway.
Can you tell me more about the languages, or is all such available information already in the set-up?

I have more to respond to and say, but I think I'll leave it at that, for right now, as I keep getting side-tracked.

(I'm trying more of a 'story about the characters' approach to this game, since cramming the characters into the last story didn't work so well.)

Being that we're starting at level 4 (effectively level 1 for you), I thought it would be a good opportunity for you to play Matasoga as if he'd only very recently struck out on his own. So you could build up his company and reputation from the ground up, in-game.
I would be silly to have them all show up at once, upon taking that feat. I have no problems with them beginning to trickle in beforehand, they just won't be of much use yet.
At the level we'll be starting out at, the only way I can see Matasoga having permanent lodging would be if he bought a house, or other building within his means. I think I'd have to stipulate that such a purchase come out of your wealth though. I'm fine with you having Sergius, provided there's a reason he's come by his role (whether he's paid for it, or there's something in Matasoga's backstory to explain his service).

Alright. I think I'll stick it in eastern Midgarde, then. Give you a bit more reason to be in the area we're starting in. wink So your automatic languages (assuming I am right about Matasoga's mother and grandfather coming from the area near the dragon's desert) would be Midgarte and Talshurran.
The name is fine. None of the cities I've placed there have followed a Norse theme, that's more the northern barbarians' thing. The name Midgarde just came from calling the realm 'the middle kingdom' as a placeholder, and being too lazy to think of anything else.

Quote:
Can you tell me more about the languages, or is all such available information already in the set-up?

Well, there's a list of commonly used languages by region in the world setting, but that's really all that's posted so far.
Each species of creature capable of speaking a language has one of its own; even different subraces of the same creature type have their own distinct language (for example, wood elven [Sy'Tel'Quess] would differ from high elven [Ar'Tel'Quess], hobgoblin differs from goblin, and so on). Each language has its roots in whichever that creature is listed as knowing in its entry in the Monster Manual (or whatever other source it shows up in), and while the root isn't commonly used, it can be used to communicate with speakers of its derivatives, just not quite as accurately as if both were using the same tongue.
Humans have different languages for different regions and kingdoms. Thus Midgarde and the desert kingdom each have one of their own. And the same division extends to tribal areas (such as the northern barbarians, or the plains nomads), though the northmen, at least, have a common language between their tribes (Naram).
And Common will be used primarily by merchants, travelers, and those who often associate with travelers. Not many people beyond them really have a need to know it. Or the intelligence necessary to pick up a language beyond their primary.

Or were you asking what sort of feel they had?

Quote:
in the big city in which he currently resides.

I should probably note that we'll be starting out in a relatively small, out-of-the-way village. Not too far from the Midgarde-plains border, but a ways west of Dunlus. I imagine Matasoga would only be out in such a place pursuing mercenary work. Most of such work around that area is in cutting back monster (especially goblin or gnoll) or nomad incursions (though taking on the nomads would require a larger force than Matasoga would have), or further east, investigating the growing rate of planetouched births. But I'll leave you to decide exactly what brought him there, provided it's not too far beyond his ability to deal with (i.e. no vampires, yet).

No. That was Zac's ruling, and I can't locate whatever it was that he'd found to give him the impression that was the way things are done.

That's probably because there is no such thing. How he can read much of what he does and reach the conclusions that he does, so often is nothing short of amazing.
I thought that you were enforcing it, which is why I still have a very incorrect version of Matasoga's character sheet, filed away, somewhere. Then again it's neither here nor there.
mourn_of_blades
I'd like to see some of them, at least, included with some level of detail. That way it'll actually mean something to you if one of them should happen to pop up. Which they very well might. (I'm trying more of a 'story about the characters' approach to this game, since cramming the characters into the last story didn't work so well.)

None of the women really did mean anything to Matasoga. As for the contacts, I only decided to include them as a likely thing, now. I welcome and encourage you to develop them, if there comes a need for any of them to be included, but until them I see them as rather… Unnecessary.
As a brief note, some of them may be involved in illegal things, but not things like drug-pushing or things like that, which Matasoga would consider low-class. It would be things such as poison selling, and the like, that could at least be used by him for the betterment of society.
You know…Most thinking folk realize that utopia isn’t utopia because there is no murder. Sometimes murder is the only thing that keeps utopia utopian.
mourn_of_blades

Oh, those who do show would of course be level one… And would probably have no more skills or ability than commoners of the same level. All of that is fine. It’s more the idea of him having a following rather than the rare and low utility of such.
I can consent to paying the 3000. It’s a heavy blow to the wealth that he would have, but what must be will be. It is how the character would spend his money, after all. It wouldn’t be a stronghold or anything so extravagant, but the 3K one vaguely mentioned in the DMG should suffice, at least for now.
Maybe Sergius was sent by the blue dragon that fathered him, to look after him after he came of age. It is truly in Sergius’ nature to serve, so even if the charm/domination spells that compelled him were resisted/wore off, Sergius would still do so, for no pay aside from that which being in his Master’s company could provide (as in food, lodging, and, when applicable, luxury).

Matasoga would certainly learn Common, as he would often stop and talk to merchants about the bigger cities. So that, Dragonic, and Goblin might just do it for him. We'll see what his intelligence score winds up being.
I hadn’t actually read that list, yet, but this should cover all of my language-based questions.

When I say "Vampire" I include weak and newly risen vampire spawn in that term. So far Matasoga has slain plenty of spawn but no vampires, yet, and even then he usually has either the direct of secondary aid of members of the clergy.
Those incursions don't really interest Matasoga and he would not be there for reasons such as those. He would have needed to have heard a rumor from some credible source that there was top billing being paid for anyone who would slay a vampire spawn, for him to go out to a place like that. And it certainly isn't where his house would be. If such a rumor were untrue and only perpetuated by a powerful force to draw him there, it could have interesting plot implications, but if that doesn't inspire you, it doesn't need to have a source within the story.

First-level, NPC class (excluding aristocrat), members of the common races. They can upgrade to PC classes when you take Leadership. And a maximum of four for now.

Okay. You can always upgrade as we go along, too.

Alright guys, half of us have been done for a while and waiting on the rest of you, so I'm thinking I may just go ahead and start us off pretty soon. If I do, those of you who have finished your character's profile and character sheet may begin immediately. If you have anything left to do, you'll have to finish that first before I'll allow you to post.

Additionally, Josh, if you'd rather not take the 3,000 gp out of Matasoga's wealth for a house, I could allow you to rent one for a negligible or small price, depending on the size of the place. Though if you take that route, I'll probably stipulate that the owner demands advance rent for as long as you expect to be on the road.

Also, for both Josh and Sarah, if either of you decide to use the Pathfinder version of the sorcerer class, I'll allow you access to a Familiar at first level (as the class feature of the basic sorcerer), since several racial and class abilities overlap.

Here's what I still need from each of you before you'll be able to start:

Matasoga
  • Friends/Contacts/Allies: This includes Kromli, Sergius, living family members, any relevant figures from his backstory that he might meet again in-game and interact with in a meaningful way. If they're not included, there is no chance of them making an appearance. Similarly, if any contacts (such as the poison-dealer you'd mentioned before) aren't noted, your character will have to begin relations with another such figure from square one, in-game.
  • Enemies: I'm pretty sure Matasoga counts all vampires, their spawn, and those who willingly associate with them as foes. Specific survivors from his backstory would be nice, as well as anyone else not associated with such creatures, if there are any.
  • Character Sheet: The link to the site is on the first page, in the profile template.

And Josh, since everything currently listed in your profile was put there for you, I'd like you to look through it and make sure everything is accurate.

Lady-Sanctuary
Same as Matasoga, as well as Background. As I said before, if you don't want the others to know about any of it, you can PM the info to me. Just so long as I have it.

I'd rather have a place of substantial size be owned by him, rather than someone else that he answers to. I have no problem cutting out the 3K. A reminder now would be perfect except my in-laws will be here in less than an hour and I won't get back until tomorrow, and then I work. An hour would be enough time, but I have several other things that I really need to do, between now and then, so I'll try and get it worked up tomorrow. I am finished enough that I really feel that I could start with you guys. There are no important details missing, after all.

I'd rather have a place of substantial size be owned by him, rather than someone else that he answers to.

Home ownership it is then. By the way, I looked up the prices for buildings in the DMG, and there isn't one listed at 3,000 gp. There's a simple house running for 1k, or a grand house for 5k. You can pick whichever one you'd like, but you will have to pay for it. The descriptions for each are on page 101.

Heh, I bet you don't. I'll cut the price (or at least most of it) if it's rented, but not if it's purchased.

Maybe so, but I want it totally finished first. It's been difficult enough getting you to work on it in the over two months since Sarah posted it for you, so we could get started. We both know there's little that's going to get you to do it if I go ahead and let you start playing before you finish it.
You can play when it's finished and posted. That includes the character sheet. Same goes for Esme.

Usually I'd reply with item-by-item quotes, but I'm not sure just how long I can conveniently be on right now, so I will take the path of brevity.
Is this the 3.5 DMG? I saw no such thing there, but I could be mistaking the price for the simple house (and only one that I saw listed). In that case, I'll take the hit to my equipment and purchase the Grand House.
Ah, yes. Still another incarnation of Matasoga to custodialize in my records. I'll work him up on paper and then get it scanned or transcribed, somehow.
In fact, if the game were started, I'd be much quicker to get such things posted. With as active as you and Sarah are, I would be guaranteed an almost daily reminder. If you want it before we begin anything, however, that is your prerogative and I may be home and working on it before I have to leave for work.
A for Esme, it appears that she is on again. At least I saw her post, elsewhere, recently. Have you tried PMing her? It is hard to run a game of only three.

Matasoga
Is this the 3.5 DMG? I saw no such thing there, but I could be mistaking the price for the simple house (and only one that I saw listed).

Indeed. I even gave the page number, so you can see for yourself. I don't use anything from 4E, and the only things I take from 2E relate to the planes. I'm sure it goes without saying, but I don't use 1E rules either.
I could probably use the rules as given in the Stronghold Builder's Guide, but I'm pretty sure that would raise the price far above what I've already mentioned. I built a shop for an NPC in another character's backstory, and it ended up costing quite a bit.
Actually... now that I'm looking at my notes on that subject, it could run a bit less than what the DMG offers... You'd have to work it out for yourself, if you decide to look into it, due to the customizable options (it allows you to tailor number of rooms, building material, interior and furnishings, and includes varying levels of quality). It might be worth looking into, if you have the book.
I would direct you to a link for a digital copy, but the site I used now requires membership to download anything... stare You could probably still find a copy in a torrent though.

Quote:

Ouch... that's going to be quite the significant dent to your equipment. But if that's how Matasoga would spend his gold, have at.
How many rooms was he looking for, by the way?

Quote:

Well, the link on the previous page is for a 3rd edition character sheet. Not a lot really needs transcribing, you just plug in the info just as you would on a paper character sheet. And it doesn't require any software like what Zac used for his games. It's all online; all you need to do is create an account (which, if I recall correctly, only requires a username and password, possibly an email account), and you're in. No fees, no membership or subscription prompts, annoying emails, or anything of the like. It's just a database for character sheets.

In fact, if the game were started, I'd be much quicker to get such things posted. With as active as you and Sarah are, I would be guaranteed an almost daily reminder. If you want it before we begin anything, however, that is your prerogative and I may be home and working on it before I have to leave for work.

Just the same, I'd really like to have all the information I've asked for beforehand. It gives me more time to think on it and work it into the game, better than I'd be able otherwise.

As for Esme, it appears that she is on again. At least I saw her post, elsewhere, recently. Have you tried PMing her? It is hard to run a game of only three.

For the moment, at least. I've noticed. She said she would finish it up as soon as possible.
It would be difficult running without our full lineup, especially given the low-level casters in the group, but if I do end up starting without anybody, I doubt it'll get too far along before the last remaining character work gets finished and everybody joins in. Hopefully not even to the first encounter. But that'll depend on you guys.

By the time you read this, Matt, everything should be in. I take it that was you who changed his weight to 666 lbs? Cute. That will be fixed, too, as he is not nearly so fat. I left a few notes at the end about any exceptions that I made.
